The land around my then new house was clay loam and nothing would grow. After more than 30 years of leaving the leaf duff to accumulate, the soil is now rich and several feet thick. It took awhile but Nature returns if you let her! Bealtaine is lovely!

I used to have the tiniest quarter of a circle shaped garden, when I lived in town many years ago. I was terrified for my cat but I set about making a little paradise for her and she loved it. Thankfully she rarely left the garden. These days I live next to a small wood. I no longer have pets but I have birds, hedgehogs, a woodmouse (Speedy Gonzalez) and a fox visit. Nature is glorious, just like your garden! It's your little bit of heaven. Patsy must be a very content little dog. ❤

Every May, I hear this little bird in my garden & I had no idea what it was, so I was waiting for it to return so I could record it on the Merlin app & find out what it was, I always thought perhaps it's not a bird but a large insect because of the unusual shrill it makes, turns out it is a bird & a rarely seen one because of its secretive nature, and its called a grasshopper Warbler! How wonderful is that!❤ The woodland looks absolutely fabulous in May with everything coming into bloom, I wonder if I'd be able to create a pond, too!

Merlin is a great resource for identifying birds and the way to do things for each individual species in a variety of ways. I have a basket that contains dog hair, my hair and bits of fabric and pieces of thread that the birds are constantly gathering for their nests. It really is a great resource for all of the birds. The hummingbirds are especially busy with flying away with tufts of hair in their beaks.❤

Hi Collette everything looks magical, I have taken a leaf out of your book and I have started putting all my grass cuttings ( I have a biggish garden ) and leaves, spread around on the garden beds instead of putting them in the green refuse bin, and it is working, they are rotting down and becoming great soil, I used to do this year's ago but just became lazy and started putting everything in the council refuse bin, it smothers the weeds too, I have left the bottom of my garden rather wild, ie bushes and trees, and we now have hedgehogs and foxes, and so many different birds, I would love a pond, but I'm not sure there is room, it is only a suburban garden, but I love gardening and plants, I also have bluetits nesting in the trees, it's lovely, and I have started working more with nature, take care xxx

Well this doesn't connect too much with this video but I just found this quote while reading an article about the first botanical garden started in the US in 1801. The quote is by Thomas Cole, one of the most famous landscape painters in the US and an early environmentalist. His words remind me so much of things that you have said. "We are still in Eden. The wall that shuts us out is our own ignorance and folly"

Beautiful video as always, Colette. I found the Merlin app too, and my bird-watching son is absolutely thrilled with it. If I can't find my phone, I know where it is! Amazing what you have done in 20 years. What do you think would have happened to the land if it had been just left? Would bushes and trees have gradually self-seeded, or is that not possible in the mess it was when you bought it?
