I was stationed at Kagnew Station, 4th USASA. Field Station in the early 60’s. Beautiful, the people were gracious for being in the Army this was paradise. Paid houseboys, paid KP’s. Easy to sight see. The food was incredible tried many restaurants and street food. Never got food borne diseases.7200 ft above sea level. The weather was cool never very hot! Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia and even in the 60’s they hungered for own state. Basically it was being in Italy from language to food. The local food was a treat. Amazing sights. Loved taking the littorina from Asmara to Massawa on the Red Sea. From 7200 ft to Massawa at sea level in only about 60 miles.

Way before the White man stepped in Africa, Mosses crossed the "Erythrean Sea", to liberate his Jews people from Egyptian slavery. The sea was named after Eritrea, as described in the Old Testament of your Bible. 2. Asmara was named by local villagers, a group of women from a place still being called "Arbate Asmara", (union of four). 3. In 1885, Menelik invaded Oromos, expanded & renamed Abyssinia to Ethiopia.
