Rose: We never had Cracker jacks in St Olaf but we did have Genürgen Flürgen crispbreads, and if you were really lucky you’d get a dried cow’s teat as a prize in the bottom of the box. I guess I’ll have to settle for an Emmy if I open a Cracker jack box down here in Miami.

She was also the last one of them to win and now they really had all won. Betty was first, then Rue, then Estelle won supporting actress that evening, so when Bea won leading actress, it officially cemented that they were all powerhouse winners. 😊

@Theadambshapiro yes! And this also cemented them as one of the only casts in tv history where the whole cast won Emmys along with All In The Family and Will and Grace. Everybody Loves Raymond almost made it too if only Peter Boyle had won.

I wonder what must have been going through Bea's mind just before Peter Falk announced the winner....Betty had won 2 years before, Rue won the previous year, and Estelle won Supporting Actress earlier that evening! It truly would have sucked if Bea hadn't won....but she did, which finished off the Grand Slam for the four of those great ladies! :)

She really should have won for the first season. I think her scene in the premier season where she confronts Stan for dumping her after her daughter's wedding was the best acting scene that entire first season. I don't even know why Betty White was nominated all seven seasons. She was good, but I think Rue (Blanche) was probably the greatest actress of that whole show.

Matt D. Bea Arthur had good comedic timing but between the "angry" acting and the shouting-- NAH. Her acting is one-dimensional and tiresome. Betty White, a sharp witty funny smart person in real life plays a slow perennially innocent woman-- THAT is acting!

> Betty White, a sharp witty funny smart person in real life plays a slow perennially innocent woman-- THAT is acting! If that is the criteria then Bea deserved her Emmy as much as anyone because from interviews with practically everyone who knows Bea Arthur personally, not those who know her through Maude or Golden Girls, has said that Bea in real life is shy, reserved and quiet, the exact opposite of her public persona. Now THAT, should I say, is acting too !!

UncleBobIsAngry Susan Lucci is an actress that was on the now ended ABC soap opera All My Children. She was nominated for 19 years in a row for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Soap. She lost EVERY single year until they broke the streak in 1999 & she finally won. She got a 4 minute standing ovation from the crowd when she came up to accept her long awaited and VERY deserved Emmy. Her cast mates and many fans cried real tears for her because she was always an amazing actress that was so graceful, humble & classy that was too long overlooked for an award for her performances. It was an amazing show.

osimeon00 Your statement contradicts itself, because if she didn’t deserve it yet again, then she wouldn’t have won it that year. If they were working out of sympathy like you suggested, then it wouldn’t have lasted to 19 nominations in the first place...

@jtrain5615 3 жыл бұрын
@@FearFanatic86 Her character was popular but she wasn't a very good actress (a lot of other soap actors came from the NYC theater world.) She had been on the show for so many years and had the best name recognition so she was usually nominated. So many times it became a running joke. She was a really good sport about it and often joked about it herself, which really endeared her to the emmy voters.

Agreed. Absolutely gorgeous. I guess the beauty standards were stricter then - probably quite a bit, but as a ”traditionally feminine” short woman I still cannot understand that Dorothys/Beas looks were ”laughing stock” - she was gorgeous. I’d even say hot in her own way.

I don't know if anyone else shares this view, but I thought she looked STUNNING in the last four seasons because of her hair!
@PerryCJamesUK
@PerryCJamesUK 2 жыл бұрын
I get that it may appear that way today, but in the days of the great comedies, a joke was usually made regardless of how the person looked. It was part of the classic comedian's makeup to give and receive jibes and to be aware enough to release that it didn't matter what was said as your worth wasn't determined by other's jokes or opinions. Bea was literally stunning and she knew it. She could dish out as much as she could take. Still miss her and her unique performances.

@@PerryCJamesUK I'm not trying to express disagreement with your point, but I think I read that Bea Arthur was bothered by the jokes about Dorothy's supposed lack of attractiveness, so they toned the jokes down in the last few seasons.
@PerryCJamesUK
@PerryCJamesUK 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgeharrisonlover4300 If she asked them to tone it down, I'm glad they did. I can't see why though after all, Dorothy never really let up on Stan's appearance, Rose's intelligence or Blanche's fondness for the opposite sex. It would seem a little strange just to worry about thing and not the others. Bea was a pro and a laugh is a laugh.

Betty said it too, in 1986 it’s true it’s really an ensemble show they needed each other to make it work

@@jess4metoo Don't be so harsh. Bea was very quiet and understated. Betty was more outgoing and bubbly. It seems more likely that Bea's personality just clashed with Betty's. I'm sure Betty understood this, which is why she holds no ill will to Bea.

My favorite in the Golden Girls is BEATRIZ (DOROTHY) . She deserved the award. She had a lot of class.

I personally think that Bea should have won the Emmy in the first season. Her performance in the episode "Guess who's coming to the Wedding" was truly a tour-de-force. Bea definitely has and showed in full force her dramatic chops in this episode. The comedic moments that she displayed were stellar as well. That performance was amazing and truly should have been recognized. Bea looks radiant in this clip as she humbly acknowledges they were an ensemble. Well deserved.

I agree. Like Candice Bergen in Murphy Brown, Bea could have won multiple years in a row - and i would have started with her in Season 1, but it was nice that each of the women won sequentially. Bea Arthur was a force of nature.

I wonder if the Emmys woulda been any different if she had chosen to use that episode. But she used the pilot.

@@toddskivolocki6972 hmm donthe judges really only look at JUST the episode and actor submits..I don't get it dkesnt that seem too myopic to you or anyone else..indkdnt even know that episode submission was a thing until.recently..isn't it more fair and valid and comprehensive for the judges or the committee whatever you call them to evaluate the entire season of work to decide who wins? I thought that's how winners were determined for emmys not just based on one episode they submitted? Has it always been that way?

@@leif1075 the thing I find strange is that lead and supporting for the dramas and comedies is one episode while if you were in a mini/limited series and the lead you get judged on the whole thing. Supporting in a mini/limited...one episode. That info was relayed to me via a librarian who looked some stuff up for me that I wasn't finding.
