There was a (hopefully fictional) story we had to cover in high school, where a grizzly bear attacked a hiker out on a snowy mountain. The man shot at it several times as it charged at him, but it was dead set on killing him. After a fierce battle, the man managed to eliminate the bear, and somehow survived several hours in the freezing cold while being half mauled and bleeding everywhere. When help did arrive, the people that found him were surprised that he was still alive and conscious. Edit: The story is in fact real. The survivor was Jim Chirstie, and this was all the way back in 1909. After the bear fight, he walked back to his cabin which was five miles away. His brother found him, and with the help of an indigenous group, they packed him up on a dog sled, and traveled to the nearest hospital over the next 17 days. He recovered almost fully after two months of treatment and nursing by his wife. He even went into the military afterwards, most likely to fight in WW1. If that is not perseverance, I don’t know what is. That man has my respect!

For me, I'm more afraid of a Kodiak Bear than a Polar Bear, and here's why. Polar Bears are pure carnivores, but Kodiak Bears are generalist omnivores. Generalist omnivores eat whatever they can find, which tells me Kodiak Bears are far more likely to travel into human settlements and/or cities to look for their food if their regular food supply runs out.

There’s a story about these two guys who were deer hunting near a watering hole when it was frozen out and a giant Kodiak mama brown bear, walked across the lake with three cubs, and the mom caught a sniff of them and turn and started charging at them.
