Route 8 cycle way is one of the hardest long distance cycle routes UK. Watch our self-guided bike tour through Wales as we cycle over mountains, alongside rivers and through beautiful forests. Our Wales wild camping adventure takes us from Cardiff on the south coast of Wales to Bangor on the North coast. This documentary film in 4K follows two friends, one beginner cycle tour adventurer called Luke and another experienced cycle tourist Chris as they navigate themselves along route 8. I came across this route on a UK cycle touring forum and purchased the maps from Sustrans. I would highly recommend this for cycling holidays in wales.
I bought the Merino T-Shirt for Chris from Joe Merino, you can get the t-shirt below. Chris loves it and they have loads of colors, and because it is Merino you don't smell!

Hi Beardies. Just returned (well, a week ago) from my Route 8 excursion. Left on Sunday 17 June and fetched up in Bangor on Wednesday 20 June - but didn't have the weather you enjoyed. I was taken by your comment three weeks ago "Never to old to get out on the bike, getting some sunshine and fresh air" but saw very little sunshine. So your other comments on video about the slog up the mountain being worth it for the reward of the view, whilst true, lose a lot of power to enthuse when there is no view to be had because of the rain and low cloud. I too came across the Old Barn Tea Room by accident, after missing the Route 8 signs and cycling all the way up to the Upper Neuadd Reservoir and, free wheeling back down in the rain, missing the turning again! I spent a miserable hour in the New Barn, steaming and dripping all over their flagstones, being stared at by families of Sunday day-trippers before using a couple of dozen of their nice fluffy flannels to dry myself off. I found the pile of sand in Barmouth where Luke came a cropper - well, it probably wasn't actually the same pile but as we and the stars are made from the same stuff I suspect we can say the same of sand. It was hard but I loved it. And hated it. How can you not?

Great video to watch fellas thank you very much. It takes me back to my teenage years when I did a lot of cycle touring. In August 1970 friend and I cycled from Coventry in the middle of England, To St David’s. We stayed in some youth hostels but also bivouacked out in the hills once or twice. So really we did a similar trip to you but from east to west and back again in two weeks. A couple of years later when I was a college I asked my new girlfriend if she wanted to go cycle camping with me to Ireland. And as the game girl she was she said yes. So we took the train to Swansea the ferry to Cork and cycled for a week and a half around there. I don’t think it put her off me because we are still married 44 years later. Safe cycling.

Beard Brothers FYI the black bleed button on the side of the gold adapter for your Lezyne pump will stop the valve cores un-doing. It releases the pressure from the pump hose but not the tube, meaning the core stays in place ;-)

Hey guys, just realised this was the video I saw ages ago that inspired me to cycle route 8 a couple of years ago! I even ended up camping at the same picnic site in Hafren Forest, fortunately Ranger-free. One of my favourites that, though they've cut most of the trees visible in one of your shots. Oh god those descents. SO good! Thank you - for inspiring me to ride it in the first place, and giving me a much-needed nostalgic watch of the route!

Great video, I could feel the pain on those hills. Good to see responsible wild camping practices, ask first if possible. The Park Ranger sounded like a bit of a jobsworth. You are both an inspiration to all cycle tourers and soon - to-be cycle tourers. Keep up the good work and ride safe.
@BeardBrothersUK

Chad The Inhaler is back! Good to hear from you again. I don't think the park ranger was a KZbin subscriber! In fairness we had been told it was OK to camp there and it was dark when we arrived so we didn't spot the sign, but it was just to get our heads down for the night and we were quick to leave once told, so no harm caused. Thanks for your kind words and encouragement, hopefully we can inspire people to get out on the road. Thanks again Luke and Chris

Hi Guys, hope you are well. I just finished ride from Cardiff Central to Bangor Station- fantastic scenery -only one puncture!. If I may say for any fully laden cyclists going S-N, not to turn off at the NCR8 sign pointing right to a seriously difficult road up through Cae Ddafydd , Blaen Nant . This is a few miles after the Y Garreg Shop and Kitchen. Yes, it is very scenic, but many times I had to get off the bike and push up very short and steep hills. My advise would be to stay on the A4085 to Pont Aberglaslyn , turn right at T junction, on to the A498, at the next T junction at Beddgelert again turn right and continue until you turn left onto the A4086 up to Pen Y Pass which is a breeze!!. Apologies if everyone knows this and I am the only silly sod who did not know this. All the best, Mike

Hi again Chris Luke ( I followed you on your HW Tour ) so I was delighted to find this tour particularly as my wife is watching rubbish on tv. Yet again this is another brilliant video and as you said Luke hopefully it will inspire youngsters to do it in the future. Just hope that "that " ranger watches this and feels a right plank for having a go at you for camping. Another jobs worth as far as I am concerned. As for me lads like you said Luke " you cant live life through a lens, but …." well I still have to set off on my own tour but until I do you two lads will I am sure be keeping me entertained. Stay safe lads Ted

Amazing! Hopefully I can encourage my Welsh mate to join me doing a similar trip across Wales this summer, inspired by this video. Look forward to your rides/recommendations on where else to go in the UK!

Cheers Sebastian, the next video will be in Scotland. I hope you manage to convince you mate to get on the bike. Wales is a beautiful place to cycle. Just be careful how many cakes you eat, I put on weight on the wales tour, ha ha ha - Luke

We do a lot of cycling as a family, we average 25 miles, our daughters are 11 & 12 and want to an expedition ride next summer. Your videos certainly give us some ideas. Obviously the ‘stealth/wild’ camping is impossible for us with children, so our routes will have to be from campsite to campsite. I am X Army so organisation & planning isn’t an issue. We are really looking forward to it. Thanks for the inspiration

Loved the video, done quite a few of the bits round near mach, there's some big old hills there. Think I might have to do the whole lot after seeing that 👍

Thanks Jim, yeah some big up hills, especially when fully loaded but, you forget the pain looking back :-) You should do Route 8, it is a hidden gem :-)

Beard Brothers that long climb up to the gate near mach is a total bitch! I'm definitely going to do the whole thing this summer after seeing this video 👍 makes me realise I'm doing OK, my bike and kit weighs between 65 and 70 lbs, but then I do go pretty minimal

I live in California, but my wife’s grandmum lives in Bridge End, Wales. I would love to cross the pond and copy your journey from Cardiff, but I would need to spend a night in Bridge End.

Hello California! If you come over just start from Bridge End and go to Bangor, Bridge End is very close to route 8 so you could jump across. Hope you manage to do it sometime, let us know if you do!
