As far as breath control goes, some of the sound effects are inhales instead of exhales and it's also about balancing the two types of techniques so you can pretty much go forever if you do it right. It's crazy impressive the level these people take it at these competitions.

When you were talking about breath control, that is very important yes, but it will be rare that you hold your breath so super long as you take into consideration all the sounds that you do by breathing in and out, and use those to create your beats :)

A lot of what he is doing is actually him breathing in while making sounds, which is what allows him to "hold his breath" like you mentioned, Stevie. There are a lot of techniques that require breathing in so he can manage it where he doesn't need to stop to take a breath. It would make anyone who's not very well practiced in doing that light headed though, so he's done a lot of practicing. D-low's crazy though. Also, if you wanna hear some sick shit look up Inertia - Smoke Bullet. He is the Inward Bass God, in a lot of people's opinions, and is my favorite beatboxer. Love your vids.

About the breathing thing. 30-40% of all the sounds you hear are inward. He’s basically breathing all the time. Most of the breathing techniques are used in the beats so you “rarely” hear them if you’re new to beatboxing.
