Foix and the Region
In the South of France, more precisely in the Occitanie region, is Foix, a rather small, historical town.
Very typical of the South, the downtown features lots of trees - People spend time outside, and they look for some shade as it gets quite hot in the summer months.
Narrow streets are winding up everywhere all the way to the castle. So, the access to the castle is directly from the old downtown and you can walk to it - You don’t have to drive. Plus, it adds a tremendous impact to the downtown life and general feeling.
The medieval castle dominates the old town and also overlooks the newer parts of town.
If you ever go there, I recommend you take the tour. It is very comprehensive and interesting, but for the moment, I will let you take a peek through these few pictures.
We are now leaving Foix, on the way to Montsegur, in the Cathar country.
Montsegur is a very quaint village - quiet, remote, with some very traditional food in the only restaurant that was open on that day.
Above Montsegur is the chateau de Montsegur, the cradle of Catharism in France in the 13th century.
600 people lived there, on that site. It was a rather safe refuge for this large community, persecuted by the church. Ultimately, more than 200 perished, burnt alive because of their own religious beliefs - a very tragic end… a tragic page of the history book.
