Bear Sow Searching for Lost Bear Cub

A black bear cub became agitated when it got separated from its mother. You can hear the cub calling for its mom while looking for her. When the cub went down to the bank, we were concerned it would try to cross the rapid water current to search on the other side of the creek. Fortunately, the sow arrived and began tracking the cub. When she was unable to locate it immediately, she became stressed and foam formed on her mouth. After about 15 minutes, they were reunited. Recorded at Anan Creek in the Tongass Forest, Alaska, on September 4, 2014.

Nature instills reciprocal affinity in mothers and young, thereby making them easier to shoot. The savvy hunter simply traps a wayward cub, tethers it to a tree with a length of 1/4" steel cable, then sits back and waits for Mom and kin to come running to Jr.'s aid. On a good day, such a hunter can harvest an entire family of bears with a single shot.
