During my stoner days as a teenager Pink Floyd was my go to music to chill and it takes me on this enjoyable journey. But since I've been introduced to Nightwish I've gone down a similar journey minus the drugs of course. I found with Nightwish even though they are heavier the poetry and lyrics are out of this world the music mixed with an Orchestral back ground takes you on a journey add two Amazing vocalists perfection in my books.

I find both versions carry sadness. The PF original is melancholic and whimsical sadness. The NW tribute is distraught, and a little bitter (given the backstory, VERY fitting). People are going to like whatever they like, but they've gotta respect both versions! 🤘

This is actually NW's tribute to Pink Floyd - they recognize as we all do the greatness of Pink Floyd. I also love both renditions. Marko is killing it with his vocals, Emppu with his guitar solos, Jukka (who had migraine, why you see Emppu standing on his podium at point to check on him - as he always do during concert with his colleagues and friends) is killing it on drums - and Tuomas, on keyboards, well, what can I say? Fantastic job from NW.

Well Nightwish is my favorite band but Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands so there is no need to argue which is better, both are amazing in their own way :) I was lucky enough in life to hear both of these versions live by both Nightwish (in 2004 during the Once Upon a Tour) and Pink Floyd (in 1994 during the Division Bell tour). Every time I think about that it sounds surreal. What is even crazier is that I caught Jukka's drumstick at the end of the concert, it's still here near me and I air drum with it sometimes while watching or listening to Nightwish :)

The Pink Floyd version is a reflective and somber song lamenting the loss of innocence and wonder as time passes and you get older. The Nightwish tribute version Is more like an emotionally driven eulogy for the death of innocence, wonder, and the simpler times of youth and youthful enthusiastic wonder. Hope that comes off right and makes sense
@Ounouh2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Marco makes it sound like he is bitter, almost angry and depressed for the loss wonder and fun that childhood had. Not just remembering how things were, but hoping one could ride that high again, but knowing you can't.

No drooling on the floor, this is the Tarja era, "End of an Era", she was backstage for this one. A lot of extra angst, you can really feel it between the guys (they had co-written a dismissal letter to Tarja, they all knew, she didn't, until after this concert). Did you notice the glare from Tuomas and when he nods his head (to Emppu? "take care of Jukka" the drummer, who was feeling bad). Marko, "the grass is greener", "with friends around me".

@Darnaguen2 жыл бұрын
Before anyone gets a chance to say it (because someone undoubtedly will): Jukka the drummer did NOT have a migraine during this show/performance, that's a weird urban legend born on KZbin. And now for some background that will give this performance a different feel: this was their final show with their first lead vocalist, Tarja Turunen. She wasn't aware of it at the time, but the guys were, which gave the entire show a certain vibe which basically culminated in this performance here. They used to play a cover song with Marco taking lead while Tarja took a breather and changed clothes (other picks during this tour being WASP's 'Wild Child', Ozzy's 'Crazy Train' and Megadeth's 'Symphony of Destruction' IIRC) and this song wasn't a coincidental choice. The atmosphere in the arena during this song in particular was something I still can't put into words and sometimes I can't even watch this or any of the other performances from the show without getting that same heavy, uneasy feeling.

😅 Finally someone agree with me! I think too it's just a rumor.

This is an old video from 2004 "End of an Era" dvd. This was the final show with their 1st vocalist, Tarja. There are some calm Nightwish songs. Marko sing one song in every show usually. This gives Floor or Tarja a chance to rest vocally and do a outfit change. Nightwish likes to think of this as a tribute to Floyd. Well done guys. What is next? So much more to experience. "Devil and the Deep dark Ocean", from Buenos Aires 2018? Did you guys know that according to Finnish tradition. Santa actually lives in Northern Finland, which called Lapland. The Finnish equivalent for Father Christmas, Santa Claus, St. Nicholas etc, is joulupukki, who has his origin in the pagan Nordic shaman tradition of people dressing up in animal disguises. Joulupukki was once a symbol of fertility and more of a frightening figure back then than today. He was clad in thick fur-lined coat turned inside out, wearing a mask and a pair of horns on his head. The name joulupukki literally means "Christmas buck" (billy-goat). Just a little Finnish cultural trivia. Our image of Santa is much more recent (18th century).

Also if it had been mentioned before I believe that this song was the same concert where at the end they handed their singer Tarja the letter to tell her to get lost basically so nobody was feeling very good or happy and on top of that the drummer Jukka was suffering start from a severe migraine and I don’t know if you’ve ever had a major headache or migraine but you can visibly see his pain how he managed to pound away of the drums I don’t know in my hats off to them and you can see at one point during the song that Thomas looks over towards the guitarist Empuu and he kind of cocks his head kind of tell him to go check on the drummer I think that is just so phenomenal these people really care about each other and it comes through their music and how they interact it’s just amazing

Marko Hietala was the bassist and vocalist for Nightwish from 2001 to early 2021. Hietala is also a singer, bassist and songwriter in the Finnish band Tarot. He also played with the bands Sinergy, Northern Kings, Conquest and the cover band Metal Gods. He also performs a lot as a guest star in Ayreon, Delain etc. Hietala has been playing guitar and bass since she was 12 years old. He studied classical guitar, singing and music theory at a college for three years. He then studied bass guitar and music theory at a conservatory for another two years. There are more Nightwish songs played without the singer like: "Master Passion Greed" and/or "Last of the Wilds" It was agreed that at least one song would be played instrumentally so that the leading singer could withdraw for dressing up and/or other lady affairs.

Both Nightwish and Pink Floyd are two of my Favorite bands. Glad you chose to watch these. I enjoy both versions. Nightwish did a good job of respecting the song yet adding their own contribution. Would’ve liked Jukka having a big bell. The keyboard bells felt a little “small” for the heaviness of the rest of the song. I think it’s time to see Nightwish’s heavier, more ‘metal’ side, and listen to Romanticide from the Wacken show. Nightwish occasionally do covers in concert. Not many, if any, studio recordings. You can find Marko singing live Ozzy’s Crazy Train, and Megadeth’s Symphony of Destruction out on KZbin as well. Keep enjoying your Nightwish journey. I’ll be watching.

If you did this then the Poet and the Pendulum live at Wembley Arena might be the one to react to next. As you have read by now - this concert was loaded with a lot of emotion. It was after this show the band handed Tarja Turunen the infamous Open Letter where they basically terminated her from the band. Somewhere in time somebody surely has stated that break -ups generate the best books, poems and in this case songs. A few pointers however: Do your research. React to the Poet and the Pendulum live at Wembley Arena with lyrics. And bring drinks, food and tissues. It's a long emotiona ride.
