We rescued a wonderful standard Beagle from a puppy mill. He was 10 when we got him 2 years ago. He's come so far from being caged 24/7. He gets lots of long walks, rides in the car, naps on the bed or leather couch, healthy diet and copious amounts of love and "you're a good boy!" He's a fantastic dog that will never be alone or caged again.

beagles are social creatures and as a result when i moved to my house 10 years ago i was often awaken in the mornings to my neighbor down the roads pocket beagle bouncing off my door. Little Bit was her name i had never met such a loving intelligent dog she knew when i needed a smile and she never failed to deliver. sadly she was old by the time we met and i only got to spend 5 years as a part of her extraordinary life. the owner told me how it just wasn't my house she frequented but she did "her rounds" to every house in our neighborhood, that dog was loved and cared for by so many people probably fed to because my road is a mile long and she was still fat as a butter ball even though she roamed it daily.... i lost her company a few years ago and ive never stopped missing her companionship. in fact i missed her enough i got a beagle pup a few months back from my brother hes a hunter so i took the runt since shes destine to be a couch potato ..... her Name is Kitty i often catch myself calling her lil bit their personalities are so similar yet different at the same time ... never before had i considered a beagle as a pet but my experience with a neighbors dog changed that... my paragraph alone should be a testament to owning a beagle(s )

We owned a standard sized Beagle adopted from the pound. He'd been born about the same time Hurricane Katrina had devastated the deep South and had lost his home and his family. I still miss my little Arfer, and think about him frequently. I currently have another dog from the pound, Sweetie Pie, who is part Beagle and part Dachshund. She misses little Arfy, too. I, too had a Beagle that was about to be put down at the pound. The moment he realized I was taking home for the last time, his joy, (and mischievousness), began. He was 15 and a half when I had to let him go, and it absolutely crushed me. Just the previous year, we lost two dogs, and the year before that, we lost another one. So losing 4 dogs in four years was especially hard. I have a picture of my Beagle that had appeared on the front page of a newspaper, and when I look at it, my heart breaks all over again.

Our elderly neighbors thought it was a good idea to get a beagle pup from actively hunted lines to keep as a house dog. She did very naughty things. They gave her to my daughter when she was just 11 months old. So she came to live w us. I never ever had an ounce of trouble out of the little dog and she was as smart as a whip and was super athletic. We still visited her previous owners and grandma and grandpa were thrilled she seemed so happy. Then again I saw she had lots of exercise and let her use her nose....did some recall training and spent time playing with her. when my daughter moved out she stayed with me because I needed to be sure she was being well cared for and kids need to focus on dealing with adult life for the first time on their own. She was my best friend and a wonderful companion dog. Eventually, I would like to have a beagle.....I am def getting one from a shelter. Probably an older one. It will have to be hunting type.

@bettymorrow6602 Жыл бұрын
Beagles are very much like other dogs, they need love and attention to be the kind of dog you want. They may be a little more difficult to train and that’s because they follow their nose everywhere and get distracted, but with proper training there is not a better dog you could ever have. They absolutely love children and other dogs, getting along with everyone.

Yes! Sounds like a beautiful dog. I, too, adopted a Beagle mix from my local shelter less than 3 months ago. He's my happy stubborn 8 year old man. His mother was a purebred standard Beagle, and his father was a young Beagle/Coonhound mix -- as the old owners put it, it was an oops litter. He has yet to meet a human and not want immediate belly rubs; an incredible hunter, but a horrible protection dog lol. His tan-and-white body is all Beagle, albeit about twice the size (the Coonhound in him gives him his height/heft, around 55lbs), and he has those telltale floppy ears, white-tip tail, and bulkier deep-chested body. His face is more Coonhound though. We were given a puppy picture of him and he looked like any typical Beagle pup, but as he got bigger, so did his snout lol. Sorry to ramble, but Beagles are just great dogs. I was never a hound person, but this howly man made me a Beagle lover for life. I swear there is nothing better than watching a true scent hound track a scent, huffing/grunting/snorting along, random yet orderly zigzag movements, only to find the animal (in my boy's case, deer are his favorites) and try to chase after whatever he found, baying his little head off. Moral of the story: beagles may not be in shelters that often, but when you find one, take them home. Their stubborn streak and unyielding hunger are nothing compared to the endless love and joy they'll bring. Much love to you and Bonny!

I had an oversized "Standard" he was almost 40 pounds and hard as a rock. He was from a long line of field champions, and was pretty wild. People would come over and see him the first time, curled up on the couch, and say, "He's so nice and quiet!", yeah, until he saw the neighbor's dog he didn't like, a squirrel or rabbit, then he would explode with his insanely loud yelling, while eating the window glass. Needless to say, he was not the most popular dog in the neighborhood. The only purebred Beagle I've seen close to him in size was his own father, who was slightly smaller than he was. He came out very well for the runt of the litter who barely survived.

He was very noisy and was LOUD, and was more than happy to fight the biggest dog if provoked, and to be honest, he was provoked by almost any humping or attempt to show dominance. His worst loss in a fight was to a Newfoundland that attacked him at the vet when he had been bitten by a Black Widow spider. He got bit about once a year or so. As a houndsman, I've raised AKC beagles for years and have never bred a purebred beagle with another breed. I've had several folks requesting a purebred beagle to crossbreed with a pug. I would not and did not give her any of my beagle bloodline and I called all local beaglers to not sell to her and that stopped that in our community of beagle handlers. You've got enough mixed dogs at the pound. If that's what you want, go to the pound. They're great dogs but I don't want a beagle mix.

Great message... "If that's what you want, go to the pound" There are so many dogs needing a loving home already. Also this trend of cutesie mix'n'match feeds a disturbingly greedy branch of breeding - an 'industry' with too many unscrupulous people: 'puppy farmers'. Too often, they are not true breeders -- or farmers -- who take animal husbandry very seriously and conscientiously.

Even though they have this weird thing where they eat their own poop (yeah, it drives me nuts!), I can't even tell you how much happiness they bring into my life. It's just too much joy to put into words!

Our beagle came to us self-potty trained. It was almost as if he instinctively knew not to pee or poo in his place of comfort. Very intuitive.

I loved my Beagle (Maggie), but I didn't realize how energetic she would be. She was fun on walks but she needed much more room than I had in my house. Sadly, I had to give Maggie away to another family where she had lots of room to play. I prey that she will be much happier in her new home. I am sooooo sad......

They do get older & calming as they age. My beagle mix did & I’m hoping my beagle puppy will as he gets older sooner than later, lol. I’m in it for the long haul. There are options now, like hiring someone to walk him or doggy day care.

Steve, hopefully you'll be able to find another cute little dog that will steal your heart. My problem is that I get caught up in all my beagles. So I understand how tough it is to fill that void. I too had a beautiful beagle named Maggie and evryone who met her simply loved her and wanted her. I also had her sister (Sam). When Sam passed away Maggie passed about 30 days later. They passed right beore we built our new home in a different town bt we took both Maggie and Sam to our new land to bury them on our new land. The best to you, Steve.

I had a small American tri colour beagle. My Ex wife and kids surprised me one day when I got home with Max. At first I was a bit angry because we had just lost 3 Irish Setters in a short space of time. The oldest Elle lived to 17 and I had to make the difficult decision to put her down as her quality of life was not there. My sister was a vet nurse and did the deed on our couch. Extremely upsetting. So as my family disintegrated due to other factors Max became my best friend. Beagles have the most incredible personalities. But they can be very naughty. For instance we also had a German Shepperd. A 60kg yet very family friendly dog we got from a Police breeder. 2 Totally different dogs. We lived on acreage and I used to have CCTV on the driveway gates and regular as clock work Max would start on his morning routine of visiting the neighbours for left over cat food finishing off with a trip to the park and a swim in the creek. I used to enjoy watching the CCTV recording of Maxy and Zues heading down the drive at 5:30am whare as Zeus would stop at the gates and be obviously worried they were going to get in trouble. Max would stop and look back with a "You coming or not you big sook" zues would follow but looking very hesitant. I guess my point is with German Shepard's you just click your fingers and they are at your side. "What do you want me to kill Boss ?" Beagles however will roll their eyes sideways at you, in a way saying "Yea I hear you, but right now I'm going this way. I will catch up soon, if that's OK with you" . Very smart dogs and so human. Max always slept with me on his back like Snoopy. Then one day he didn't seem right and couldn't eat. Not right for a beagle. So as we were living on an island held him on the ferry and got him to the nearest Vet. And yes it was time. I'm not in the position to have another dog atm but when I am it will be an American Tri colour. What a great Dog.

Years ago, I used to raise beagles and never heard the term pocket beagle. They were either short legged (below 13 inches) and long-legged (13 inches and over). The 3rd type the video talked about was called a mutt.

In the UK they are known as "Saddle Beagles" as hunters carried them in a leather pouch, and released them at full speed . This ensured they hit the ground running, apparently they loved this part of the hunt.

You missed out the Beagle-Harrier which is a bit wilder than the standard and is used for hunting, not as heavy and a bit leaner and taller.

Actually there are 4 types of Beagles. I have the fourth type, normally they have a nickname of "Mr Fat bastard", but that is cruel, they should really be called Mr slightly overweight Illegitimate progeny". They combine the best features of all other types and can be recognized by a serious health issue, namely a fanatical adverse reaction to basic medical treatment, but an enormous box of love, which they spend hours transferring to you via Lingua magna!

Hello, I am a dog behaviourist and have owned 26 fabulous dogs in my 90 years and taught dog obedience for ten years. My beagle is a throwout from a puppy farm and I bought her as a rescue dog when she was 7 years old. I have had her for 18 months . Literally a nose on legs, as she should be. When I got her she didn't even know she was a dog, totally lacking in personality. I have been able to teach her some basic commands but she is slowwwww to learn. She is the saddest dog I have ever known; the only time she gets excited is at meal times. Not interested in balls or playing with toys, I cannot interest her in anything, she is just not interested. The first thing I ever taught my dogs was to pee outside and I never had a problem. Untill now!!!!! All my life my dogs have slept in my bedroom, some on the bed some not - no problems. She does sleep on the bed together with my ShihTzu. For all my coaxing and rewarding for good behaviour she still pees on the carpet in my room after 18 months. I am about to spend over $2,600.000 to take up the carpet and put down floorboards. I have sympathy for her past life but I would never, never get a beagle again. Hate me if you like. They are not the dogs they are cracked up to be in my opinion. Sorry.

So you have one bad experience with a rescued beagle from a puppy farm that was SEVEN years old and think that’s how every beagle is? And you’re a 90 year old dog behaviorist? Okay 🤣
