Something that gets overlooked is Nina telling Shin "thank you" after he leaves the picture, which was a big lesson her brother taught her when someone does something nice for you. It hit me pretty hard.

As a collective, these three episodes might be the best I’ve seen from any anime, and if the previous 20 episodes didn’t do it, these final three episodes made 86 a masterpiece. Ep 21 probably had some of the best mech fighting scenes I’ve ever seen, and a lot of that was because the CGI and sound was so on point. That’s one of the things I loved about this series as a whole - when CGI had to be used, it was done right. Ep 22 had some of the best production in any anime episode I’ve ever seen. The way they played around with aspect ratios, color, and even the way they positioned Lena and Shin in their shots - it was just perfection. The Evangelion vibes were extremely strong during Shin’s mental breakdown. This was on a completely different level than what was in the LN. And then in Ep 23, it was such an emotional yet perfect way to close out season 1, but left a bunch of Easter eggs that those of us that have read the LN could identify, causing us to anticipate a season 2 even more. Asato Asato, the author of the LN series, tweeted that she cried after watching the finale. I don’t think there can be any greater compliment for a studio when you make the author cry like that. Now we just wait for an announcement for season 2.

Not really. All mecha action is CGI. It's cheap and quick to make. A decision made at the start of the pre-production. Hand drawn mechanics are are not gonna happen in contemporary production climate where 100+ series get cranked out every season, where teams are overworked and juggle half a dozen projects at any time - animating complicated machines and keeping them on model in dynamic action sequences requires time and manpower, which is something not really readily available nowadays. The issues with this anime were much more fundamental and inherent to the industry as described above. Team being overworked, having to dabble in too many projects all at once lead to production literally collapsing on itself several times and necessitated delays to salvage the situation, not any specific sequence.

@@TheKain202 what do you mean by cheap, its often far more expensive than hand-drawn animation, because it CAN save time. If done correctly it also can deliver a consistent quality throughout. The cg in 86 was well implemented and from the direction and fluidity of animation you can tell it probably was a whole team (mostlikely inhouse) specialized in 3d. The anime still had an extremely tight schedule and problems, the reason the last episodes got delayed so much (in addition to the strict airing schedule). Its hard enough to match the cg elements with the rest of the composition.

In episode 9, as the Spearhead squadron are leaving range of the PARA-Raid, one of the last things that Lena hears is them talking about a field of red flowers before they leave her. In episode 22, the place where the Morpho is destroyed is in a field of red flowers just outside of the Republic of San Magnolia. Lena finds Shin in the same place where they left her when the Spearhead went on their special recon ; w ;

Hey guys I just wanted to give some extra deets from the LN such as how the federacy reacted to the republic. So first the day catastrophe struck, the Republic founding festival. That years High-school valedictorian went on stage and protested the republics treatment of the 86, most laughed at him, some said nothing and some secretly agreed with him but said nothing, unable to speak up. Then the republic was destroyed, but the Alba citizens didn't repent their sins, they blamed others, believing themselves to be the victims till the end, the Republic citizens were slaughtered by the millions (I think there were 10mil alba living but after they were reduced to 1mil). Next the Federacy of Giad shows up with state of the art weaponry and begins pushing the legion out of Republic territory. The Alba welcomed them with applause but unfortunately for them the Federacy somehow knew of the persecutions. The Federacy led an 86 Rescue Operation so they saw the internment camps for themselves. Remember the war has only been going on for 10 years so alot of the federacy people had relatives that lived in the republic before the war, and then they come and find this. Safe to say they were NOT happy The operation commander would go on to tell the President and other high officers of the republic "if you hated color that much, you may as well have dyed your flag white". Things got better tho, the federacy discovered that some Alba was secretly keeping records of the 86 since this man had gone to school with many of them in the past. Unable to bear the guilt any longer he marched to the Frontline and was never seen again. Things did not end there tho, eventually the federacy found journals of inmates detailing the atrocities that had been committed. 86 would come forward with their own stories, videos were found of Republic soldiers crimes against the 86, they found documents of human experimentation and trafficking of infants, and finally they found a great number of skeletons buried beneath the camps and inside the fortress walls. After that there were comments saying that they should abandon the republic but that didn't happen. The federacy said "let those who know shame suffer from it until their dying day. And any pigs incapable of feeling shame don't even warrant attention of acknowledgement" I believe the number of surviving 86 was 10 thousand, I can't remember how many there was before the war but somewhere in the millions. Sorry if this was long. If I got anything wrong please correct me. Hope yall found this interesting!! Glory to the fuckin spearhead squadron!!!

Fido having a video of Shin tells us, Fido was there when Shin was a child... there's no other way for him to get that video. Fido is a remnant of Shin's past and Shin doesn't even know it.

In my decade of watching anime, I can say that only 86 has made me feel different emotions I couldn't describe. its my favorite out of hundreds I've seen. you wouldn't enjoy it fully by just watching it once. You have to watch it multiple times to appreciate everything especially the hidden details beneath scenes of a show not tell format. Brilliantly directed anime. The music was GODLY. It was never outright stated that Shin was back again to the accursed sector, but we were shown map, san magnolia statues, french street sign an episode prior. If you missed those, you can't anticipate their meeting. The symbolisms involved also. I WON'T FORGET

A-1 did such a good job in adapting this despite all the problems they faced. And it's been a pleasure re-watching this along with you my guy, enjoyed your reactions. After my like n-th rewatch I noticed there are multiple clues about the squad going west after the Morpho into the Republic area. There are various hints out there mostly in episode 20 and 21 like maps shown and road signs, broken down statues etc.

So basically. In Episode 20 or 19 we see destroyed cities which looked like cities from san magnolia with the mascot of san magnolia. We also saw direction signs with names that come from san magnolia. So they fight the legion back and landed on san magnolia ground. We heard Lenas voice in ep 21 and saw the mortars, used in ep 9. So I don't get why it shocked or confused you that Lena is there in EP 22

If you stop the moment Fido showed the video of Shin, you can know that Fido stay with Shin since he was a baby.(which seem to be impossible cuz Shin found Fido in the battlefield.)The truth is Shin’s father created Fido as a dog robot to be friend with Shin. That’s why Shin can understand Fido while others can’t. (Even Shourei can’t understand Fido better than Shin.) After Shin’s parents and Shourei went to the battlefield, Fido decided to seek for them so he became the scavenger.(I’m not sure how Fido covert himself into the scavenger anyway.) Fido couldn’t find three of them and he was nearly broke down, and Shin found Fido in the battlefield. The anime didn’t mention so much about the races in 86 setting, but I think it’s quite important.(I understand that the story has to be brief. They can’t put so much specific details in the anime.) Shin’s father has Onyx race (people who have Jet-black hair and eyes.) which is the race of the noble in Giad Empires and Shin’s mother is Pyrope(people who have blood-red hair and eyes, a noble, too). The Onyx have high ability in combat. The Pyrope have abilities in psychometry.(That’s why Federica can see the past and present, she has the pyrope blood. Pyrope people don’t have the same ability if they’re from different clan, Federica got from the imperial blood while Shin got from his mother’s clan - Maika) In the Ep that Annette told the truth about PARARAID, she told that the family can telepath between their members, that’s the ability from Shin’s mother. After Shin was choked, his ability changed into hearing the death.

The final battle in ep 21 is a bit confusing in the anime. From the LN - they are fighting in San Magnolia territory - the noise from Shin's para-raid was Lena commanding the army left in San Magnolia. They were the one attacked Kiri with missiles and artilleries.

Thank you for the reaction! Been looking forward to these! Honestly, the only nitpick I really have about ep 22 is her uniform...it's totally impractical for being on the battlefield. That aside, she is literally the catalyst for Shin's change. "I've had enough death in this show" Totally agree...I haven't caught up on the LN, but it really seems they have a core set of Spearhead characters now, the one that don't get killed off. People have pointed out how Theo is using color in his artwork now, I love that change too. Also, like seeing how more of the young generation are putting aside the prejudice, something we saw in ep 1 and when Lena rallied the 86 to defend the Republic. The military jerk behind the desk is also the same one that lectured her in ep 12. He's now under the scrutiny of Giad and is trying to curry favor by sucking up to her good side (which she is totally not going with lol). I like how when they speak to her when meeting her, almost all of them say something related to what they wrote on the drawing. This is my favorite season finale...so satisfying!

I think that's very representative of San Magnolia. They only have formal wear, no 85 District soldier had Battle gear, that was for the 86. So I think it actually really enhances the idea that San Magnolia was completely unprepared to fight.

From the moment the ParaRaid connects and Shin figures out who Lena is.... his excuse of "getting his shit together first" is just a front. The rest of Spearhead pranks him hard with the recording, then they get EVERYONE in on the epic Trolling of Lena, redacting the Federation crew roster, slipping in while she visits the 86 memorial with Fido1, they are as always S-Tier pranksters. If Lena had a Tsundere bone in her body, she woulda totally DECKED Shin. Now we can get Annette and Greta to tag-team on new tech! Huzzah!!

Those little butterflies around the Morpho are its energy rechargers. Ep21 ended with a very brutal cliffhanger as we had to wait for 86 days, it was not torture anymore:( For non LN peeps, this is some info as to how Lena was able to sync with Shin during this battle: Some genius in the Federacy’s R&D department who were in charge of reverse-engineering the RAID devices decided to play a joke, what if they stealthily put the default settings of the Republic’s device into their reverse-engineered ones to see of they would synchronize? Notice during the battle with Kiri before the bombardments came, Shin’s device glowed green instead of yellow and a faint “fire” command was heard. The barrage that hit the rear of the Morpho’s gun before the mortars came in were actually from Juggernauts. Theo making fanart of Shin&Lena cracks me up everytime🤣, from follow me! to let’s go! and finally to come on!, followed by copium-induced defense from jelly Kurena. After Fido ran past, Shin went to defensive mode immediately by putting his right hand in front of Lena, our reaper is smitten with our queen. If you look at the photo closely, you’ll see that Kurena positioned her right leg between Shin and Lena, jelly lady Gunslinger indeed. What can I say? It was quite the pleasure joining you in this adventure of watching 86.
