Known as the greatest castle never built. The vanity project of Edward I which was started in 1295, was never actually completed! But, still it is an amazing architectural delight to walk around.
It is a Concentric design - which in layman's terms means it is a castle within a castle, which if finished would have made it almost impenetrable and one of the greatest strongholds in the UK.
If it had been finished the towers themselves would have been in the region of 11 metres taller than they are now. Even without them being completed it is still the largest of the castles that was designed for Edward I. Who, unfortunately passed away on 1307 and never got to see the 'almost' completed project. As a result of his passing, the urgency to complete the castle dwindled and money was focused elsewhere.
With over 2,000 men having an input into its build and and with it costing the English Treasury in the region of £15,000 (the Treasury capital at the time was only £20,000!) Work on this magnificent stronghold was eventually stopped in 1330.
Even though it was built for defence, there was only one real battle there when Owain Glyndwr revolted and took charge with his men in 1403 - a short victory however as the English then recaptured it in 1405.
In the later centuries, it became a focus for artists and travellers who often stopped by to view and tour the structure and Queen Victoria visited it in the 1835.
Today the castle, although not as popular as others such as Caernarfon, still attracts in the region of 75,000 visitors a year and still a great place to take the family for a day.

i went here sometime 2010-11 i think when i was newly out of hospital from stroke i was still walking with a crooked stick altho out of wheelchair already i still walk limping still learning to walk properly i went in a froup of like 4 families about 9-10 persons i got lost / separated from the group i went in the castle following somebody thinking they were my companions but my newly stroked brain mistook their clothes look the same so crazy i went a bit faster catching them up but to my mistake i entered the entry to the underground dungeon using the spiral steel staircase when i saw it pitch black & still hear foosteps & chatting i was afraid to go gfurther i tried to look around until i notice a sunbeam piercin to where i'm standing so i followed the brighter footsteps going upward so slow nobody can hear/ notice me left behind i was so focused on catching up the light i unknowingly reached the top and there i was standing out in the open air so high i feel like i'm an archer shooting the enemies down i poked my head down searching for any of them but saw none of my company all other tourists now really scrutininzing similar clothes i didn't call or make noise until one of my male friend who is also searching for me from the crowd of tourists when looked up he saw me i told him ilost my way cand my way back down pls tell the ticket booth to let you in to rescue one disabled person and there he was allowed in to help me saving 11 pounds of entrance we just both laugh so lucky i didn't proceed to follow the dark path where voices can be heard otherwise i'd down there if i fell down & got severely paralyzed no one would know i was there. thank you Lord for the light and for healing me& keeping me away from the london bus( my daily morning bus) which they bomed in july7 2005 i had stroke the next day.

Your story (and your typing! 😉🤪😄) is exactly what daily life is for me. I haven't had a stroke, I have ME. I got lost trying to get him from our local corner shop last week. My husband and I went to Beamaris castle last summer. We went to North Wales for our 30th wedding anniversary, we went there because I get 'hiraeth' very badly and one of the places I love to be is beaumaris castle. I identified so much with your story it made me cry, so I wanted to respond and say thank you.
