Black bears are known to steal food and rummage through trash cans. Those bears that eat human food and garbage may not be learning these behaviors from their mothers, as widely assumed. Bears that steal human food are just as likely to form these habits on their own. This a compilation of thief bears caught red handed!

My parents were preparing to head back home after a 2 wk camping trip at the lake in the summer of 2008. They were spending an extra night at my grandparents' house to rest before leaving, and had packed all of their remaining food from the campsite into a huge lockbox, wrapped with tight bungee cords, and put it in the back of their truck for the trip home, thinking it'd be safe and secure. That night, while everyone was asleep, a bear came out of the woods and wandered onto my grandparents' property. It managed to lift the incredibly heavy, locked box out of my parents' truck, throw it on the ground, bust it open, and eat all the food that was inside. My grandfather discovered the huge mess in the driveway when he went outside to his garage at sunrise the next morning. He knew right away that it was a bear, just by looking at the paw prints and tracks in the dirt. Not to mention, the huge, deep scratches and claw marks down one side of the truck. (The endless forests surrounding my grandparents' property are full of bears) All that was left of the food after that was a couple of soup cans, punctured by the bear's teeth, a bag of licorice, and a single box of macaroni and cheese with a tooth mark in it. (Mom brought the damaged stuff back home to show us what the bear did) And for months after, every time she told the story to someone else, she'd always say, "I hope that bear had one hell of a stomach-ache after eating all our food. It'd serve him right!" She was more mad about everything than my dad was. 😆
