BE Webinar: What It Will Take To Build Communities In Space

For many space advocates, the ultimate goal of human space exploration and development is the eventual creation of large, thriving, self-sustaining in-space communities and the beginning of an off-world civilization. Of course, advocates perennially ask how we accomplish that future vision. This Beyond Earth Webinar takes a serious look at the challenges of constructing large-scale space habitats. Speakers examined the technical and cost barriers, as well as the policies that could help accelerate critical capabilities and asked the important question of “why” we should want to extend human civilization beyond Earth at all.

Need to make the power modular to start. Super micro uninterruptible power supplies for essential infrastructure. Alpha and Beta Voltaics paired with a variety of other energy storage and generation methods can create uninterruptible power supplies that can isolate from each other on a circuit board level up to large battery arrays paired with solar and eventually nuclear and even chemical fuel cells or turbines from Sabatier reaction methane. I'm super optimistic for gasification for waste stream recycling and chemical manufacturing for 3D printing too. Flash graphene has huge potential. Microgravity may have advanced applications for graphene manufacturing for quantum computers and advanced solar cells with excellent durability and thermal resiliency. Habitats should incorporate permaculture principles to paraterraform in orbit with simulated gravity or in a domed Crater. Ecosystem architecture has huge potential for Earth applications to mitigate local effects of climate change and reverse desertification. The natural symbiotic economy within ecosystems is very efficient and can supply another circular economy with hydrocarbons for polymers and fuel with biomass and atmosphere
