There are much more radioactive things than Polonium-210, which are largely the heavier transuranic elements which eventually get to the point where half-lives of a few seconds or minutes are considered extraordinarily stable due to approaching or having "magic" numbers of protons (114) and approaching the "magic" number of neutrons (184) (closed shells), as these elements would be expected to disappear almost instantaneously without an additional stabilizing effect. Related to things being useful just for being radioactive is californium, with the moderately stable isotope Cf-252 being used as an activator for nuclear fuel rods (half-life ~2.5 years, which makes it practically much more useful than polonium for this purpose). Cf-253 meanwhile is significantly more radioactive than polonium with a half life of 17.81 days and it's primary decay product (~99.69%) has a lifetime of 20.47 days. Much worse to be bitten by a spider with Cf-253 venom than Po-210!

Hey Kyle, have you seen the movie The Wandering Earth ? In the movie the sun is dying out, people all around the world build giant planet thrusters to move Earth out of its orbit and sail Earth to a new star system. How much energy do you actually need for that ? Or is it even possible? Can you do the math ? I love your calculations. I think it is the best part of your videos. Thx for videos

Fun fact: Majority of the time spiders who bite people normally give them a dry bite. Meaning no venom was injected. Reason for this is because of how small their venom sac is and they need to be sure to have enough for any food. However, if you have a baby spider it can inject its whole payload into you. You don't need to worry about that because their fangs are smaller and would just get trapped in your skin.

Correction polonium 210 is used extensively in earth sciences for understanding environmental processes. I work with it daily in my lab for radiometric dating. Since it is constantly produced in the environment polonium 210 is quite ubiquitous in sediments. Additionally, because it is the great great great great great great granddaughter of radon 222 it can even be used in looking at aerosols and movement of air masses. This isotope is actually extremely important in understanding our environment and it is extremely difficult to concentrate it into the lethal doses talked about in the video. I love this show but wanted to show off how cool polonium is and to defend the honor of one of my favorite isotopes.

One of my favorite things about entomology research surrounding carnivorous insects(and arachnids) is that when observing in the field over a long time- such as seeing their breeding and spread over an area in their lifetime is that entomologists DO create radioactive mantises AND- yes, spiders. Not directly and certainly not the sort of radiation you’d normally think of. Rather than irradiating them they instead make other bugs, that they then eat. After the carnivorous insects(and arachnids) consume the smallest amount of radiation they are then able to be tracked down in field using radiation detection. So yes, radioactive spiders ARE a thing. They just aren’t very radioactive at all or in a way that would affect them, let alone us. Found this out by doing research on praying mantises. This is how entomologists figure out how many praying mantis females actually end up eating their mates after reproduction

A couple corrections regarding daddy long-legs. There are actually three different species that are commonly referred to as daddy long-legs: harvestmen, crane flies, and cellar spiders. The first two, as you pointed out, are not actually spiders, but the last one absolutely is. And while it's true that their venom is harmless to humans, cellar spiders do have fangs capable of biting, rare though it may be. This was actually tested on Mythbusters, in which Adam Savage was able to successfully provoke a cellar spider into inflicting a bite, with a very mild reaction. The misconception arises because cellar spiders are known for hunting other spiders, including black widows. People assume that if cellar spiders can kill black widows, then they must be more venomous than them, but this is simply not true; the potency of venom needed to disable spiders and insects is comparatively low.

@@MrElionor Haha yea nobody ever thinks like that. If anything I imagine most people appreciate those little weird exchanges as just something kinda funny to break up the monotony of the same old interactions, and then completely forget about it. The other day I was checking out at Target, had maybe four bags of items and the girl behind the counter, I noticed her name tag said Lyric and I just thought that was kind of a cool name, and just blurred out “That’s a pretty name, Lyric.” And she was like “Thank you.” And then she started talking about what she was gonna do after work and how she didn’t have any plans and I realized oh, she thought I was hitting on her so she’s trying to nudge things along here, drop some hints. Once I got home, I realized I didn’t have one of the bags, she forgot to put it in my cart. I think we were both just so shook by the moment, her by being unexpectedly hit on and me by realizing I had accidentally hit on her, that neither of us realized a bag was left sitting on top of the little carousel thing lol. @@MrElionor I am going through this with 5 hens right now, that seem to be amidst a harem dispute that started in the spring. There are things you might/should consider. This is from the rooster grabbing onto her back when mating. You might also notice a bald patch on the back of her head. You can buy stick-on vests to cover the blank part of feathers. I bought some hens with them. They seemed effective until they got ugly with molting season, all hanging off. Or you can make them. I googled patterns for "chicken saddles" and found a relatively easy looking apron with two arm-pit straps. Cutting up old jeans and sewing on elastic straps would work, but I hemmed my pretty patterned corduroy for $2/vest plus an hour's labour each. IF the roosters continue to mate with the girls and pull their feathers out, which they will, there's a risk of them puncturing the skin. When they do, chickens go a little bananas for blood and they might all peck at the wound. My one girl has quite the wound on her back because she keeps shaking off her vest. I put bluekote and her vest back on, but it's rather nasty. With wounds comes infection. With antibiotics comes eggs I wouldn't eat.. Also, sunburn. A real concern. Hence, vests.

Excellent episode Kyle. One correction. Neutron activation may be the most common way to activate a material but, it isn't the only way. You can do so with protons and electrons as well. Electron activation (or electron capture as it is properly known) would change a proton into a neutron, changing the element into another element and potentially making it radioactive. Proton capture is possible but requires exceedingly high energies. This would also change the element into another one and potentially make it radioactive. Interestingly, the types of radioactive decay are analogous. Beta+ and beta- decay releases an electron or a positron, respectively, and some neutrinos for spin conservation. In the case of beta-, a neutron turns into a proton as a result. For beta+, a proton turns into a neutron. Both change the original element into a new one. All of this is in opposition to neutron decay and neutron capture that only changes the mass of the particle. Just though that the episode needed a little better explaination since you brought it up.

Kyle, You should do a few episodes on how superhero powers would have to work within physics or how to make them work. I.e. kryptonian physiology is probably an effect by their bodies being used to the high level radiation exerted by their red sun and their bodies not "understanding " the change and storing the excess energy because it's not recognized as light because wavelength.
