I am a bonus dad. I have 3 children who are not biologically my kids. I never had biological children. But these kids are mine and nothing will ever change that. I am so blessed to have them, to have watch them grow, to love them unconditionally. To know that level of love. They say the kids get a bonus parent, but I believe it was a bonus to me, it added to my empty life. I love this song, both versions. To my kids. I love you so much. ALWAYS!

Love this song! It reminds me of the wonderful Daddy that adopted me & my sister! My Mom had two girls in diapers & he took us both to raise as his own when he married our Mom! First off, thank you for what you are doing. I met my wife when our son was 4 and daughter was 1. They are now 40 and 37. There have been many hard times, but they have always been my kids and the biggest part of my life. This song, somehow our story of "my boy" and me as he grew up.

I never knew my birth father but was adopted by my stepfather at a young age. However, in my early teens, my mother got divorced and he was gone. In my late teens, God revealed to me that he was my true Father and would show me true adoption. A few years later I met and married my wife of now 24 years who had two girls and I became a stepfather to them. I ended up never having any biological children but my wife & I had opportunities to take in numerous families who were homeless for various reasons and most of them became spiritual children and grandchildren. We now have two children (3 & 6) we are raising and working toward adoption. This song My Boy hits me every time and expresses my heart for my son and that moment when he called me "daddy." There are many bonds of relationships: Spiritual, Love, Law, and blood; spiritual bonds transcend all others but next to spirit is the bond of love.

My sons dad is a “stepdad”. We got together when my son was a year and a half. He’s 13 now. “Stepdad” and I broke up 7 years ago and he’s been dad all this time. We share custody and responsibility and he’s dad in every sense of the word.

We first met our daughter two days before she turned 7 months old. We were finally able to adopt her the week of her third birthday. A few days before her adoption, we met our son. He was 15 months old, and we adopted him 10 months later. They are the biggest blessings of our lives, and have never been anything but "our" kids. They are late-teens now, and have known they were adopted since the beginning but their friends are often shocked. Honestly can not imagine my life without my husband and our kids. ❤

I had a step mom who I didn’t appreciate as a child. Once I entered adulthood, I realized how much she did for me and my two sisters. I now have nothing but love for her. Even though she and my father are no longer together. We stay in touch & I’ve made it extremely clear how much she means to me. As a child, I didn’t make it easy for her. I was a true brat in every sense of the word. I’m so glad that I got the opportunity to apologize to her for my bad behavior. And to make it clear, how much she means to me.

My dad, who was technically my step-dad, passed away about 10 years ago. He met and married my mom when I was 15 and my sister was 12. Tough ages. He told me once that he had made up his mind a long time ago that he didn’t want to be in a relationship with anyone who had children, but when he met my mom? He just knew she was right for him and of course, there we were. My dad adored my mother, and me and my sister were the light of his life. We couldn’t have been more his daughters if we had been born to him. In 1999, when my husband and 9 year old daughter were killed in a car accident, my dad was my rock, my strength, my safety net, even though the loss my daughter almost killed him too. I always told people he was my dad because he chose to be. He was an exceptional man that I was blessed to have had in my life and it was a privilege to have called him my dad. I miss him everyday. Being a great dad has nothing to do with blood or DNA. It comes from the heart.

My kids call my hubby Dad & he is the one who has been there for them the last 30 plus years. The reason they are called stepparents is because they stepped up, acting as real parents, as far as I'm concerned. I love this one. Brad Paisley has a great one on this subject too, called 'He didn't have to be'. As for adoption? My parents took in many foster kids over the years & finally adopted my sister. Best gift ever. Now my parents & brothers are gone & she the last sibling I have left and I am grateful... especially that I am 10 years older than she is & will hopefully go first.

This song needs to be played over loudspeakers in every community. It underscores the primitive, ridiculous "need" too many people have that their children be "blood". There are just too damned many children in this world already, with no homes at all or horrible ones. They should be our priority, not making more to crowd those out of all hope of having a stable home. This song expresses one small part of the fix - that step-parents need to go into relationships with open hearts and full commitment. Beautiful, poignant lyrics, and it's wonderful that he made a My Girl version.

I'm not a stepchild, but I am a stepmom. I raised 2 kids whose mom abandoned them essentially, their dad got sole custody. They are special needs, asperger's, autism, adhd. They're adults now, the oldest didn't and doesn't appreciate the sacrifices, the youngest does to a certain extent. I also have my own son who is in between the 2 I took on, with autism and developmental disabilities. My husband took him on as a stepson.

Now as men we have to be careful in this situation. If you don't adopt it could be a bad situation. Say you meet a woman and she has a kid or even two. The kids are young. Yall move in together start making house or playing house either way. Even if yall get married. Five years pass feeling for yhe kids are high there's a bound between you and the kids. Cause you been raising them as yours . Year 6 you and the mom start having problems. She leaves with the kids. You have no say over those kids. Now she's gone, the kids you been raising as yours, you can't see. Or have any say over. Guys, protect yourselves! Stay Strong
