Alaska Cabin Adventures

Alaska Cabin Adventures

Күн бұрын

A day in the life building and insulating the foundation and subfloor for my new bunkhouse cabin in the woods of Alaska. With the help of my friend Forest, we are able to get the cabin ready for the next step...walls. We brought in gravel, cut down a couple more trees and hauled in the first load of lumber while enjoying the serenity and beauty of the Alaskan Wilderness. Check out Ep.1 if you haven't already.

I agree 100%. Use an impact to drive all your screws. I'm an electrician and we use our impact for drilling holes as well, in tight spots, you need the right paddle bits though. It's a pretty versatile tool.

Are you not concerned about frost heave when the ground freezes. If the bottom of your footing - concrete pier - isn't below the frost line the footing (and building) will move up when the ground freezes. I would imagine the frost line in Alaska is several feet below the ground.

Dumb question here... Does the insulation in the floor get damaged when it rains? Or are you able to get the roof on really fast?
@alaskacabinadventures
@alaskacabinadventures Жыл бұрын
Insulation is waterproof but I was worried about, so I used treated lumber for floor joists just in case, check out the next episode, it gets real rainy.

I'm not expert, that's why I'm asking. I see that the floor is wider than the supporting beams. And the walls are not directly above the beams. Doesn't that weaken the whole structure since all the load from the roof, snow, walls is not directly supported by the beams?
@alaskacabinadventures
@alaskacabinadventures 11 ай бұрын
Good question…that is called “cantilever” and a small distance is allowed to over hang the beams, the load will still be transferred down into them. The distance of cantilever allowed is equal to the width of your joist. So in my case I am using 2x6 joists which means I can have 5.5 inches overhanging my beams 👍
@DiabloOutdoors
@DiabloOutdoors 11 ай бұрын
@@alaskacabinadventures Well.. I just learned something useful! ... "equal to the width of your joist". Thanks a lot! P.S. I see that Yukon guys are drinking ... "LIGHT beer". Right there we see the difference between someone from Yukon and... Alaska! (sorry, just couldn't resist that one LOL)

Any risk of mice/rodents getting in under the cabin floor and using the foam board for a nest? Down in NY we would staple in some wire mesh to help keep them at bay. Looking great!

Hey Matt, you and your pal are doing a great job. Looks really good. Like that floor insulation and barrier. really will help. I don't want to get cold when I stay in it. Hey when cutting those trees, notch the shit out of them. Yeah, you need to cut them high to help get the stumps out latter but they can jump the stump and run you down. Also cut an angle parallel with the ground so you can keep them from digging in when you pull them with the 4 wheeler. May keep a chain or strap from breaking and knocking your brains out. On the bench saw, so one can cut and other can install, have a dedicated out of the way mostly level area for the saw, a few feet back, put in a couple vertical posts, 3 to 4 feet wide. maybe two sets for longer boards, then put cross members on them the same height of your saw deck. You can stack some cut boards on the one off side to make handling faster too. Makes a one man job and you don't have to use the hold down screw on the saw deck so much. Speeds it up. Chop chop and go. Be safe guys
@alaskacabinadventures
@alaskacabinadventures Жыл бұрын
Great comment! I did exactly that with the saw deck so I could cut 16ft boards by myself. I'll keep that tip in mind about cutting the tree at the angle of the ground, great idea. Thanks again for watching.

what did you do to protect the floor joists from rot/damage by rodents? you left a gap between the top of the joists where you put the insulation but the part below that is unprotected
@alaskacabinadventures

The joists are pressure treated/ ground contact rated lumber, they won’t rot. Likewise rodents dont mess with the stuff. My main cabin has the same joists and in 8 years they still look brand new. Thanks!

Good morning from Germany sir… Just started the video… and I was wandering why you burnt the branches..? I’m asking because I just found out recently myself that one could a lot of nice things with old, dead branches… So I wanted to pass it on… Build a wall anywhere… ( I know the technology is around for ages 😂) A few of the thicker ones go into the ground, sticking UP, space them a little, like half a meter, then drop the others from the top in between… All kinds of small animals can hide in there, it keeps water when the morning mist is running through the hillside… very helpful in summer… Insects of various types can live there… AND you can get rid of your small dead wood, without lighting a fire every time you need to get dispose of something… Just a thought… 👍

Excellent design! One of the major advantages of overhanging the beams past the piers is that its harder for water to find its way under them and freeze. Also its much easier to skirt the crawl space when the piers are not in the way.

i know next to nothing about build stuff so don't take this as criticism, but why don't you need piers for the foundation?
@alaskacabinadventures
@alaskacabinadventures Жыл бұрын
Great question...piers would be great, but for a small cabin pier blocks, like the ones I used, will be fine. They are adjustable, so any settling or frost heaving can be easily adjusted with the brackets over the years. Pouring piers like my main cabin requires very deep holes, a lot of concrete and getting it JUST right the first time. The pier blocks are very forgiving and easy. If the cabin was bigger I'd pour piers again though. Thanks!
