Is Tarte Makeup Really All Natural? Tarte-GreenwashingIf you’re asking, “Is Tarte makeup really all natural?” the short answer is “No.” I am fed up with people being mislead into thinking that Tarte Cosmetics is an authentically green, natural cosmetics brand. If you’ve been buying Tarte because of your cruelty-free or vegan ideals, prepare to be pissed off. HOW TARTE COSMETICS IS GREENWASHING Tarte Cosmetics beats the drum that their products are formulated without, parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, and gluten, and that they are cruelty-free. All of that is commendable, but Tarte is still blowing smoke. Can we just pause at sodium lauryl sulfate? It’s a foaming agent used in soap, not used in makeup. So why are they even saying it’s not included? CRUELTY-FREE: THE LIE THAT GETS MY BLOOD BOILING If you thought you were buying Tarte as a cruelty-free, no animal by-product brand, then you would be mistaken. Their highly praised “Natural Beauty Cheek Stain” includes carmine! Hello, that’s crushed beetles! WHAT ELSE AREN’T THEY DISCLOSING? Let’s not pass over the ingredient “parfum/fragrance” listed on the cheek stain with no indication of what the source is, so that means it probably contains pthalataes like every other undisclosed fragrance on the market. See the ingredients for yourself: Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, hydrogenated castor oil laurate, Candelilla Cera/Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax/Cire de candelilla, cera carnauba/Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax/Cire de carnauba, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, oryza sativa (rice) bran wax, glyceryl oleate, trihydroxystearin, parfum/fragrance, caprylyl glycol, vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil, tocopheryl acetate, lycium barbarum fruit extract, citral, citronellol, linalool, euterpe oleracea fruit extract, malpighia punicifolia (acerola) fruit extract, punica granatum extract, passiflora incarnata fruit extract, carmine (CI 75470), Iron oxides (CI 77492). More The other shades in the cheek stain category contain propylene glycol, a petrochemical derivative. Gee no mineral oil, but this is OK? Very shady. [Read why propylene glycol is on our toxic list] NOT SO NON-TOXIC AFTERALL Let’s look at their famous “Amazonian clay 12-hour full coverage foundation SPF 15”. It begs for you to believe it’s green! It’s got a nice leaf and a bamboo cap to make you think it practically came straight off a tree.

I feel like the common theme with influencer palettes is that the influencers are the ones getting the backlash for the cosmetic company's short comings and cut corners. When a consumer buys these palettes, they expect a totally unique formulation and coloring chosen by the influencer with the assumption that it is "limited edition". If the company knows the shades chosen by the influencer have been featured in other palettes/products, then they should disclose that as well as that they market the collab as limited edition when they fully intend to bring the shade back down the line. It's complete deception to the consumer and that's why I feel the blame should fall on the cosmetic company and not the influencer. Unless the influencer owns every product from the company and swatches their picks next to each type of previous product, there is no way for them to know that the product is the same unless the company informs the influencer of that. Regardless, the influencer's name is on the product and they typically end up being the ones getting the flack for the company's deception, whether they knew or not.
@dananezat
@dananezat 7 жыл бұрын
it is the influencer's duty to know everything about what they are putting their name on...unless they are outright lied to, then there is no excuse from either party.
@blulucille
@blulucille 7 жыл бұрын
D I agree that they should be as informed as possible about the company they are choosing to work with. That doesn't necessarily guarantee that the company will be upfront about the products or their intentions with what they consider "limited edition". I feel like collabs are always hype because of the influencer's following and the companies make millions off of their name regardless of the product quality. Collabs always seem to fall flat no matter how "informed" the influencer is or how trusting the consumer is of the influencer. Either way it's the influencers who are the ones who get dragged, the consumers who end up disappointed, and the blame never seems to fall back onto the cosmetic companies. The common factor in all these different celeb collaborations is the cosmetic companies, which leads me to believe that they are the ones being misleading regardless of which influencer it is because 99% of those palettes turn out to be a disappointment to the consumers. Why would an influencer approve a product they didn't believe in if it meant their integrity as an artist and name being annihilated? That is the price you pay for choosing to work with these companies whose previous collab palettes are duds and have shown themselves to be untrustworthy. If the quality or coloration of the product is shit, they have every right to turn down the offer. I genuinely feel like the companies formulate a different palette for the celeb to try out and they fall in love with it and approve it and then the companies put out a cheaper formulation to the public to save themselves money. The only winners are the cosmetic companies getting off scot-free for releasing sub-par products that they market as exclusively picked by an influencer which are "limited edition".

blulucille you said it, girl! These big companies end goal is sales, sales, sales, money, money, money. While the influencer has input in the creative process, I sincerely doubt they have access to every little detail. I'm so glad to see others who views this the same way as I do!!

Thank you for being the only other person I've seen with the common sense to think this way! People did this with the Jaclyn Hill eyeshadow palette, and Becca dropped her bc she blamed them for it but i don't blame her! Same with Nikkie and Too Faced! I wish people would get hip to the fact that companies have been giving people that promote them good things and selling regular consumers crappy things. Its nothing these chinese weave and wig companies havent been doing for year. Usually the influencers aren't lying, they just got a better one and dont know.

I'm just tired of collabs here and there. All these companies need to slow down with these makeup releases. Geez. Colourpop releases new stuff every 5 mins. Tarte comes out with not so good stuff in cute packaging every week. Two faced makes the same low quality stuff. Urban decay comes out with shitty stuff with ridiculous prices. Smh. They need to chill with all these stupid recycled releases.

I mix aloe vera gel(korean brand one) and grapeseed oil, because I'm oily, I can't stand putting straight up oil on my face hahah so I have to mix. You can do your own research on oil and essential oil to find what suits your skin the most. But if you are just want a fast ready commercially viable product, look at korean skincare products. Innisfree is an example. Read on the ingredients, American products usually starts with like 7 chemical ingredients, and the natural ones(that actually give all the benefits) are like the bottom 3. Whereas Korean ones, are the opposite.

Those are not their main brands, especially with all the crap they've been pulling lately. Almost all of TF's recent launches tanked, Becca is doing a lot of shady marketing, and Tarte copied a small indie brand (the unicorn blushes) and is making a shitton of money off of it basically stealing a small brand's show also, according to Jackie Aina's latest anti-haul, they're not a big fan of honest reviews. Oh and what did Becca do to HFTT? Do brands have to do something to us personally for us to call them out on shitty behavior?
@ashlabelle
@ashlabelle 7 жыл бұрын
They copied the unicorn brushes idea from an indie brand and stole their hype also they stopped sending Jackie Aina PR after she said she didn't like one of their blushes so it seems like they don't want any honest reviews unless they're positive.

Becca isn't the 1st and will not be the last cosmetics company to pull this shady crap - false limited editions, repurposing shades (with or without renaming them), lying about re-releases... been going on for decades. MAC and Clinique were notorious for this crap in the late 80's/early 90's. I just think it is more noticeable and easier to catch now because of social media and online marketing/buying/selling. But just because it is a common practice, I do not agree with it. It's all so dishonest. And DO NOT let these influencers and celebrities these cosmetics companies colab with fool you - they have A LOT more control over what happens than they let on.

I think Becca is just like their parent company. Estée Lauder does it all the time. Look at MAC Whisper of Gilt and Estée Lauder Heat Wave. They are the same thing. I think there is also a Tom Ford Highlighter virtually the same. Probably is just a little more of something else. Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy lipsticks and Tom Ford are almost the same formula. TooFaced Peach Blush Palette is the same as Estée Lauder's Bronze Goddess palette from 2016. They just added the Peach scent. I have both of those and on the skin they are the same.

Just looked up the ingredients in both, and yeah there are definitely similarities, some of the same fruit extracts are in both, but many of the primary ingredients are different between the formulas. There are some of the same ingredients down the list further that are shared as well. Both products are probably formulated in the same location to cut costs, but the formulas seem different enough that I wouldnt consider them the exact same. Definitely reeks of cost cutting though! I havent used both products, just the Smashbox BB so I can't speak to how the products both apply, the finish, wear, etc.

Lauren Lace I'm thinking they have a contact time- meaning that maybe Jaclyn hill's contract may have been from 2015 to 2016 or for X number of products and then her contract was fulfilled. After that Becca can do what they want with everything in the collection. Just my thought... and I'm no lawyer. I know recording contracts work that way- u have to produced a certain number of albums in a certain amount of time but the company can still own ur the masters of that artist work, u aren't entitled to money once ur contract is fulfilled

This is how I look at it. If you like something, whether or not it's a limited edition, then buy it. If you don't like it, then don't buy it. If you're a collector, then you have to decide. Companies are going to package and resell; and repackage and resell anything that is a hit. Don't get your panties in a twist if it comes out again 6 months later. That's business.It's called making a profit and that is the only reason they are in business - to make a profit - not to pander to the masses, but to pander to their share holders.

Such a shame Becca started out as an amazing Australian brand about 15+ years ago their main selling point back then was that they made foundations in over 20 shades something very few brands did back then which is when I first used their products. I feel really sad they done down this road 😔

I am just so over all these brands overdoing social media. I love makeup but just because a specific guru or celebrity is collabing with a brand doesn't mean I'm gonna buy it. I personally think its corny for these brands to be shitting out collab after collab when its just gonna be boring and similar to other products. Its not just Becca, its Too Faced, Tarte and others.

in my mind (a fantasy world), when a brand collabs with a person, the person picks the shades they want in their collection. i would imagine the shades they pick aren't obscure colors so of course they're going to be similar to other products whether it's that same brands products or a different brand. BUT i do think it is shady to sell a product as limited edition and then start selling it again as permanent once the hype dies down. What about the tarte & graveyard girl palette that was limited edition, sold out, then they brought it back around the holidays and it's STILL AVAILABLE.

I knew about the shade recycling but not from Becca. I had a hunch about with between Colour Pop and Kylie Cosmetics. I think that Colour Pop is the same manufacturer or producer for both their line and Kylie's line which is why so many dupes for Kylie's lip products come from Colour Pop. I feel like THE tweak the shades a little, rename them, repackage then and then resell them for almost double the price

I disagree on your comparisons. I have the JH face palette and watched reviews of the CT one. Amaretto has a red undertone that creates a beautiful sunburnt flush. Malibu Soleil has a more yellow undertone and it's darker. Rose Spritz is VERY pink. It couldnt be used as a highlight. Rose Gold is an actual highlight. Pamplemouse and Hibiscus may be similar but they're pink blushes... its not surprising. something you also failed to bring up is this is a COLLAB. Presumably. Chrissy Teegan requested specific colors. why blame Becca for the similarity but not her? I really just wish you'd be more fair and bring up both sides and let us decide like you used to... instead of it coming across like a witch hunt. I agree Becca has done a few questionable things but at the end of the day they have incredible products and I will continue to buy from them. also.. they're a business. if a LE item is in high demand they would be idiots not to bring back popular products.

But I've seen it on anyone from extremely pale to as dark as can be, It Really does look beautiful on anyone. The "everyday" highlight I use is the Too Faced Candlelight Glow (the light one) because that one is actually light enough for me. I only used the Amethyst one once but damn it was beautiful.

2015 was the peak of my highlighter addiction and I wanted Becca's whole collection but instead of spending $40 for a single one I'd never use up in my lifetime, I realized that all I had to do was buy the Champagne Glow palette and the Afterglow palette and that would give me 6 highlighter shades. Then I got a mini size of Opal as a free gift with purchase from Ulta. The only full size Becca highlighter I own is Champagne Gold which I purchased off Hautelook a year after its first release and that one happened to be the only LE Becca highlighter to stay LE. Every time I'm tempted to get Prosecco Pop, Amethyst, or Beach Nectar I remember that I don't use the other 8 I already own! I've only used them a handful of times and now they're basically just decoration. I'm not giving Becca my money again unless they come out with something that's actually different.

I own both, have used both a ton and honestly I don't see the similar/copycat shades. The blush in the Chrissy Teigen palette is a bit similar to the bright pink shade in the Jaclyn Hill palette. However, with that being said, I can wear the blush in the Chrissy palette but have a hard time wearing the Jaclyn bright pink blush. The highlighters are NOTHING alike. The bronzer in the Chrissy palette is actually a bronzer whereas the bronze-y blush in the Jaclyn palette is a blush and does not realllly work as a bronzer soooo

I think companies, in general, need to be straight-forward with consumers regarding "limited edition" by stating that, which is clearly obvious to consumers - the only thing "limited edition" about the products, when they release, is the packaging, which changes when added to the permanent collection. The funny thing is, if they simply said this, rather than pumping up all the "limited edition" of the shades, themselves, people would still purchase them. Why? Because people like having the special "limited edition," only available this one time, packaging. It's done in every other industry, where items are released as a limited release, simply because they have something unique about their exterior - not the interior. What I don't understand is why the cosmetics industry, as a whole, doesn't have more confidence in their consumers? After all, if they were simply honest from the get-go, stating that this PACKAGING is "limited edition" and will not be available in the future, people would not only clamor to have them, wanting that which will never be available again, but they would, in the end, be happy; not only with having a limited item in their collection, but because they don't walk away feeling decided. I can tell you this...if I like the product, I will purchase "limited edition," special packaging, simply so I have it in my collection. Sadly, because companies don't get this fact, they are forever tainting the "limited edition" wording, making consumers 1) Not rush to purchase the product, as they know it will be around and re-released again and again and, 2) Turning consumers against them because, like everyone in this world, we don't like being played. As far as I am concerned, if a company has confidence in the product they are producing, as well as an effective marketing campaign, the product will sell, labeled "limited edition" or not. At this point, personally, when I see the words "limited edition" marking a product release, not only do I cringe, but I actually get upset; at the company for using an over-used, over-abused term as a marketing tactic. Companies need to stamp being so damn lazy and get back to basics - they've depended on social media too much for their marketing, as it's far less expensive than actually hiring someone to work up a marketing campaign. In doing so, they've had to rely even more so on the specific terms that they use to market the product, as their reach is only that brief moment through social media. This is what I mean by lazy; using a tag term to inspire fanaticism, riling consumers up to believe that this is it, one chance to get it. I'm sick of the whole damn thing! So sick of it, in fact, that when I see the term I tend to walk away, rather than take a closer look. I don't like being played and it's not only Becca Cosmetics that is using this tactic - it's broad-scale, industry-wide from the smallest indie brands to the top 10 powerhouses. They all do it. Every, last one. I say what should be "limited edition" are the very words themselves! In closing, I have to say, regardless of this whole issue, I do love Becca's products and have many of them in my Sephora cart this very minute, waiting until I can purchase them. They are one of the few high-end brands where I would purchase their entire line to use personally and on our channel, if I was able to do so. Aside from this issue, you have to give them credit - they know how to produce beautiful products! Much love, Shelbie 💋 (BeautyDaughtMom)
