Lucy you are such beautiful girl! You’re smart, you’re doing great things as such a young age! You’re an inspiration to many, including myself and believe me, there’s a lot of people out there who are reaching out to classics because of the way you talk and discuss about them. Thank you for this interesting video, I’m a Brontë fan as well.

Great video Lucy! One of the reasons why I love the 2006 Jane Eyre adaptation is that Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens are quite unconventional looking!

This is such an interesting video. I love that Branwell is reappearing in The Pillar Portrait and in Bronte discussions! It's fascinating that we tend to attribute qualities of attractiveness to famous people of the past. I think there is a lot of pressure for modern day celebrities to change their appearances to be more attractive (with plastic surgery, fancy clothes, braces, veneers, etc.) and create this myth that success, fame, and physical beauty are all associated with each other. There's a reason that "Plain Jane" is such a successful and relatable character!

Yes, and ultimately a focus on appearing a certain way isn’t healthy for anyone - it’s a standard that either isn’t realistic or based on a select few. I always see people discuss potential photographs of the Brontës, but I’d much rather concentrate on their work and the actual facts of their lives. It’s far more rewarding!

You really make me want to buy that edition of Jane Eyre, but I already own 3 copies, haha. This cover is so beautiful and matches the story so perfectly!

I loved this. This is such an interesting and unique video. 'we like to believe that their looks had something to with it.' This is a beautiful video and message.

Wow, that’s a very cool job! I’m not an art historian by any means, but the Brontë artwork fascinates me because we tend to focus on their writing, rather than how talented they were when it came to drawing and painting. If you ever get the chance to visit Haworth, you can see their work on display and I could spend all day looking at it. :)

That’s so lovely to hear - I’m glad you enjoyed it! I think there are many ways to be beautiful, and you could be the most beautiful looking person in the world and still have an ugly heart or an ugly mind. Those are the qualities I like to concentrate on and focus on being kind and knowledgeable and creative. Those are the things we can control!

For me, Charlotte is one of the most beautiful SOULS that ever was! Soooo beautiful. Clearly, she is Jane. That she had 3 marriage proposals says a lot!

Absolutely fascinating video! I think it's really interesting to think about beauty because, as you pointed out, what we think of as beautiful is so dependent on the period of time and the culture we live in. Really intelligent and thought-provoking video.

And what’s considered beautiful now most likely wouldn’t have been then, with a few exceptions! It’s so easy to get caught up in the way you look, but I think there’s something comforting in realising that people have been doing the same thing for centuries.

Hello beautiful friend! I have one question. So I have discovered you just few weeks ago, and it's the end of the year, which means you are ending with hosting the Bronte book club for this year 2018?? I really enjoy your videos, I can't even describe how good and charming they are, listening about all this love for classics! Keep up the good work :)) and thank you for filming them!! Greetings from Rome, Italy :)

How u look has something to do with your genes, among other factors. :-) A literary character Lucy in VDT/Lewis wanted to look prettier, like her better looking sis Susan. She nearly enacted the spell that would've made it so. But she didn't, though it was a close call. Would you want to look like 1 of those international supermodels? Would you use the other Lucy's spell to make it so if you could?
@lucythereader
@lucythereader 6 жыл бұрын
The easy answer would be yes, but I do think I have something in common with Emily: I don’t wish to be any different than I am now, because then I wouldn’t be me. And that’s what I love about KZbin: despite nasty comments every now and again, I don’t have to worry about how I look and whether I am attractive enough for TV screens or traditional media, because I control it myself. So no, I don’t think I would use the other Lucy’s spell!

Hi! I have to say that this topic is very interesting. Besides, I'm really happy for all what is happening with Branwell's picture. Regarding the film representation of Jane Eyre, I have to say that Mia Wasikowska didn't meet my expectations, because she was much more beautiful than the character. To sum up briefly, I don't think that we should not judge a book by its cover. Kind regards!

I still haven’t watched the film adaptation in full - it’s on my list of things to do in the next month, though. From the scenes I have seen, however, I have to agree with you: she isn’t the way I see Jane at all. It’s the same with Heathcliff - in adaptations he’s often seen as white and attractive, whereas from Emily’s description of him in the book, he probably wasn’t white at all. It’s interesting to see how our perceptions change based on the film adaptations!
