I was a cosmetic formulator for 6 years and I used a lot of TKB. Your video is spot on and excellent. A lot of formulators have been told and believe you 100% need fillers with some micas. You don't. It's not a secret, but a lot of us don't. You are right about the matte, although I'd use a different formula. I dye yarn now. I made soap too and with MS lye and shaky hands don't mix. Excellent video and 100% approved, but I'm no genius. :)

@nifertiti83 NO. The ALCOHOL IS NOT THE MAGICAL STUFF! It DRIES THINGS OUT. The pressing binder is the things that makes everything bond together. As I mention in the video, the alcohol is simply there to help spread the binder around, and then it evaporates. It doesn't do ANYTHING except dry out the shadow you may have, and that's why it works well with the sticky binder.

Thanks so much for this! I just wasted a whole bunch of shadows cause I added mostly the binding product to make it liquid and it never ever dried! So tip for people: make sure to add only a couple drops like you show here and use the alcohol to make it wet if you want it to be easier to mix, not the other way around.

@DesiDulce yes you can use refined coconut oil or jojoba oil, but keep in mind they can go rancid more quickly than the other type of mixing medium.
@x0x0BRANDYYBABYYx0x09 жыл бұрын
I use fractionated coconut oil & it has an almost forever shelf life. Will it still go rancid in the shadow? Also, could you explain your step by step process for pressing matte pigments, like the green oxide? I've tried several times & it always comes out hard as a rock w/ no color payoff. Pls & ty!

Absolutely great video. I have a little question. Once I presed a broken Kryolan eyeshadow by powering it and mixing again it with a little bit of alcohol, but when it dried, it cracked. What do you think i could do wrong? Maybe too much alcohol, even though I used only a little?

Did u add a binder like glycerin?
@Fancylooks3 жыл бұрын
@@TayyyBando My comment is 10 years old, I can't even remember, I guess I didn't use glycerin, no, maybe that would keep moisture in the mix and help it not to crack.

Just like clay: when there are too many liquid not enough clay itself that makes it stick it together, when time pass liquid evaporate, it would break. Simple fix: use less alcohol or absorb more through, or press harder.

To be honest, I would always recommend adding even a SMALL amount of another blending mica or powder (you can find some that are practically transparent). If you just bind straight oxides you may end up with a very chalky and sometimes overly pigmented product (i.e can stain skin). I haven't been too successful with binding straight oxides, but you can try! :D

@kimkap85 it reallllllllllly depends. If the shadow has high oxides/pure pigment, it'll take longer than just mica, because it's heavier... you just have to go by eye.

@silverarya there are quite a few options still available at TKB, you just have to look around:) Glycerine would work, but I definitely don't think it's as nice, since it has a sort of greasy/sticky feel. I would definitely add a base if you're only using glycerine (just my opinion though, I know others have done it without)

@@rintea8543 mica is shimmery (shiny) matte is just color no shine or shimmer. If you wanted you can even mix a little mica (shimmery shiny color) to your matte color for just a hint of shine. I personally think it's easiest to make a shimmer (shiny) eyeshadow with mica. I use alcohol, aloe and glycerin for my mixing binder. For an added benifits and creamy feel to the eyeshadow I add 2 to 3 drops of rose oil to the mix of my binder. So all you need is 3 ingredients other than the mica.

This video is AWESOME. Do you think that it would be easier to mix the mica with alcohol and binder in a larger vessel and then use a small silicone spatula to scoop it into the pan? Seems like it would just make the mixing process so much easier. And a silicone spat would get every last bit of the product into the pan. I haven't ever done this before, it just occurred to me while watching. I want to start making my own shadows, just learning now. Comment?

are you making sure you keep tapping the pan? If there's an air pocket/pockets it can cause it to dome. But once it's completely dry it should settle... I'm not quite sure what else could be causing that if you've followed the same as I have shown?
@beautynewbie14 жыл бұрын
@marry209 hard rock= too much binder, or too much unrefined oxides... cracking= too much alcohol possibly.... mattes are very difficult to press, and it really depends on the matte your pressing. it's mostly trial and error... but I will usually put a small amount of alcohol and binder, like 1 dot and then put some minerals in... then spray instead of pour the binder and alcohol in, in short sprays.
@arlenita030311 жыл бұрын
I got around to pressing my mineral shadows using your method. I found that using the TKB binder, it would clump up during the mixing (before the addition of any shadow). So I made sure to only mix it slightly to prevent the clumping. Now that they are dry, they have a lot of fallout. So I proceeded to mix the binder with some alcohol in a spray bottle. Lo and behold, the clump again. Only this time it's a huge clump. What could be wrong?
