When I worked for the Disney Store in the late 90's - early 2000's, we did sell official Mattel Disney dolls in the slim line boxes (I still have the original Ariel and Snow White from that time). The problem was, they were the same dolls that could be bought at other toys stores, and they were more expensive at the Disney Store. Disney then switched to making their own dolls for the stores in order to have a higher profit margin as well as carry "exclusive" dolls that couldn't be found anywhere else. But as you show, those first dolls had major issues. Those girls were on the struggle bus. I remember those first few rounds of dolls, and I was embarrassed by them. I thought the same thing you did, who approved these?? It took almost 10 years, but now the Disney Store dolls are some of the best Disney Princess dolls and most accurate dolls out there.

I have the ballerina Disney dolls of Tinkerbell, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Mulan, Pocahontas, Cinderella and Snow White. I was once a ballerina, which is why I bought them, and some of them don't resemble the princesses. Like Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, and Ariel. The only one I'm missing is Belle. From what I can see of Belle, she sort of looks like her. The costumes are nice. I wish Pocahontas's costume was different though.

Some years ago, when I played with dolls, I got an Arielle doll. I don‘t know if it was original from Disney because she was not brand-new, I got her when another person already used/played with it before. At first, I was happy to get her. But then I realised that the hair was very bad quality. The doll and her body herself felt ok and the face looked ok. It had a „singing function“, so when you press on the shell that seh’s wearing with a necklace, then she sings a song from the arielle movie. But this singing was kinda cracked, because it stops in the middle of the song or starts it new or makes weird noises or whatever (but I think this was because she was not new). Her clothes… nah, they weren‘t high quality. When this dress of her got wet, the green sequins on it lost their colour. Also, it got damaged very fast by normal using. But I don’t know if this dress really belonged to her, because she was not new. She also had a sparkling mermaid costume, but the glitter powder fell off very fast. Her plastic+glitter bikini was also not high quality… and my cat ate the bikini later. 😬

I know this was up a year ago but I've to agree. The Disney store dolls with a bulge do look like their wearing masks. I wonder if maybe when they made the dolls the head mold was two pieces because that's what it looks like. Even though there's no seam line, the way it's shape makes me wonder. Also the second Jasmine doll, definitely a cute face, but maybe the face sculpt has potential as a relative of Jasmine maybe. I love the pink outfit which is also a surprise color to see on jasmine but still cute

Back in the 90s & early 2000s, you couldn't compare Disney with Mattel Disney was (& still is) a film company above everything, not a toy maker at all. Mattel on the other hand, masterminded dolls. Disney dolls were there (before D Princesses were combined) serving just as a merchandise for that certain film... same way as key chain, poster, figure or blanket. Thats why they didn't pay much attention to them at the start. PS whenever we had ugly dolls as kids, we always gave them villain roles 😂🤣😂
