Or it could be that Rampage wanted to drag Depth Charge down along with him both physically and metaphorically. Think about it, if Depth Charge had survived the Energon explosion chances are he would've been a monster too so Rampage would've won anyway.

It’s like this: BW Megatron got his name from a Covenant of Primus entity that called itself Megatron. Same with G1 Megatron. At least that’s how I interpret it.
