So sad to hear the commentator mention how, "Monica used to play without fear, but she knows fear now..." That evil SOB robbed her of her joy. Love Monica forever!

Undoubtedly. But I think some of it comes with age too. Heard so many great players over the years talk about how you're much more fearless when you're young because you don't have the same pressure, or understanding of the pressure, that you have when you're older.

When I saw Mary-Joe Fernandez playing for the first time it was at the 1986 French Open and I said to myself: “ omg, this little girl- she was 14- is gonna be the greatest soon!”. Finally, Fernandez became just a very good player reaching 2 Australian finals and being so close to win the 1993 French against Graf. Anyway I don’t forget her and I’m sure she’s now one of the greatest commentator I’ve ever listen!

She and Mary Jo are great friends. In fact, Mary Jo was one the people who helped Monica come back to the tour. Monica was in her wedding.

I think Monica was the maid of honor and Davenport was a bridesmaid.

Mary Jo was a great friend to many players. Her and Steffi Graf were also great friends and really close too and Steffi Graf didn’t have many on tour.

Just love Monica Seles-ladies tennis is so much less interesting since she left-she had a wonderful mom and dad. Mary Joe was another great lady-both very gracious in winning or in defeat. Navatralova named her as one of her worst nightmares to play as she was extremely powerful off both sides. Even another great player like Graf noted that "she is so powerful on every surface"

You stayed up late to watch The French Open in the USA? Doesn't sound right because France is only 6 hours ahead of us.

Tom Ogden Hey Tom, yep i liked Mary Joe a lot too, she was one of my favorite players at the time. It's a shame she never won a grand slam, and she got so close in the French final that one year against Steffi (can't remember the year)

It was to buy time because she was with below average fitness. It was a fact and declared by her old coach/training center figure Nick Bolittieri, that Monica from the start was all tennis on the court only, and that was it. He said Monica never did anything besides tennis on the court - no fitness, no workout or running, nothing. That is why it caught up to Monica later on and even without the tragic stabbing, her ways of not doing any activity besides just tennis, would have caught up to her and the tour was starting to adapt to her game anyways.
