I was at this July 4th show at the very front of the crowd of 400,000 people.. I wormed my way all the way to the front just before the barrier of security guards in front of the stage.. It was incredible! Loved every minute. This was after that Congressman said a stupid comment of "the Beach Boys attracting the wrong element." Reagan, president at the time called him out on it. Then the Beach Boys flew in for July 4th and played.. All beach boys were on stage; all the brothers. It was historical and fantastic really. That was the Summer of 80. I was in my prime. Just 20 years old. Makes me want to cry.

Ah! The great Beach Boys comeback #1 hit that never was! It's as if you took "Surfer Girl" and every other song remotely like it, then compressed them all into one tight song! It's the most perfect, ultimate Beach Boys signature "statement" (by "statement", I DON'T mean the words!) I never thought I'd see a live version of this song! Live is where we separate the men from the boys. Plenty of mediocre singers could re-create this in the studio, but live onstage? TOTALLY DIFFERENT STORY!

Cally Ann Cally- he came in on time... just sang lyrics to second verse, first and said “ shooooot” and grimac ed.... I give him so much credit. My first reaction would have been “” FUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCKKKKK”. Such a gentle, humble wonderful man. Also, for a song entitled “Good Timin”, brother Brian is SERIOUSLY half a beat OFF time on his too loud/ flat responsorial... thank you for opening a dialogue which allows me to point this out. It is positively sacrilegious to say anything negative about Brian, I know....

If you read closely I was inferring that some of the Beach Boys best songs were the ones written without the collaboration of Mike. I was in the eighth grade when the Beatles first came to America and lived through the sixties. Back in the day I did more of my share of pot, hash and acid. I wasn't a Bill Clinton. I inhaled. And I wrote that comment 1 year ago. What the Hell, man?

What the Hell indeed? I have no idea what the conflict is! Are you telling MIKE LOVE to "Eff off"? 'Cause I got NO problem with that! And you are almost entirely right about the songs Love didn't co-write. But he had his moments. Mike's "Good Vibrations" were much more sensual and serene and than Tony Asher's! I find Asher's version obnoxious. I'll be saying THAT "Til I Die", heh heh. Mike's had his moments, but few and far between. Sometimes, Brian alone writes the best songs!
@BenCulture11 жыл бұрын
Well, yes and no. Brian's interjections aren't particularly off-key until the last one of the three, which IS quite bad. But the other two were just derived from the D blues scale, whereas the song stays faithfully diatonic in D Major. With Brian Wilson, it's likely that the idea occurred to him JUST AT THAT MOMENT. And until he did that, we were never even SHOWN that Brian was there. I also believe anyone who writes/co-writes a song has every right in the world to perform it however he wants.

Dr Landy saved Brian's life and I think that Brian will admit that to this day. But it went too far. I think he had Brian sign a form that made him his partner for life. Yeah, I had the cassette of Brian's first solo album. I think Dr Landy had a small singing part on Rio Grande. It came out at the time that the Beach Boys released Kokomo. I never liked that song. And Brian got cheated out of being on that song. That had Mike written all over it imo.

But seriously: Yes. "Til I Die'", Brian wrote all on his own. And it's amazing, the most worthwhile track on a decent, but generally un-Brian kind of album. If Brian's faux-autobiography is at all accurate, Mike *snorted* with contempt when Brian played him the song: "What a fucking downer! We make upbeat albums. That's what our fans like." Carl (no angel, he) agreed, as did Al (as if Al Jardine's opinion ever matters.) Dennis & Bruce seemed to appreciate Brian more than the rest of the band.

Mike is and always was a horse's arse of a man! So much ego, so little charisma!

Mike Love is kinda like Robin, the Boy Wonder: In his day, he was a big, popular star, who gave the group/comic book staying power. But as the audience grew, they felt Mike/Robin were inappropriate for what Brian/Batman was trying to do. He got more and more silly, repetitive, corny, and WAY too chatty during the concerts (or, while fighting supervillians). Hmm. If Brian & Mike were Batman & Robin, then who was Dr. Landy? I think I better stop before my comparison collapses completely.

Loved Carl. He was a great, underrated talent. He was a very, very attractive man physically although he was not buff. Men don't have to be buff to be attractive. A lot of people, both men and women, don't understand that. The reason Carl was so attractive is that there was character in that face of his. You knew what kind of person he truly was just by looking at him. By all accounts he was just the kindest soul. His two wives Annie Hinsche and Gina Martin were truly lucky women to have had him in their lives. May he rest in peace.

Well, the freaky thing about Dr. Landy is that he may very well have saved Brian's life, but what he went on to do (I think at one point he was sole beneficiary of Brian's will, if I'm not mistaken) was horrible. It's not unlike what they said about Hitler: At first, the Germans all loved him, because he "got the trains running on time". By all accounts, Brian was going to die if drastic action wasn't taken. I have an old cassette of Brian's 1st solo album with Landy's name all thru the credits.
@BenCulture11 жыл бұрын
You know what bugs me about Mike's "don't fuck with the formula" saying? Assuming he said that, and I believe it. It's like, Okay, dipshit, if you want to stick with the "formula", you will be a 60-70 year-old man writing about the joys & angst of teenage love, stuff like "We'll run away and get married anyhow", bizarre for old men to sing about. "Classic" (formula) Beach Boys was a beautiful part of music history, but it really can't go on in any sane way! I think Brian gets that. Mike? Never.
@gerrydooley9514 ай бұрын
it was actually said by a Capitol executive. The problem the BB's were having is there were really two groups: the touring band, who knew what songs were going over big in concert and Brian's studio Beach Boys. Brian was an artist and his music was changing and Mike was concerned that the music might not go over in concert. It was sort of the classic art vs. commerce debate. Mike wanted to keep the business going but he was concerned that albums like Pet Sounds and Smile might threaten that. Brian wanted to keep the band going as well but he had to express himself and get his music out. I don't think there were any good guys or bad guys here, Capitol had no idea what the shelf life of a rock group was going to be especially a group with a name like the Beach Boys, which has a real fad -ish ring to it. Capitol wanted to wring as much money out of the BB's as they could, that's what show business, especially music is all about. Capitol didn't care about the long term prospects of the Beatles or the Beach Boys, just keep the money rolling in. They didn't care about Brian's artistic expression, just keep the kids buying the records.

Yeah, Kokomo gives me the creeps too. When Mike was in India with McCartney and others it has been said that Mike was like the quartermaster. He brought along chewing gum, batteries and a whole lot of stuff to sell to people. And there were no freebies. He always wanted his cash. Of all the Beach Boys he was the least talented musically.

What I wonder about is, is Brian's piano even miked? I get the impression it's just a comfy little stage prop for him. He certainly SEEMS to be pawing at the chords like a baby. I've been to four of his solo shows. He sits (SITS) at front/center stage with a little keyboard that definitely ISN'T in the mix (except for one-man perfomances like "Love & Mercy"). Sitting also makes it easier for him to read the lyrics off a teleprompter. He always looks much cooler playing bass guitar!

I don't get it. What's wrong? Did he sing the wrong line? I've been listening to this song quite obsessively since the "Good Vibrations" box set came out, easily 100 times total, and I STILL have no idea what the correct order of lyrics are. Focusing on the Beach Boys's LYRICS is kind of missing the point, isn't it?

What the hell, man? pearlsfortheswines wasn't criticizing ANYTHING or ANYBODY. He/she just wanted to know what Mike Love was saying! If you need to get mad, be mad at Mike, always interrupting -- and the late Murry Wilson, who trained them to RUSH through all their songs with tight grins on their faces. Thank God most of them got into drugs (well, at least the pot) and learned to mellow out when appropriate. I might recommend you do the same.

I believe the story about Mike saying "don't fuck with the formula" because it of his character to say something like that. My son once made an observation about Mike that all he would write about was the beach, hot dogs, caramel corn, cotton candy and amusement parks. Yeah, Brian grew up musically and Mike never grew up. On stage, even on songs where he contributes little vocally he postures himself as if he's the star of the show. I wouldn't go to any of his bands concerts.
