Got through a multitude of videos before finding one that plays a raw hurdy gurdy without layers of electronic filtering. Most people recording hurdy gurdy at this point filter it and make it sound honestly just too clean. The raw sound from a hurdy gurdy is absolute bliss, I want to hear it straight from a mic.

Great video; but the hurdy-gurdy was probably not a maritime instrument. It is terribly sensitive to changes in climate; and tuning problems could not be easily compensated by the player, as a fiddler might.

I'm sure there were a few that went to sea in the 1,000 years of Gurdy history. They certainly would have been played in port towns, especially during the 16-1700's as there was a revival at the time. The tuning isn't as bad as you think, on a good instrument you actually have much *more* tuning capabilities than a fiddle.

What style gurdy does he use? It's 3 stringed like a lira or symphonie, but keyed like a more baroque design

Sorry this is an older comment but his gurdy is actual a 4 string. It has One chantrelle for melody, two drones and one trompette string doing the buzz! A lot of makers will do a basic model gurdy like this one. This one looks very similar to a Minstrel model made by Olympic here in the US. :)

As a player myself I can tell you just can't play the instrument properly with a floppy wrist, it took me a while to get the hang of it but you gotta play with your arm aligned to get the right sound.
