Didn't like the Beastie Boys initially. Note: I am old, 61 years old. I heard Brass Monkey when in Dallas in the late 80's....loved it, so much I had to get the CD to check them out. Now, I consider Licensed to Ill an amazing masterpiece, and 3 or 4 other later tunes - admittedly, they are mainstream, not deep cuts - resonate in my mind regularly. These kids, now old guys, made an impact on the level of genius - in terms of originality and long lasting impact. Respect
@kendee27494 жыл бұрын
Funny, small world, my story's kinda similar to yours except I'm 62 instead of 61 and it was San Diego instead of Dallas, but same deal.....didn't like them at first, but around the late 80's "Brass Monkey" was the cut that dragged me in, then I got Licensed to Ill and recognized it as a masterpiece, and "genius" is the word I have always used to describe them since then. I like plenty of their songs, but "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" has always been my favorite, absolutely brilliant and a helluva good rocker as well as rap.

Mikkyyo yeah but he's right about missing the 80's. It wasn't just listening to the music it was the whole scene that was historically flamboyant because it was an era. I was alive but too young to participate in any of that so I know exactly what I'm missing unfortunately. I'm not sure which is worse, being clueless and not knowing what you're missing or knowing exactly what you're missing but faking it pretty well.
@cosarimanediuncuorespezzat4746 жыл бұрын
You didn't miss much kiddo although there was some good music it was an era of terrible hair worse clothing and technically the birth of imagery over musical talent. If I could go back in time it wouldn't be to stop Hitler I would go back to the 80's and whack Madonna and Michael Jackson.:)

I love this song, I must have bought this album over a hundred of times, the Beastie Boys was the shit, Hip Hop's first multi platinum album
@zangetsu15976 жыл бұрын
That's truly interesting. I think something similar happened with early Jazz or Rock N' Roll. Perhaps it was both. Black Americans founded the genre(s), but couldn't quite hit platinum. But Elvis (for rock) and a number of white individuals for Jazz grew more popular exponentially. Not because they were better, but simply because people like representation and are more willing to support people who look like them. Louie Armstrong's skill made him go international, but he had to give his all to receive his well-deserved recognition. Someone on here made a pretty insightful comment. Black Americans create the genres, but because they make up a small percentage, their reach isn't as long as say white Americans. Therefore, when white Americans do the same thing, it gets national and international attention and becomes what we call "mainstream". I've noticed this recurring pattern for decades. Thanks for the information. Time to do more research.

what are you talking about? he would produce the dixie chicks 'taking the long way' album and work on adele's 21 album.
@Bram257 жыл бұрын
carolki13 I read a lot of artists who complain he is a name nowadays. He produced Subliminal Verses for Slipknot for instance. Corey Taylor expected a whole lot of Rick. In the end the band was very pissed Rick only showed up 2 to 3 times and went home without doing anything. Producing stuff says nothing. WHAT you produce or how you lost the touch of producing is another thing.

Rick Rubin did so much good for the rock industry, I can forgive him if he's not making anything worthwhile nowadays. All my fave bands and the albums I bought all have Rick Rubins name somewhere. Besides, who is making anything worthwhile lately? The music industry in general have been raped by the money grubbing business types.
@HD-yh4fu7 жыл бұрын
@Ophiuschus123456789 That last sentence is absolutely not true. It's easier now more than ever for independent artists to produce and market their own music. "Back in the day," if you weren't lucky enough to be discovered by some A&R dickhead for a major record label, you weren't going anywhere. Talent had maybe 30% to do with it. Plenty of talented acts probably never made it out of their hometown.
