Billy Joel is a fabulous songwriter, a terrific singer and fantastic piano player! This was one of his more low energy songs, but it's wonderful songwriting. He has a LOT of GREAT songs! I would really like you to react next to New York State of Mind also live from The Old Grey Whistle Test. He has too many great songs to name them all, but among the best are Piano Man, Goodnight Saigon, Just The Way You Are, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, Honesty, Only The Good Die Young, I've Loved These Days, Big Shot, For The Longest Time, Pressure, Vienna, The Stranger, Uptown Girl, Anthony's Song (Movin' Out), My Life, Allentown, Say Goodbye To Hollywood, Root Beer Rag, and so many more. The song, For The Longest Time, really shows off his singing because it's an a capella multi-part harmony, and on the studio version, he sings all the parts. Root Beet Rag is an original Ragtime song that he wrote that really shows how great of a piano player he is! He's just one of the most talented musicians ever!

I suggest you do “Piano Man” next. It’s what made Billy Joel a household name. Most of us had never heard his music before that but we wanted more, and he’s delivered for half a century. The official video, with him playing in a bar, was shot years later but it uses the original studio version for the audio, so you get the best of both worlds. (He has very well done and entertaining videos.) The other two I recommend to follow that up are “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” and “New York State of Mind”. That last one should also be from The Old Grey Whistle Test. Fantastic performance!

Several have already been suggested, to which I would add just these few: We didn’t Start the Fire, Vienna, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, Lullaby, River of Dreams, New York State of Mind and Downeaster Alexa…..the list goes on and on. I remember hearing this song playing on loudspeakers in the plaza in front of the World Trade Centres when they were burning. It leaves me with an eerie feeling ever since. He's an excellent composer, singer and musician. Among my favourites are "Allentown" (live) and "Uptown Girl". He has filled stadiums for decades. I believe he played the last concert ever performed at Shea Stadium.

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. Give a listen/ watch the live 14-minute version of Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Or Glad/ Freedom Rider. Also from the same live concert and about 14 minutes long. Both songs feature sax Guru Chris Wood. Studio versions aren't but about 1/4 as long. Extra time is in very long solos. 🤠🐂

I would not call this a "love song." It's a descriptive song. The portrait may be of someone the writer loves or loved, but it's really about "her." It is a very powerful portrait and it is lovingly done, but is it a "love song?" Debatable. Contrast it with Queen's "Killer Queen" and you may see what I mean.
