Beachcomber Retrospective - The Peace-Loving Autobot Geologist

I honestly thought g1 Beachcomber was more of a beatnik than he was a hippie. I always dig autobots that had unconventional roles like Beachcomber being a geologist, a trait which I feel is so underrated and overlooked in favor of portraying him as a hippie which I don't mind, but geology is so cool. I often headcanon that he uses his knowledge to find the evidence of energon in uninhabited planets. We need more geology rep and Beachcomber fits it so well.

Golden Lagoon is such a classic episode, the Transformers never really talked down to kids i think it's helped the franchise become as popular as it is.

Growing up, the golden lagoon was the episode I looked forward the most, hoping I'd catch a replay. I loved the laid back way Beachcomber handled everything, I really dug him. And it's Alan Oppenheimer, what's not to love. Great retrospective, I had forgotten he cameoed in Armada, so cool.

Okay, where did the Electrum come from? Was it Cybertroninan in origin? If so, how did it wind up on Earth? If not, how was it just sitting in that forest undisturbed by humans for Primus knows how long?? These are good questions we'll never get the answer to. "Deep down, he knows that until his side wins..." I love that part of Beachcomber's bio. Megatron wants "peace through tyranny," meaning destruction, obliteration, enslavement, and the end of free will. Beachy HAS to keep fighting to get REAL peace...for himself and for the universe.

Beachcomber's episode The Golden Lagoon is truly one of the best episodes! Weird fact: Beachcomber would be killed in the 2005 comic adaptation of the movie. His body was found outside the launcher room where the bodies of Smokescreen, Windcharger, and Wheeljack was in. The Beachcomber in Five Faces of Darkness and who appeared in the Headmasters are most likely Dune Runner, since this Beachcomber-like character doesn't display the peace-loving personality and smile that Beachcomber had always expressed.

After the scene in the Golden Lagoon episode where he rescues some Autobots, I always headcanoned that Beachcomber was pretty good at fighting but still disliked combat and the war. Maybe he was into MMA or similar competitions, since that form of fighting would’ve excluded actually harming your opponent in most cases. I thought it also would fit since he’s described as ‘agile’, implying he can hold his own at least decently against Decepticons.

I found out about Beachcomber from the current Energon universe comics, and quickly fell in love with his admiration for nature. His decision to keep all the autobots and deceptacons in stasis when he arrived on earth before them was really powerful, and a great way to show how difficult of a choice it can be to choose peace over the wellbeing of one's friends.

Beachcomber was very much an amazing character. And I always found the Autobots that had more scientific, peaceful jobs - such as Beachcomber and Skids - more interesting than their more gung-ho counterparts. So I could relate to the hippie-like Beachcomber. And, the poignant "We won ..." at the end of the Golden Lagoon episode really hits in the feels as Beachcomber ponders the real cost of the battle. =( Would love to see more Beachcomber in comics and cartoons! ♥

I had a toy Golden Lagoon version of G1 a pacifist Beachcomber, in a metallic gold. Thanks for the retrospective, Rodimus Primal. Rip Alan Oppenheimer, he's a great voice actor. In japanese anime, a veteran seiyuu is Saka Osamu-san my fave. Let's give more love for Beachcomber. He's loving animals given compassionate personality.

I'd love to see him in a future show with a non combat episode. His laid back acceptance of the world around him, his curiosity with a scientific field... there's a lot to work with, and plenty of room to connect with humans as he learns more about the ground of his new home, possibly having the setup being to prospect for energon or high grade metals to repair his comrades, with the slow procedure of the process being the foundation for talking that fleshes out characters.

Yeah, Beachcomber was the better Autobots that wanted peace because his whole character wasn't all "Why must we fight. What is the point of the war. I don't want to fight because war is bad." The Golden Lagoon episode shows him off a lot better for being a peace loving Autobot compare to all the pacifist Autobot. Yeah, he wants peace, but war will not leave a place peaceful until it is over. You then you realized after the war/battle is over that there is a cost for the victory. For example, in the Ultimate Weapon, First Aid I kind of get but his whole pacifist belief is kind of moot seeing that he combines to make a bigger Autobot that shoots his enemies. He didn't have to use a gun to stop Swindle, he could have grabbed or tackled him to the ground until his fellow Autobot comes to help. He is facing a Decepticon, so 99% of the time they will not listen to anyone that isn't a Decepticon unless it is to their benefit. If anything, that episode made Rodimus a lot better than his usual survivor's guilt characteristic he falls into half the time he is shown. He didn't fight Galvatron but found a way to beat him without fighting him head on. Unless a character is in political role, I don't really like the non-combated characters that wants peace and gets their ass handed to them by a person on the opposing side. More reasons to love the 80s version of Beachcomber.
