This is late...but you are the only one of the reaction army that has given this man his due ...and I thank you. At 55 he has been a thing for me since '83....and it doesn't get old...

View From A Hill features a certain Janick Gers, at the time yet to be from Iron Maiden. This song is probably about EMI and John Arnison. The Company is essentially a 2 finger salute to Marillion.

Nice to hear someone elses genuine mature reaction, this album has stood the test of time since I got it as a young teenage marillion fan. Wasn't the commercial hard rock I was mostly listening to, but was epic - still gets my regular plays this album. You are right about the clear sound, beats many more modern bands. Thanks for this.

Vigil was a logical continuation of Clutching At Straws (WHICH YOU MUST REVIEW JIM!!!!!!). It would have probably been the next Marillion album had they not split. The high watermark for Marillion has to be Clutching At Straws. There is nothing that Fish or the Hogarth era Marillion have done to beat this. View From A Hill is the standout track and a shame that Rothery never got chance to put this one to his name.

Great album from the big guy, probably his best fresh out of Marillion. Some of these lyrics were salvaged from the demos of his proposed fifth album with the band.

I only recently finished my own personal journey through the Fish catalogue. I was hesitant to even bother. He was a great lyricist and frontman for Marillion. But not a musician. So I feared the musicality would suffer. I wasn't crazy about this album on a first listen, but Cliché knocked my socks off. After many listens, this and his subsequent albums have certainly grown on me. He's worked well with many great musicians. And I love some of his duets with female singers. I know this album is a favorite among his fans. I don't think it's mine, though it's up there. Rain Gods with Zippos might be my favorite. Still not sure. I haven't listened to his last few albums enough times.

This is an album I have unfairly neglected over the past 20 years. It isn't hugely 'progressive' in sound but is very high class eighties pop music with excellent lyrics (huge leap from the early days of Marillion) It's worth considering what that band would have sounded like in the 90s and beyond had he remained with them. Someone said on a previous part that they preferred Fish without Marillion to Marillion without Fish (then someone disagreed with him!) Personally, I think we got the best of both worlds.

For me, the best of Fishs' solo work. Distinct from Marillion but still occupying the same space with great lyrics. I recommend the second disc of the Clutching at Straws remaster that is a mix of Seasons End music and Fish Lyrics. A fascinating glimpse into what Marillions fifth album would have sounded like.

I for one am not a fan of the song, whoever has the solo. Even before the false ending, it sounds too much like a too-sloppily-written, unsuccessful, parody of a power-ballad. (At least when John Otway does that it's actually funny).

I just finished watching all three parts. The album is extremely well mixed and produced, but most of the music did not grab me. I was excited during Vigil; that soundscape was gorgeous! But, nothing else truly appealed to me until Cliche. But those two pieces are wonderful, and if I listen to the rest again, perhaps they’ll grow on me.

Great album. Great reaction. I think much of it was written in his Marillion days. Some of the tracks made it to become Marillion demos as I recall. Easily some of his best work, Marillion and solo.

Interesting that you mentioned The The. The band Steve Hogarth turned down to join Marillion. I'm glad you listened to the last album by Fish. A garden of Remembrance (which has great video and documentary about the making of) gives me the same vibe as cliche. That's his best in my opinion slightly ahead of 13th star and A feat of consequences.

Fish sets himself apart by being a far better lyricist than anything Genesis ever did, Gabriel included. Whilst some of his albums disappoint musically, lyrically he is one of the greats. Up there with Lennon/McCartney/Davies/Partridge/Moulding.
