I'd rather have a knife with a slight bend in it than a knife that has snapped in two
@christopherhall5361
@christopherhall5361 Жыл бұрын
a well forged and properly tempered blade should bend with use but not retain the bend, they probably used sub standard steel to cut costs, I'd rather spend $200 on a knife without any of that fancy shit, but will also never fail before the third handle replacement
@Blue_Jackal
@Blue_Jackal Жыл бұрын
Ironically I bought this knife and had some bad luck with it. The knife broke off while batoning about 1 inch down from the tip. It wasn't very bad abuse either. Steel quality is questionable, but meh. Get what you pay for. The ferro rod snapped on me while I was hiking - I fell on some rocks and it snapped off in the sheath. Given some better materials and maybe a good redesign, I'm sure it'd be a pretty good knife
@christopherhall5361
@christopherhall5361 Жыл бұрын
@GoodGuyRuska a full tang can still bend if it's not well tempered or you use shitty steel, all a full tang does is make the handle part of the blade so it doesn't break apart, it doesn't stop the tip from bending

Had the exact same knife with the sheath and everything. Window World was installing new windows in my house and stole that knife and a few other fixed blades from my bedroom (they were literally tucked far back underneath my bed against the wall which sat at 2' high and 5' wide). My father was keeping an eye on them aswell and they were fingering through the jewelry box in my parent's bedroom and were even snooping through our garage (which has no windows). Don't trust Window World employees to be alone and unsupervised in your house, or any strangers for that matter.

Had a wonderful conversation with Rob Bayley, who designed the Bear Grylls S1 and S4 Survival Knife. I remember he told me that Bear was notoriously brutal with his knives, and one fell into a crevasse, never to be seen again. I was disappointed that he switched over to the Gerber Knives. Not made in Portland, Oregon. Have both the S1/S4 models. A pure work of art by Rob Bayley of the U.K. and a good friend.

I got the non serrated version for over 8 years, maybe longer. Never let me down, and still easy to resharpen. Gone through a handful of fire sticks by now 😊 The sheath is still outstandingly strong and robusto, albeit a little worn and scratches all over, the knife still locks in place firmly, and keeps it in place firmly. Requires quite a bit of force to depart it from it's cozy rubbery home. Although it doesn't stay sharp for long (under normal bushcrafty conditions), it's an absolute workhorse that can take a beating over and over again.

I've had this knife gotta be 8-10 years now. Have the strap to my canteen fed through the sheath so it's always close by when I'm out and about. When the serrations started wearing away I just ground them down so it looks a little bit like a tracker knife now. The edge disappears quicker than most but I keep it touched up with a smooth stone I found on my driveway, after a minute or so it's good to go again. All in all its a pretty good knife, certainly doesn't deserve all the hate it received when it first came out.

These things are sold at walmart. If anything it's going to just wind up being carried around by boy scouts and deer hunters. Not everyone needs to carry the best tools money can buy, a knife like this is more than enough for a boy scout.

That serration is a beast for chopping, surpringly. Me and my buddies had this same exact knife, and while we were making a clubhouse up in the woods, we were taking young trees down like it was nothing. Not massive trees, mind you, saplings about 3-4, maybe even 5 inches around. Impressive for a little knife like that though.

No the knife is still rock solid. I didn’t take care of it because I was a kid. It sat out in the weather and I melted the serrations when I arced it on an electrical wire. So I ground off the serrations and made it smooth. And that thing is still my everyday work knife. No signs of the tang getting loose or anything. I put it through hell and it’s still a unit. Your knives have obviously been treated better than mine.

The way it bent tells me it’s not very hard and will dull easily. Of course that also means it will sharpen back up easily and in survival situations that can also be a necessity

How long do you think your survival situation is? This seems to tick all the boxes for a childrens survival knife who are unlikly to disapear for more than 48 hours. 1. it has a whistle, for easier rescue. 2. It has a ferro rod. Although I would have prefered a bic. But it at least gives them a chance to stay warm during the night. 3. They are more likely to actually carry it with them due to the brand name. 4. I mean... It's still a knife.

I completely agree. I have this knife and if the steel was just slightly better quality, then it would actually be a really well-rounded knife. I think it's a good backup or something to have, I'd rather have it than nothing. I'll give it to my son when he's in boy scouts

Had this knife as a kid and used it for over a decade all throughout boy scouts and backpacking. I still have it with no bending of the blade or damage to the handle. I would still use it as my main knife but I've switched for benchmade fixed adamas for military just because I feel more comfortable using that for prying and its a sleeker design that doesn't get in the way when on my kit. Definitely recommend the BG knife as a good knife for your kids or if you want a knife you can beat without ever worrying about chipped or bent blades

I had that knife from the day Gerber released it. Beat the living hell out of it and I have to say, it holds an edge and gets random jobs done. For $40 (now just called the Gerber Gear Ultimate Survival Knife), it’s tough to beat. I used to wear it inverted on my shoulder without the nylon part of the sheath which became the downfall. Was great for years but on a very hot hike, the plastic pressure clip softened…at some point traversing some tough spots, it must have come loose and dropped. Thinking back, when I realized it was gone, I should have circled back but I was low on water. I ordered the regular version from Gerber (mentioned above) and will see how long that one survives. Overall, great bang for your buck. I have yet to find a survival utility knife that comes with the extras for under $50 that compares. The snap-in ferro is actually quite handy.

Owned one for around10 years now. The sheathe after 10 years now has no retention, the blade has taken serious abuse but its still in one piece wothout a bend in my case. it can handle batoning and sawing with the serated section. The small sharpener on the back of the sheath has held up pretty well but its tough to use.
