Bebop Soloing - The Licks You Need To Check Out

Bebop is a beautiful but difficult musical language to learn.
Sometimes it works better to hear how the phrases sound and try to play them. This way you get a feel for how you should phrase them, and add to your bebop soloing techniques.
This started as a lesson on how arpeggios are used in bebop but then I got really into the licks and liked them so much that I ended up just making a lot of really solid traditional bebop lines.
You should check out the licks but also try to isolate small phrases and make your own licks with them. That is how it really becomes a part of your vocabulary.
Check out the lesson on using a different type of chromaticism, passing notes, enclosures and more:

I thought about it, and I feel that when most people that I talk to think of jazz guitar, they think of bebop. There is something very distinct in the note selection, movement, and range of the licks used, that challenge the ear but still feel well matched to the chord complement. As a novice, bebop sound is what I strive for but often miss entirely.

I hope you do an entire series on this because the bebop language could be a very valuable and powerful addition to any player's vocabulary. Tons of great ideas and creative possibilities to be drawn from this medium.

I've been here before and I've liked these 10 licks. But it seems that the more my comprehension or knowledge of jazz improves, the more I see all the beauty in these licks. They're truly great. It seems to me that you're more of a teacher for intermediary and advanced students than beginners. Thank you so much. I believe I'm making progress.

I see that you did also faster lines, and much variation in rythm Very interesting, beatiful and very musical, and expressed as Charlie Parker on guitar. I almost always play your examples, and sometimes start to study some of them, in more keys...I studied merely your 4th in altered scale and augmented Lydian augmented and also your lick of Pentatonicb8(scofield-pentatonic) you came with a really nice lick bases upon the D F# C F Bb chord and then each tone four notes quite sophisticated...I did study that but still very difficult to really get, it is coming...still using it(piano+ guitar I play about one week much guitar and let's say three weeks much piano I learn each time a lot from my findings in piano and vice versa....

Thanks for this Jens, it really answered some questions about soloing over ii-V-I’s in a bebop style. Can you show how the basic approach will differ over minor ii-V-i’s and how it could differ depending on whether you were leaning in towards harmonic, melodic or natural minor, and what style(s) of jazz it would be appropriate for? I apologize if this is asking too much. Always enjoy your vids. 😎
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it! Most of the time on a minor II V I you will have natural minor on the II, harmonic minor on the V and melodic minor on the I 🙂
@shipsahoy1793
@shipsahoy1793 4 жыл бұрын
Jens Larsen - That actually makes sense to me, I can relate to that, thanks! Yeah, with those different minor scales/modes, it’s all in the different harmonies extrapolated from within the upper tetrachord of the scale. A major 5 (V) chord within a minor 2-5-1 progression would not be harmony from Aeolian (natural minor), LoL. 😎

Have you ever checked out a Japnanese anime called "Cowboy Bebop"? It's basically sci fi adventure show but with inCREDIBLE jazz music for a soundtrack from a Japanese jazz band called Seatbelts. This is the main theme of the show and I genuinely think you would like it but I'm curious if you would consider this exact piece to be "bebop"? kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGPVh6GIrLxjnpo

I didn't know the series, though I have heard the name. It sounds like typical 60's TV music, which is jazz inspired but not really what I would consider bebop :)
