Hi Garden Friends, The Raised Bed garden is bursting with blooms and vegetables now in late August. I love cutting flowers regularly and making flower arrangements for myself and for friends. This garden went through an amazing transformation this spring with the addition of vego raised beds. In just 3 short months, I can't believe how beautiful things are looking. I still have to pinch myself that this beautiful space is in my backyard. Also, I share a great hack for growing your cherry tomatoes using a super simple way to keep them staked. Hi Steph, I wanted to share a tip with you. Reuse a plastic sports drink bottle as a vase when you bring cut flowers to your friends. Cut the bottle at the neck and wash off the label. Besides up cycling something plastic, it is sturdy and fits perfectly into your cup holder for easier transport!

Hi Steph, your raised bed garden is looking so full and lush and beautiful. Love all the plants. I’m loving my Zinnia’s this year also and will definitely be planting them all over next year. I’m also going to try Dahlia’s for the first time next year. Yours are sooo beautiful. Nice to see that the plants I gave you are doing good and you like them. It looks like you ended up with only the yellow cosmos but there’s also orange. They do self seed but I’m going to separate the seeds this year by color. Great video.❤❤❤ say hello to George.

I think sunset runner beans would look nice growing on your entrance arbor. They bloom soft salmon pink flowers, which would look nice against the dark color of the arbor. Bees and hummingbirds love the flowers as well. And it also produces edible beans. I grew them for the first time this year and I plan on growing them every year, because the flowers are just so pretty. I got my seeds from bakers creek.

Your garden looks gorgeous. I adore the renovation. Here is a tip. Bait and recruit earwigs to work in your favor. I constructed a bottomless wastebasket using stainless steel chicken wire and secured it with zip ties. It's not fancy. But feel free to get creative. Around the basket, I planted multi-colored lettuce and applied mulch. You can use any plant that earwigs are attracted to in your garden. Use taller plants to better conceal the wire basket if aesthetics is a concern for you. I noticed earwigs in my lettuce last year, so I chose that. It's inexpensive to grow and has thin foliage, which they love. Use mulch to help retain moisture when you plant it. I used the organic variety from Miracle-Gro. Do not let it go dry. Fill the center of the basket with garden debris such as wilted flower heads, leaves, weeds that have not gone to seed, and small twigs. It won't smell because air circulates through the chicken wire. You will earwigs, worms, beetles, lady bugs, and bees that are still feasting on the wilted flowers. It's a bug fest. Keep the area relatively damp - this is crucial, as earwigs love damp debris. They don't even make much of a mess with the lettuce to be honest because they're more attracted to what's inside the basket. By providing them shelter and food, they can work for you by breaking down the organic matter and be beneficial rather than a nuisance.

Steph and George thank you for the video. The garden is amazing. Those black cherry tomatoes are large. Where did the seeds come from? Benary giant zinnias are disease free more than some other zinnias. Marigolds are very nice for fall.

Hi Steph😊 Last year at the end of the season my window boxes on our guest cottage were looking quite straggly. I transplanted some marigolds that had reseeded. They were a bit leggy but they transplanted well and filled out. They lasted way into the fall. I am in the same situation again but don’t have any marigolds to transplant. Haven’t been able to find any at the box stores. I think marigolds are a great fall annual.
@HookedandRooted3 ай бұрын
I agree Peggy! They are great fall annuals.

I bought a very large Cordyline for the first time this spring and it's glorious and I get a lot of compliments on it in an urn with other things. You said you wintered over yours. I want to do the same with mine. Do you think if I bring the entire urn into the garage which is attached to the house and put it by the window which gets sun it will be ok? There is a small wall heater in the garage we can run for a few hours too if it gets extremely cold during the winter. I really want to keep this plant for next year! Thanks!

You've done a great job with your garden! There are always things that don't go well even though we do everything supposedly "right." Do you get powdery mildew on your Benarys and Queenie Limes? I pretty much gave up on them and have been planting the Zahara and Profusion varieties, and cultivars of zinnia haageana, which are all pretty mildew proof though the flowers are small. The big double zinnias are really beautiful so every year I am tempted to try again. I enjoy your channel as I am in Zone 6b/7a in the Hudson Valley so pretty similar to your climate in MA. Also, you have converted me to shopping in the big box stores. I always assumed they just sold red geraniums and orange marigolds but the other day I snagged some discounted PW hydrangeas at HD. I appreciate your updates on what they are carrying.
@HookedandRooted3 ай бұрын
Hi there! I haven't had the powdery mildew yet, but I do have lots of disease spots on the lower leaves and they are mostly on my queen lime ones so far, and I haven't noticed it as much on the benary's to this point. The lower leaves are also spotted on my polar bear white and enchantress zinnias. I peal them off when I can. Thank you so much for your comment, and for watching 🥰🌱

I tried scabiosa for the first time and so disappointed too, they look pretty sad. But the zinnias I started for the first time made up for it , they are just crazy pretty!! I will have to try my golden cherry tomato plant on my arch, I lost complete control of it this summer lol

Hi Chantal! I agree, the scabiosa was just so blah. I forgot to show the craspedia, but that one was a flop as well. I just moved some yesterday because maybe it wasn't getting enough sun. We'll see how they do for the rest of the season. The zinnias are gorgeous! I'm glad you agree. Such an easy and pretty annual. 100% try the cherry tomato on an arbor, you wont be sorry. 💚

Quick question I hope you can answer me on this Steph🤞🏻. Do you purposely avoid overhead watering on some plants like Echinacea and Rudbeckia...my experience has been that it tends to go south fast when you do that with them as their foliage crispens up and they just wither. Is bottom watering your recommendation?
@HookedandRooted3 ай бұрын
Yes, exactly! I do avoid overhead watering whenever possible. My husband makes a great point where when it rains they get watered from overhead, but the issue is when we supplement with watering, it can be "too much" overhead watering which can ultimately bring on those plant diseases. I try whenever possible to get to the roots vs, overhead when watering.
