I've always done this, I have 4 night routines. Retinol night, chemical exfoliant night, my normal routine which is mostly hydration, vitamin c and using the Faded topicals treatment, and then sheet mask night with propolis serum and cream. I find it good, since you can't use all your actives every day without risking irritation

I sorta feel like I'm skin cycling already. From what i understand, your routine and items change per day. As someone who has sensitive skin prone to acne and has aged and has become dryer over the years, that's several skin issues that I manage. My "default" skin care targets sensitive skin and aging. What's great is how certain skin care items do have gold standard ingredients that target several issues at the same time, alongside other ingredients that help my skin barrier so it tolerates the ingredient easier. When I break out, that's when I change to gently exfoliating with skin barrier moisturizers or a gentler, generic moisturizer

I’m a little confused as to how this is a “new” trend since I thought this is what everyone else with a good skincare routine has been doing already… Like I’ve always have nights where I do exfoliation and one for retinoids and it goes on a cycle 😮
@bierangtamen2 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people have been doing something similar (although I’m personally not a fan of skincare cycling). I know someone who does the “I put on whatever product my face feels like it needs that day” which ends up almost being cyclic and she has lovely skin

@rayliur Жыл бұрын
I completely agree! I feel like I've been doing this for the longest time (bc I don't exfoliate consecutively or use retinol every night). I give my skin breaks by default... It's interesting how certain tiktokers "set the trend" for something we've been doing.

I’ve already worked my way up to tret 0.5 every other night. I won’t be going back to twice a week anytime soon. I agree with Fel that skin cycling is a great way to introduce stronger actives and stop over exfoliating. I like to say I use K Beauty for hydration (toners/essences), moisturizer and sunscreen but give me the stronger American actives in my retinoid and treatment products 😊

I do practice skin cycling - it worked really well for my hormonal acne prone skin but i sortof created my own customized cycle. Especially now that im pregnant and cant use retinols /retinoids, I do one night of exfoliation, one of oxidants (because you cant mix antioxidants and oxidants together they’ll cancel each other out!) such as the tower 28 sos spray and then seal in that with the Ordinary Copper peptides + buffet serum. And then the third night is like probiotics and ferments (such as the lovely Natto serum and the gingseng Beauty of Joseon Toner that Ro and Fel carry in their shop) So like, i guess i do and don’t skin cycle?? I keep to the three day cycle always but it’s not really the skin cycle trend that they talk about in this video so idk if im actually doing it right but it works for me. And when it works it works

Also not all chemical exfoliants are the same. While something with super high percentages could only be used 2x a week. You might want to use a super low percentage everyday.

Definitely a habit most people are familiar with, just putting a name to it. Personally, skin cycling lowkey terrifies me as someone who has never used exfoliants OR vitamin A, but ... this was still informative!
@sarahcarroll82062 жыл бұрын
Skin cycling is over complicated, for me. My routine is the same every day (mostly hydrating products, vit C in the morning and retinoid at night). Every now and then I add an exfoliant or take away an active, based on what my skin seems to need at the time. It makes more sense to me than trying to stick to a particular schedule.
@theintrovertedextrovert2 жыл бұрын
I've never even heard of skin cycling! Thanks for being super informative as always. I have super sensitive skin and it doesn't love AHAs, BHAs and retinols...

I've been skin cycling for a few months now and my skin loves it! I'm very forgetful and most of the time I forget how many times a week I've used an exfoliant or retinol so I tend to over (or under) exfoliate. With skin cycling I just pick whatever exfoliant I like for the week and it works!
@jessicurry20102 жыл бұрын
I kind of have a weekly rotating routine. It's not set in stone outside of a lactic acid serum Sunday nights and a retinol Monday nights. I'll exfoliate again some time around Wednesday with a gentler AHA serum then. Other than that, it's all about hydration. For daytime, I use the glow recipe watermelon tonger almost every single morning, moisturizer, and SPF.

@gioinlove1002 жыл бұрын
This might have been useful to me a few years ago. Skinflouncers like you and Cassandra Bankson or Hyram have already educated us enough to set up our routines. After 2 years of watching I am now on Tret every night, and I exfoliate 2 -3 a week with Peach and Lily Lactic acid serum. I have never glowed more in my life 🤩
@hanna94102 жыл бұрын
Definitely think this makes sense as a way to experiment to figure out what works for you and your skin. I'm working my way up to using tret (Dermatica) every day-I'm at every other night now. I use a soothing essence (Benton fermentation) as a base for tret or by itself on the off nights, and a nourishing moisturizer (obsessed with Purito's unscented) also keeps my skin from feeling dry or angry. I don't do weekly exfoliation because I don't really feel like my skin needs it, but I do use a peel (the infamous Ordinary one) once a month as an at home facial treatment. Almost 40 and still get carded, so my skin must look reasonably healthy
@MsLoriKessler2 жыл бұрын
I do love the Purito unscented moisturizer!
@Christins88182 жыл бұрын
Oh think I will try a cycle as well. Normally I use actives randomly but not consistently. What I always use are barrier friendly products. And my holy grail when my skin is pissed is a Ceramide rich cream (purito new one is one) together with two drops of Grapeseed oil (rich in linoleic acid, which is also very good for acne prone skin). This calms down my skin over night. I also love ginseng, cica, fermented extracts and combucha.
@amaliaahmad2832 жыл бұрын
Never realised i used to do this when I incorporated retinol in my skincare routine. It kind of helped build my tolerance to the retinol at the time, so I'd say if you're really scared of incorporating active ingredients - then go for it. Now that I am planning for TTC, I removed retinol and used bakuchiol instead. But with bakuciol, I dont really follow the skin cycling.
@serenity89102 жыл бұрын
I'm already doing something similar to skin cycling. From Monday to Saturday, I alternate between retinol + AHA serums and BHA toner + serum at night. Sunday is my skin rest day. And in the morning I use a more hydrating/calming serum, but no actives. If I have a vitamin C serum though, it will go in my morning routine but I'm not really consistent with that!
@Fierie3332 жыл бұрын
hmm makes sense! although i’d like to use some active ingredient things bit more often
@KennTC2 жыл бұрын
No skin cycling for me! I agree with Fel you can incorporate hydrating serums in your day to day routine while using actives like exfoliating acids or retinoids. I even use retinoid same day of my exfoliating day. What i just do is instead of putting retinod after moisturizer, I'll add a petrolatum base moisturizer then a lower percentage retinoid than the normal percentage that i use during non exfoliating day and it's working fine with me. 🧡💛🥰😍

I’m 28 almost 29 and not yet found my perfect skincare routine. I think that because I can’t stick to a specific routine, I have been only gone far for not more than a month 😅 Only adapalene is not cutting it for me anymore, been using it for over 3 months now and I feel my skin needs more work, but because of it being sensitive, adding another exfoliant is too scary 😅. I have thought about transitioning to tretinoin, but since I came across cycling method, gonna try it first and see what happens.

I feel like skin cycling is personal. Like I've already done this unintentionally when I use my retinol most nights and then use my BHA products when I get breakouts then pause when my skin is irritated. This isn't relevant to the video whatsoever but I recently bought the CeraVe foaming cleanser for normal to dry skin. Usually I'd buy the non foaming one because i'm aware that foaming cleaners are not usually great for dry and sensitive skin. The regular cleanser wasn't removing my makeup well, causing a few more spots than usual so I switched to the foaming to remove my makeup. My face has been feeling a bit more dry after switching to the foaming cleanser. Do you think this was a sensible choice or should I switch back? ♥

Most people already do this, the term is new but not the concept. Most people just say I alternate my actives a few times a week. I exfoliate twice a week when using a stronger product such as The Ordinary's lactic acid 10%. Then when I'm using the Good Molecules exfoliating toner (which contains 3% of glycolic acid) I can use 5 times a week. Nope I will not be doing this version of skin cycling.

In my opinion, I don't think the effects of retinoids are at it's best when using it that seldom. And aren't we all skin cycling already? Just a different schedule? It's just another skincare trend with a fancy name. I prefer going by how my skin is feeling that day/night.
