Thank you, Jon, this story is amazing. Never gave a thought to who came after Consuelo - this is a cautionary tale for sure. 🌹RIP Gladys.

I’d never heard of this lady, so thank you for bringing her to my attention. A bit of a sad life, really. You reap what you sow and all that glitters is not necessarily gold springs to mind.

This is amazing! I don't understand how it doesn't have millions of views. Or at least a hundred thousand. You have channels like Mr Ballen... So many views. I guess I live in a bubble of History. I just kind of thought that videos like this appeared for everybody. Lol. That's how much I like history. ❤ The video just began and I'm so entranced. I want to know more!! How does a duchess end up like that.... Omg. How crazy!!

The pictures show Consuelo Vanderbilt, not Gladys Deacon, it’s very misleading!
@HistoryRoadshow8 ай бұрын
It's only misleading when you don't know what your looking at! All the images of a young Gladys are from an image in 1902.

Interesting take. For the *true* story nothing can beat “Sphinx” by Hugo Vickers who knew her and interviewed her and her family & friends in the decade before Gladys’ (pronounced “Glay-dess “, European style) death well into her 90’s. She was actually incredibly gorgeous, even after the failed cosmetic surgery. Had an IQ of 163, spoke 7 languages, was an accomplished art critic, hung out with the likes of Monet, Rodin, Marcel Proust, Berensen, and other high profile celebs. Hugo Vickers said she was sharp and funny right up to her death. One of the most misunderstood women in history.

I knew she was the 2nd wife of "Sunny". I read Consuello's autobiography. I knew who she was and about her but I didn't really know what her life turned out to be later thank you for all that information

Even mid 20th century inconvenient women could be committed to asylums? This woman had so much to offer and it seemed to me be totally squandered. Such bad choices. How could an intelligent woman with such a close relationship with Randolph and Consuelo have failed to notice the shallowness of Randolph. Rhetorical question obviously. Another interesting tale. Tks

You're mispronouncing her name. She used the version that rhymes with 'ladies'.

This just made me dislike Consuelo even more, you don't want him then why get angry at Gladys. Poor Gladys., what did she expect a British Duke to not be a bore.

What a huge mistake she made, just as silly women do today, all to their downfall! Do not mess with what God hath wrought!
