Matt, when the fish is freshly caught, the texture will be firm, but if you wait a few days, it will become softer. That's what I've observed on what sushi chefs do. Maybe you can try it out for a better experience!

Wow, looks like those things fight way harder than chinook up in the bay! I’m not 1000% sure on this but I’d do some reading on it-I think you have to be careful eating raw fish now days because of the high risk of parasites 🦠. Almost all sushi restaurants freeze their fish first now days to kill anything that could be in the meat. Just something I’ve heard and thought I’d let you know 🙌🏻. Great video! Definitely gets the stoke up
@ahndeux4 жыл бұрын
When the fish get up to the 35+ lb range, they are absolute beasts and thugs in the ocean. They will rock you and they are very SMART! If you are in the kelp, they will go through the kelp and hang up your gear. If you are in the rocks, they head straight into the rocky area to break you off. When you are in the rigs, they go straight into the structures to break you off. Your only chance is to put the boat in gear, hang on to the rod and try to yank them away from the kelp or structures before you lose it. Once you are in deeper water away from the structure, you have a fighting chance. They will leave you breathless during the fight so you have to keep reminding yourself to breath calmly when the adrenaline is pumping.
@sterlingzubel67524 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, I was kind of wondering if they were going to do the light trick to try to carefully inspect the thin slices they cut for themselves and it looks like they didn't. Freezing is best, but careful inspection should be enough to allow for a quick bit on the water like that.

You're getting good Matts, I'm proud of you! Came a long way from when you were getting tips on the butter boat. What a lot of people don't realize is that becoming a good fisherman is mastering the skills of managing timing for about 5 different screw-ups all trying to get you at the same time. Managing constant small adjustments in boat speed and direction, positioning, lines in or out to prevent tangles, hazards like sea lions/weeds on your gear, and doing it all efficiently enough so you're not spending all your time fixing mistakes instead of fishing hahaha. A good deckhand is worth their weight in gold. Train your boys to be good too.

Great video Matt! Way to battle the seals. Btw, the yellowtail you ate would be way different than those you eat at a reputable sushi restaurant. The "Hamachi" they serve are yellowtail caught in the deep waters of the western Pacific Ocean. They have a much higher fat content so are more buttery and tender than yellowtail caught in our local waters. It's like the difference between an A5 Wagyu steak and a USDA Choice steak.

Another thing i would recommend on your surface iron setup is to move your reel down quite a ways on the cork tape. General rule of thumb is to have the butt of the rod be even with your elbow as you palm your reel (hopefully that makes sense!). Also, try reeling into those jig bites instead of setting the hook. It'll penetrate their mouthes rather than jerking it away. Keep up the good work brotha!

Man that's the best spot! I remember the first time I went to the Catalina Islands on the Daily Double with Boogie Shears and Milford Shears. Boogie is my uncle and Milford my grandfather. Great Yellowfin and Bigeye Tuna, if ya some chum. The first fish I caught that morning, or anyone one else on the boat, was just outside of the baiting station in San Diego. The first two hooked snapped the line, just to find out that it was Barracuda I was hooking and the teeth are so sharp that they just cut through the mono like butter. But the third hooked I managed to get on deck. That cuda almost took the boat pot, shy by 16 oz. Had to cut the fillets three times to get them in the frying pan, lol! That day has to still be one of the most memorable days I ever spent with my grandfather before he past. RIP Milford DeeDee Shears.
