Why do a rainbow? Is it kind of a trick shot since you start w/back hand and opponent would then expect a back hand?

It’s if definitely a tricky shot! And a very advanced shot as well, not easy to execute. As I mentioned on the video there’s also a very specific time where this should be used. The angle and spin you get from a rainbow it’s much harder to defend than a regular backhand

if i have a slow high ball towards my backhand, i feel strongly that i can generate strong pace with my one handed backend enough that this shot seems unnecessary

This is a tricky shot! So power is not the goal of this shot. The ball gets topspin and drops making it harder to defend and the opponent has less time to react since he is not expecting a rainbow. But overuse of the rainbow makes it less efficient so sometimes backhand is okay too.
