It's filled with all the electronics. But the new bike on Kickstarter will have storage there, we moved things around.

Hey Ben! Noticed you mentioned the chain is a bicycle chain, do the chains need to be swapped out every 3-4000 km similar to a bicycle?

Yes, but only if you bike that distance. Most people will be using mostly motor power which won't impact the chain. It should also be lubricated to protect from rust.
