If you want to change anything about the electronics with this guitar, you would unscrew the input Jack, unscrew the pots with the knobs taken off, and pull everything through the pick up cavity. Then you would make whatever changes you want to do outside, and then use a wire to pull everything back through to the input Jack and holes for pick ups. Strings and hooks.

I want to sart a hollow electric project for months now, I inherited an Gibson L-48 and I'm really loving the body shape, way more comfortable to play in the lap than I thought it would be. It's got me looking at weird Soviet L-5 copies on reverb just so I don't have the urge to Frankenstein my Grandpa's old archtop lol.

7:25 - It is ABSOLUTELY possible to replace the pots, switches, and electronics on this guitar. Typically on hollow and semi-hollow guitars, you have to do the soldering outside the body and then fish the components through the F holes. Slightly more difficult than on a solid body guitar, but not much. Practically ANY luthier worth his salt should have experience with this and be able to do it without too much trouble. So I wouldn’t worry too much about that. 🙂

I bought this model for my son's friend. She was finishing a guitar program & wanted a single pickup, hollow body for jazz. I. He wanted to originally build her a new guitar, but didn't understand how much was involved. I convinced them to get a lower price instrument & finish it properly. He visited during xmas break & we had a good time in the shop. It was a decent build, but we spent 4 days getting it up to snuff. The inlays were proud of the fretboard, the frets weren't really well shaped or polished. 1st the fretboard was properly finished, edge rolled for playability, then the frets were leveled, filed & polished. All electrics were pitched; Kent Armstrong vintage neck P90, new vol, custom 6 way varitone & better output jack, were installed. Finally the neck was rubbed down to remove most of the poly & buffed to a smooth satin finish. Restrung w/flatwound Thomastik strings. The headstock is a bit clumsy & I would have re-cut & drilled out out to make it more in line w/the look. Not enough time & that was purely cosmetic. When finished, a few of my friends were enlisted to revue(with headstock covered). Favorite quote, "This guitar plays better than anything I have at the store!". I guess we did alright. Sound was awesome. All total, the upscale parts were a little less than the price of the guitar. So, for

I walked into a bar one night and it had a staircase going up to where the band was and I could hear the most amazing sounding guitar on the stairs. I mean it was noticeably better than anything I've ever heard I couldn't wait to just see what it was. When I reach the top of the stairs I was in amazement it was a Gibson 330 and it was played loud through a marshall combo. It had the most warm incredible sound that I rarely ever hear because usually guys are playing solid bodies.

I bought mine (red also) and loved it as-is. I did make a few changes. Added a .25 inch spacer under the pickup. Had a Wilkinson P-90 bridge pickup in my box of random parts and swapped it out with the factory pickup. Changed to phosphor bronze d’addario acoustic rock strings with a wound-G. Fretboard was very dry and soaked up a LOT of lemon oil. That’s it so far and it sounds great. Picked up a replacement bridge with roller saddles but haven’t put it on yet.

Sounds great with the stock pickup, saddle, pots, etc. I am sure 99.99% of people in an audience hearing you play this guitar with just a string change can't tell the difference with updated pots and pickups.

I bought one for $189 before the holidays, but I had to do a fret leveling, file sharp fret ends, put a 1/4” spacer under the pickup to get it closer to the strings, replaced the nut with a Tusq Nut, and put Grover Tuners on it. The finish is really beautiful.

Another great demo, review, and video. Your clean jam at the beginning is the style of guitar I play the majority of the time, as in almost exclusively. I just throw in a little delay, reverb, and tape echo from time to time, when the mood hits. I'm glad you made this video. (Note, I think the repairs are done through the F-Holes. If you want to change something and are that concerned about being able to get the pot back in place, just tie something like fishing line to the pot when you pull it through the F-Hole. You can untie it and tie it to the new or re-soldered pot when you want to pull it back through. Now, the pickups would probably present more of a challenge.) Please keep the great videos coming, Richard.

@@thebaldshredder easiest way to install pots is to run a piece of bendable wire into the pot hole and angle it back out through the pickup opening or the f-hole. Attach the wire to the pot stem then feed it back into the body cavity and withdraw end of the wire back out of the pot hole, bringing the pot into place. Feed the loose end of the wire through the washer and nut and run them down the wire into the stem and use the wire to keep the pot in place as you tighten the nut and washer in place.

Crank it through a marshall combo for natural distortion for some 60s-70s blues rock. The feedback can be hard to control but the air moving around inside the guitar combined with the natural distortion creates such a beautiful warm sound.

A floating bridge means that the bridge is not glued or pined or bolted to the body. It moves around when there is no string tension. To not alter the intonation when changing strings, change one string at a time.

@the bald shredder I don't know if anyone else mentioned it but, the two ways I know of for getting the pots into the holes without a rear access panel is to 1- ties thread or string to the original pots before removing them or use rubber tubing which will slip over the shaft of the pots. Then you use the string or tubing to pull the new pots into position. The other way is to try and get your fingers into the f hole to manipulate the pots into place.

You tie fishing line on the shaft of the pots, and pull them out thru the largest part of the f hole, to replace the pots you simply take the fishing line off the shaft of the old pots, hook it to the shaft of the new pots and pull the fishing line and pots right back into place, make sure everything is soldered together first&, mimics the old wiring.

I think the type of solos this guitar will really shine on are slow simple melodic with less notes . Focusing on feel and tone (if played with natural tube distortion). I know that typically isn't your style but for stuff like The Doors or Allman Bros for example this is a perfect match .

Dear BS, great review, but I am dissappointed. While you told us about the frets (THANK YOU!) there was no mention at all about the neck profile, the neck/nut width, or the radius of the fingerboard. Please consider an addendum including these details. Finally, you are correct, the pots are fed throught the f-holes for work. Attach a string to the pot shafts. The string is used to re-position pots in their original holes.

I don't see the point in it and life's too short to spend time trying to find a place or play style to suit or justify a guitar purchase. Wow you're talking about two different styles of guitar here. The RZT22 only has that one pickup and it's close to the neck so it's a fuller less bright tone. It's wonderful for cleans. But the Fesley has 3 pickups and much better for rock or metal. I don't have the Fesley anymore so can't compare the weight. Both are very good. Just depends on what style of music you want to play on it.
