Regarding the Rivals Golbat, to simplify a bit (a lot) normally whenever you meet a Pokémon, a random number is generated from 1-8196 (again, simplifying a lot). If that number is 1 the Pokémon will be shiny. Trainers are guaranteed to never roll a 1, but when he increased the shiny odds, he basically made it so 2 would generate a shiny as well, but didn't change the rolls possible for trainers. So in a sense that Golbat was a true 1/8196 Shiny

Trainer Pokemon cannot be shiny outside of the battle facilities in a few games and some tutorial cutscene Pokemon. What actually happened was this shiny odds mod changed what Pokemon IDs would be counted as shiny, so the otherwise guaranteed-not-shiny by the devs trainer pokemon now have a chance of winning the new odds lottery. Jacob reset multiple times and confirmed that Golbat was shiny every time

It’s just not very good to be honest. I played Gold when it came out and not once did I think to pick it. Bulbasaur in gen 1 was actually objectively the best starter which made some people pick it over the cooler alternatives

Criticisms aside, its early movepool is quite effective against Miltank. Poison Powder, Synthesis, Reflect, all very helpful moves that you'd get on Bayleef by the third gym. Yeah the Totodile line has Rage but that requires Whitney's Clefairy to use Double Slap, which I don't often see happening. Meanwhile the Cyndaquil line basically needs Smoke Screen and that's not a good look.

Glad that a shiny Crobat got some time to shine here, since my very first shiny, (not counting gyarados obviously), was a shiny Golbat I caught in Meteor Falls in Ruby version, which eventually evolved into Crobat during the middle of one of my fights against the Elite Four. I had no idea what shiny pokemon were at the time so I even thought it was a glitch that it was a different color, and was worried when it evolved it wouldn't stay different, so I even broke out my strategy guide to compare the color of it in game with the image in the book just to see. I used the name rater to change its name to "PINK CROBA" not realizing that the last letter got cut off until much later after I'd transfered it to a different game and couldn't change it. I ended up carrying that pokemon with me throughout my journey over many years, eventually making it part of my team in every game up to and including Moon. The only reason I haven't transferred it beyond is due to just having no interest in the mainline games since then. Part of that lack of interest in general is because the newest games have completely devalued shinies as a concept with how much they've lowered the rates, though there's plenty of other reasons as well.

Back when this video first came out, I got inspired to do my own shiny-only HeartGold run. I've been trying off/on again every so often, on my physical 3DS, with no alterations to the game. So: Full original odds with no speed-up. Again, I've been trying on/off since it takes a while to reset on the actual hardware, but even still... It's been 7 months and I haven't even gotten a single shiny starter, forget about any specific one. Needless to say... I envy you.
