Hey Zayn, I'm curious about your questions too, but I will point out that I use skyscanner to find cheap flights and last August I was able to fly to shanghai for $280 (one way). You can find ludicrous deals like this from time to time, months and months in advance!
@eggboy69265 жыл бұрын
Dunno if this helps but if you visit the website of the place hes staying youll see that its actually quite affordable since you can get food and accomodation there; also for westeners cina is generally quite affordable. And if youre on a tight budget you can just stay not as long.
@stonew19275 жыл бұрын
Yea I wondered about this as well. He talks about finishing college and being sort of lost before he sets out to China. Not many people have the luxury of even paying for an airline ticket to China right after college with no income from work or career, much less affording a six or seven month stay, even if it is affordable by Western standards. Whatever income he got from KZbin would only have happened later as he gained subscribers.
@ericaracz5 жыл бұрын
I am super curious as well since I would love to travel more but it can be so expensive. Perhaps he got a cheap flight as people have suggested and his family helped out and is staying in hostels, doing work exchange for lodging or knows people. I have family and friends all over Europe right now so I could technically stay for free in all sorts of places if I could figure it all out but then you add in travel. Would be nice to know how he affords it all.

I have a qestion, what style of taichi do you practice with Master Gu? Thank you very much
@ErraticFaith3 жыл бұрын
Thats actually a complicated answer. Master Gu doesn't really teach Taiji. At least 'not really'. But first to make it clear what is meant by that, its important to say that he 'does' teach a modern contemporary form of what some call Taiji. And thats where the confusion actually lies. If I could take you back in time, to when my research and otherwise began (thats some leap lol) I'd completely understand everyones confusion as well. So if you are all that bothered by the longer answer - read on. Taijiquan in its true form was created by Chen Wangting 陈王庭 progenitor of the Chen family. Of that there is now historically no doubt (They have his development material). It was thought by some (prior to the sports university and beijing really allowing such research) that there was substance to the idea of legendary figure Sanfeng. Similar parallels to the legendary story of the origins of Shaolin in some ways but I wont go into that to keep things shorter. This was all primarily because of the link between Daoist theory and that of basic Daoyin practice (whats now called Qigong). But historical facts quickly dismissed the legends. So back to Chen we go. Wangting definitely drew on some of these old principles but whats now called 'Taiji'; a modern name for his personal art that originally didn't really have a name as such - is entirely his own invention. Using a merger of different combat arts from his military service, theoretical principles he devised in retirement and beyond. He created all of the first forms of what would eventually inspire another man to create what you will be more familiar with today: The very mainstream 'Yang' Style taiji. Yang style was taught, for political reasons, to be soft (he promised not to teach Wangtings former enemies Chen combat). It lacked the hard (external combat) minded application that Wangting taught as a result. This is where a division happens. 'True' combat application of Taiji lies with the Chen. Soft (political and non combat health orientated) with the Yang. With some exceptions. I.e some Yang styles have restored some of the martial elements. Hah. You'll now see why it gets so difficult to explain easily. To wrap up then and answer your question from the above context; Master Gu (via his teacher who started promoting in the 1980s) isn't ironically enough, a large step from the girl here (Wu ming is it?). He teaches what is an attempt by the communist party, to make up for their cultural purge. The one where their early founders killed and persecuted the monks (and many others). This Sanfengpai / modern wudangshan; are a modified 'copy' of the soft style Yang Luchan invented after studying with Chen. With some of the martial tropes that the Yang families, the ones who wanted to recapture some of Chens original teachings, brought along with it. You know this is the case because of the sword form in a way. It was Chen Wangting who specialized in the Jian (in this case straight sword) but you'll notice that all the other weapons forms that Wangting devised from his military career; are missing; unless you look up Zhong Yunlong and realize that he tries to teach them - but they lack all the combat jing (because he refuses to put it to test in that way). Much like how the girl here lacks any real 'Chen' in her Chen forms - its effectively all 'yang'. The records show that Wangting learned from the external masters and generals (yes the same that passed their hard arts onto the Shaolin monks) and that originally Taiji Chen style - was as valid a fighting art as theirs. Not meant for meditative practice at all. Infact wangting believed that martial skill was the highest form of knowing if you'd properly understood Taiji! So the wudang sect (which has nothing to do with the original monks at al) teaches a watered down system of Yang. With elements of Chen's original art that the exiled priests picked up during their time in Hong Kong. After the revolution (towards the 1980s) Gu's master returned to learn from some of those exiles. They taught him this revised history and the communist party came up with the idea of pairing it with Daoist legends - to create an 'internal arts culture'; on the mountain. Using the restored temple complex (much older) to give it that historical appeal and make money (what else!) It is however NOT true Taiji. And we say all of this; only to do the right thing. Which is to honor Commander Wangting. The real inventor of Martial Taijiquan. All of the old frame forms are his. And the 'root' of Taiji, as mystical as it sounds - lies with Chen. Its not fair for people to steal his art. It was, his life's work. As an addendum; sports universities have found that generally speaking (because of course ANY exercise is better than nothing) that the only Taiji art that contains internal benefits in a similar fashion to Qigong - is long term practice of Chen. The 'yang health taiji' isn't all that much more effective than basic aerobics and yoga. Precisely because it has lost all of the internal mechanics and more complex qigong that Wangting originally taught. Is Wudang a good addition to Taiji as a result? Well hopefully you'll now see why so many are conflicted on this.
