Thank you! I've been trying out new things including a new look/logo/animation, and I'm testing some new techniques. Just enjoying my current creative explosion! I'm looking forward to more of your videos, as I did enjoy your showcase of your recent trip across the pond!

I love the Cloud Rider sculptures (on right at 00:58 and 01:07) by Dan Webb. Tiny but one of my favorite Seattle public artworks (maybe because they're so easy to miss that spotting them feels like you've found a hidden gem).

I love those sculptures, too, and I made sure to get them in the intro shot! I do have some unfortunate news; over a year ago, the bike rider portion on the NW side of the crossing went missing. I reported it to the City, but nothing was ever done to replace it. Hopefully the artist can make a replacement (right now just the cloud is there).

@@bobco85 Oh no! That's really sad news. They're a little isolated and vulnerable, but I think because they're mounted up high and tiny, most people just don't notice them which has probably kept them safe for the last 10+ years. Fingers crossed the artist can / will replace them, and the city has a fund to help enable this.

Map inset synched with bike cam is a big improvement. Not sure if that's new, but I hadn't noticed before.

Completely agree, it's a great new addition to this route videos. It's probably super hard to sync up the bike position in the map inset with the video, but I did find delay between the two a little distracting since I know these routes well and my brain was yelling, "that's not where he is!" at the map inset :) Hopefully this is something that Bob will figure out how to refine, but it's already a great feature.

The mini-GPS in the corner is a new element that I decided to try out for this video. I like the idea, but I'm going to have to adjust various pieces like the size, the framerate, the angle/rotation of it, and how I show other routes/detours on a bigger map. The next iteration should be better, and I'm excited to try it out!

I like your first option and incorporate it into a ride from Mt Baker neighborhood to Victrola coffee on Beacon Hill and on to the CD. And I agree with you about the "faster. traffic for cars headed to I-5" - not very comfortable even for a confident cyclist.

I sometimes use 15th Ave when heading southbound towards Georgetown, South Beacon Hill, or Rainier Beach, but if I'm going northbound I'll cut to 16th Ave and ride on the neighborhood greenway. It's always good to know your options!

@@bobco85Several years ago, I used to ride from Pioneer Square to Rainier Beach on Beacon Hill; up King St to 12th, over the Dr Jose P Rizal bridge, 15th south to Beacon Ave to Cloverdale, Cloverdale to Rainier. But it was too stressful and dangerous, particularly Beacon Ave S at night or winter mornings in the dark. These days I skip Beacon Hill entirely and ride part of the Lake Washington Loop -- Seward Park Ave S. to Lake Washington Blvd, follow it up the hill in Colman Park, right on Irving, join the I-90 trail, follow that through the tunnel, through Sam Smith Park, across MLK and 23rd, ride the sidewalk south 1/2 block, re-join the trail, follow that through Daejon and Sturgus Parks to 12th, join the new bike lanes over the bridge to King. This route has its own significant drawbacks; Seward Park Ave S between Rainier and Wilson has no bike facilities but drivers are usually less aggressive than on Beacon Ave S. Lake Washington Blvd also feels increasingly unsafe, with very high speed passing, often on curves (and when drivers don't pass, they often tailgate as a recent video of yours demonstrated). I have little faith that the Lake Washington Blvd improvement project will do more than slap a bandaid on it -- if we're lucky, a speed cushion or two (the community engagement site SDOT / Parks set up is a horror show of NIMBYism and name calling). Still, the lake route is beautiful. I hope we will get a safer and more direct route to downtown from SE Seattle some day, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks for showing multiple options for this route. Re: riding on Beacon Ave at 06:18 all the way to Columbian Way, this is one of the worst parts on the route (either north- or southbound). There is no bike lane (yet), and cars expect you to ride in the shoulder, which usually has parked cars that necessitate merges. It's probably best to just take the lane, but you likely will get honked at and tailgated. The pedestrian path in the center of Beacon Ave S (that terminates a block or so south of Columbian) isn't a good option as it's narrow and curving and frequently has elderly walkers. The section of 15th with sharrows feels almost as hairy although, because are two lanes, cars are a little less likely to tailgate and will just pass you at 50mph in the left lane. Welcome to South Seattle bike infrastructure on direct routes, circa early 2024.

Yeah, riding on that section of 15th Ave isn't great. My typical route is to use Beacon Ave, then Columbian Way, then 16th Ave onto the greenway, then peel off of the greenway at Hanford to go back to 16th, then McClellan to 14th which avoids most of the traffic.

Great video! I'm pretty sure the bike boxes at 18th/Yesler do NOT detect bikes. I always use the ped button (and it still takes forever for the light to change). I sure wish they had put the same detector and blue confirmation light there that they installed at 18th/Jackson.
@bobco85

I "swear" the bike box there detects bikes, but because it takes so long for the light to change, I find myself questioning it every time! Having a blue confirmation light would really help folks understand their bike was detected. Or even better, they could install a countdown timer! I've seen one used in Portland, OR, like this: bikeportland.org/2020/08/07/nifty-new-bike-signal-added-to-broadway-williams-intersection-319054

I love this video! What is the information source you used to create the color-coded trail map in google earth?
@bobco85
@bobco85 8 ай бұрын
Thank you! The trail map is custom-made in Google Earth Pro that I uploaded into Google Earth Studio. I'm sure there are easier ways to gather the information, but I do not have any skills in using GIS (future things to learn!)

Any ideas for getting from 14th & Union to Broadway & Union? I usually do what you did and go to Cal Anderson and then turn back toward Union on the Broadway bike lanes, but I wasn't sure if there was a better option. It's a really awkward spot for the protected lane to end heading west.
@bobco85
@bobco85 9 ай бұрын
For now, I would recommend turning onto 14th Ave, then using Pike St and either riding to Broadway or turning onto 11th or 10th to get to Union St. All of the intersections past 12th Ave are all-way stops, so it's easier to make turns. In the future when the RapidRide G project on Madison St is completed, you will be able to continue on the Union St protected bike lane through the intersection with Madison St with dedicated bike signals. You probably have already seen the concrete bike lanes & bus lane on the west side of Madison/Union/12th. I don't know when this portion of the project will be constructed, but it's something to look forward to.
