We had a tarantula as a pet while I was stationed at the San Mateao(?sp), Area 62 Dispensary, of MCB Camp Pendleton in 1972-73. We caught her in the barracks one morning, had to wear a pair of hog hide gloves, at first, she liked to bite, even though we rescued her from being squashed. I might have placed her fangs at about the size of a 16-18 gauge needle, like the ones we used to give the procaine penicillin shots with, boy were they long and sharp. Even with the gloves on, her bites could be felt, but they did not penetrate the gloves. She settled down and we were able to handle her after about a month. We built her a home in a 15 gallon aquarium, using an empty toilet paper roll as an opening under the rocks for her burrow. Her favorite prey were new born mice and crickets, she went through 4 pinkie mice and a dozen and a half large crickets or more a week. It was funny how some of those big tough Marines were afraid of her and the sidewinder rattlesnake we kept.
@mred80023 жыл бұрын
@@ShellyAnn1a Ours was a pink toed tarantula, supposed to be one of the calmer varieties. And the fangs were tapered, so that while like a 16 ga. At he business end, the bases were slightly larger than 14 ga. (I used those sizes frequently in my practice). We called her ‘Harrietta’ because, you know, hair. Actually the only issue with handling her was the hairs that would embed in the skin and form a rash. No interest in black crickets, but death on cave crickets, and would stuff three or four caddis flies in her mouth at once, greedy girl. We liked her as she was very, very quiet! And better choice than the monitor lizard my son first wanted.

I AM amazed...at how good this information is! I haven't watched TV for 18 years, just YT now. Also, thanks for putting in the reasons why these animals are disappearing forever. I can't understand hunters. How can you call it a "sport' when a person with a gun is using a scope and safely murdering a defenseless animal? Some day they'll all be gone, and we'll tell our grandchildren about beautiful animals who flew around and sang in the trees, and they'll find it hard to believe. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote ""We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."

I was in the woods this past June I sat and put my feet in the water by this little foot and just as I was getting up to go I caught it turning around and going back under the bridge it looked wet, grey and furry had no tail I didn't see any feet and it didn't scurry away like a rodent it just kind of glided quickly away. I stuck around for almost an hour trying to get a glimpse of it put in my camera under the bridge taking videos but no luck. I've been searching the internet to see what it could have possibly been.
