Man I always liked leather work. My grandfather used to work at a leather company making all kind of stuff. He worked in Yoakum Texas. Take care stay safe and God bless.

The fat on a beaver tail is really tough. I don't think it is fat, so much as gristle. I shave off what I can with a sharp knife. Instead of salting them, throw them in a 5 gallon bucket with lime water. The lime will loosen the scales in about a week or two. They have to come off. Once you scrape off the shales the tail will be snow white and ready for your tanning chemicals. The finished tail should be brown, sort of soft, and super tough! Yours turned out nice. Your friend has a great shop. I have been doing leatherwork and building saddles for about the same amount of time, but I sure don't have the tools he has. The clicker machine (cookie cutter press) alone would save a huge amount of time!

He is a true artisan at work. He has managed to keep a part of American ingenuity alive. This man is a dying breed. I am really impressed. I would love t5o see other works that he has created. You are blessed to be able to know folks like him who can show you a dying art form. I would appreciate this more than any store-bought item made by factories. Thanks for sharing.

After you flesh it and salt it try using Dixon hide tanning solution, you order it online and it works well. It's all I've used for tanning hides since I was 19 and became interested in trapping

That was so cool watching him make that and all the steps n lil gadgets, not many craftsman of any kind left these days, which is such a loss to our history and how it all started... technically is taking over it all... thx for sharing that with us..

I just started making leather wallets at home! Buddy and I decided to learn it with all this crazy shit happening. Might ask well learn something while staying at home. I am definitely going to be making a couple of these Beaver tail wallets!
@douglaskampfer20288 ай бұрын
After fleshing, you need to place the tail in a wood ash bath and soak. What you want to do is remove the black scale, and tan up just the leather. Once the scalecan be removed then place in the tanning agents, once tanned you will dye the leather black to make the wallets.

They stay pretty stiff using salt. Maybe if you apply a lot of neatsfoot or mink but I'd tan it with some berch bark. Turn it into veg tan.

@michaelbartley95724 жыл бұрын
I been doing it for awhile. You can do everything by hand and don't need all the fancy equipment he's using. In fact hand stitched or saddle stitched lasts much longer. Amazon has beginner's kits. I make holsters,wallets,belts,zippo cases,etc. Watch corter leather videos to learn your basics then move on to tooling. You can buy patterns from corter among tiger places till you learn. It's a blast,creating something only a handful can make.
