For those that need translations: 1st question: I'm a reporter from China Sports News. Firstly, I want to congratulate all the medalists. And my question for you three is: If you were to grade your performance in the entire Tokyo 2020, what score would give yourself? Also, can we expect to see you in Paris 2024? Thank you. *Cao Yuan*: I think I would give myself an 8/10. My only regret is I didn't get (he used the word 'threw away') the gold medal in the 10m synchro, I think it was because of my own mistakes that I didn't get the gold. So, it will be up to me next time to get it back. About the future (Paris 2024), there are still a lot of competitions in Mainland China that I have to focus on so I haven't really thought that far ahead yet, we have to do well in the nationals first (before thinking about Paris). *Yang Jian*: Is it my turn? So is the question about my thoughts about today's competition? Because I've stayed at the Athlete Village for almost 3 weeks before my competition, I felt quite anxious coming into this. I still feel the butterflies in my stomach after the prelims, semi-final, and final. But after calming myself down after the final, I could finally really enjoy the competition itself. Even though I got Silver in the end, unable to fulfil my own goals, I am still very proud that China could get a Gold in this competition. 2nd question (most difficult dive) *Yang Jian*: I've done my last dive for a long time now. I have been practising it for 8 years since I learned it back in 2013. You could say my last dive is my signature, I put it at the end of my routine to make it the piece de resistance of Asian diving. I am really satisfied with how I did on that dive. To be able to do that dive to that level, I have no regrets.
@closetskeleton5815
@closetskeleton5815 3 жыл бұрын
*Edit: Yang Jian's answer to the second question should be "...make it the pièce de résistance of *my dive*." instead of Asian. Correction courtesy of @Fiona Yu I am sorry if I made any mistake. If there's any, do let me know.

As for Yuan's reply, I tried to translate it as best I could to capture the tonal subtleties of his answer, at least that's how I interpret it. To be fair, I'm not from the Mainland, but I am a native speaker from Malaysia so maybe the cultural difference might have influenced my interpretation. But with how he's on the phone and stuff, I think it is pretty clear that he's quite rude

From a Chinese speaker: the silver medalists’ answers were actually quite graceful - he talked about his last dive and how even though it wasn’t perfect, he was content that he could execute the dive relatively well at the olympics. (We all saw how he was a bit fed up in the moment during the competition, but that’s understandable). Idk what’s going on with the gold medalist and why he was on his phone the whole time, but I’d give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe his family or friends were showering him with messages that he had a hard time ignoring. Tom truly stepped in and displayed some wonderful sportsmanship here.

Really impressed by Tom's manners and him expressing his gratitude to Japan and to the volunteers. The two Chinese divers were shy and didn't say that much because of their language barrier. But China might need to teach its athletes how to answer questions to the journalists all over the world and how to express gratitude to the others, even by using Chinese since more and more Chinese athletes become top in the world games. This shouldn't be that hard task for all these talented athletes so long as they were taught and trained a bit beforehand.

Cao and Yang gave me the impression that they only cared about getting medals ONLY for their country. Yang said he enjoyed the progress but what he shared are only technical issue, rather like machine performance. I can find the spirit of Olympic in Daley. He deserved our great respect and he’s a great person.

What are you talking about? Chinese people aren’t “fluffy jolly” like westerners, but they talk about the same thing, what aspects of their performances they feel satisfied about and where they felt dissatisfied. Obviously they do talk about their country particularly for a sport that their country has dominated for a while. Chinese people are far less selfish from this sense because they think about their countrymen when answering these questions like: if I didn’t do well my countrymen who did better I’m happy for them. As oppose to westerners who only just talk about themselves and what makes them happy.

The final match were really tense and I enjoyed it so much! These three divers deserve the medals; they had the most consistent dives among all of them. Tom seemed really enjoyed his match while both Chinese divers had neck to neck results to decide who won the gold. I understand why Yangjian was pissed off. Caoyuan already had Olympic gold medals before and he scored higher than Cao but Cao had good dives consistently since the start. Hopefully I still can see three of them in Paris 2024. Congrats!

I am happy that people are appreciating Tom for his spirit and grace cuz I think that's what Olympics are all about. It has been so heart warming to see so many acts of grace and humanity in this Olympics be it high jumpers sharing gold medal to sprinters sharing bracelet after their final race. I don't understand how people can hate on athletes or say who won and who lost when literally it broke my heart everytime I saw an athlete cry for not making it to the podium. But I am glad that there are moments like these keeping the spirit alive. Also a big standing ovation for Japan for all the work they have put in this Olympics. They even tried making it sustainable and eco-friendly and took extra precaution due to covid. It's really commendable.

Yeah I guees that's just how they're trained. It's all about the result. Get gold no matter what. Only silver? You're a failure. That mentality did give China a lot of gold medals. But I don't know. Enjoying the experience is also important I think.

@@catlover7 lol no. With such difficult things you can’t win gold with such a mentality you have to love it. There are many many who quit when they don’t have that mentality and they are being let go, it’s their choice to stay or go. In addition, this is a competition that China dominates. When the US loses gold in women’s gymnastics they also feel very much ashamed, like the current Olympics. The only difference is when the Chinese loses they just blame themselves, not something like “mental health” to score sympathy points
