I'd wager that the hunter was familiar with the bear and the drawing of the bow was just for dramatic purposes, particularly taking into consideration the casual de-tensing of the string and walking back to the camera with the bear still within easy charge distance. Either that or there was someone out of camera shot ready to pop the bear, but I'm leaning towards the former rather than the latter. I've watched enough wildlife docs with bear encounters to say with certainty that no experienced hunter or wildlife professional would allow an unfamiliar bear to get that close to him. It's nice for emotional value, true enough, just don't try this "at home".

I have seen how fast those bears can move. He could have been on the hunter before the arrow could be used. Very dangerous incident. 44 Magnum. Dont leave home without it.
@RichardHarlos7 ай бұрын
Same is true if the hunter had a 44. It's important to remember that the only guaranteed insta-kill is to sever the brain from the spine. As you mentioned, at the distance between bear and hunter in the video, that hunter would likely only get one shot. And when the bear is lunging with virtually zero closing-distance... making that insta-kill shot is so unlikely that we might as well call it 'impossible'. I admit that watching this video was thrilling to me, but there's no way I'd want to be that close to a bear that size, no matter what weapon I might have in my hands.
@HELLios67 ай бұрын

That bear was showing zero signs of aggression no need to harm him in his own habitat.
@RichardHarlos6 ай бұрын
@@Penny_Wolf I think it's important to honor the difference between 'what it looks like' and 'what it is'. It's a bear. I has no higher cognitive processing. It's pure instinct, and it has evolved (or, if you prefer, was designed) to be a predator: a very capable killing machine whenever it's instincts may lead it in that direction. They can move very quickly. They can crush a human skull quite easily. Their claws would render a deadly evisceration to almost anything on the receiving end of such a swipe. So... Unlike humans, who do have higher cognitive ability, and who are held accountable under law for certain cause & effect interactions, bears will do what bears are going to do, and that can change in the blink of an eye. And with this in mind... If one is going to err in such close proximity to such a fearsome creature, one ought to err on the side of 'maximizing survival' rather than 'extending kindness' to a creature that is incapable of interpreting such gestures as 'reasons not to attack, kill, and eat'.
@Penny_Wolf6 ай бұрын
@@RichardHarlosmy retort can be much simpler. yes there is an obvious chance it could attack unprovoked however statistically that is low, It is a creature of instinct which is observable almost all of the time. However those pesky humans with their higher cognitive ability are completely unpredictable. Id rather pput money on predicting a bears behavior then a human

I agree that in that situation, the arrow had no stopping power. As for the skull... it would surprise a lot of people to know that even a .177 pellet can penetrate a bear skull at 30-yards so... the arrow might have bounced off, or at the right angle, it might have become a head shot. But even in the best case scenario, the arrow alone wouldn't likely stop the bear at that distance.
