Becca has such a unique and powerful stage presence. The most moving concert I have ever attended was a show of hers, held in a tiny apartment in Amsterdam. So giving, so loving toward her audience with her music and delivery...this video is yet another wonderful example

Can someone explain what happens at 3:45 to 4:05 ? It's the only time the chord sequence is changed I think.. is it harmonic substitution?
@sdoowramaj6 жыл бұрын
The song can be broken down simply by reducing the chord progression by taking out the passing tones. | Eb | C- | Ab | Bb :|| If look at it numerically it's this: | I | vi | IV | V :|| What happening at the moments you mentioned could be seen as a chord substitution for the vi chord or the C-. However I see it as using a couple of the many paths from the I chord to the IV chord or Eb to the Ab.
@sdoowramaj6 жыл бұрын
Instead of: | Eb Bb/D C- G | Ab Bb :|| He's playing (simplified): | Eb G7 C- Eb7/Bb | Ab Bb :|| and | C- G7/B Eb7/Bb Eb/G | Ab Bb :||
@robdawson16186 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks Jamar. Yes now you've written it out I can hear the G7 which replaces the Bb as being the dominant of the following chord (Cm).. I guess it's quite a common chord substitution - not 'unfamiliar' sounding at all. It sounds really nice here because the song is, on the whole, quite simple and diatonic.. I love the little detour it takes for these 4 bars

It’s “Amen”, and then I’m pretty sure Jacob sings “Amen” back to be fun (and with intentionally grand and improvised flourish), which is why Becca starts laughing. I’m not religious at all, but if anything inspires a feeling of the divine and warrants an “Amen” it would be these two (particularly together!)

Hello! Could someone please explain to me how this weird choir keyboard thing Jacob's playing on works? Cheers!
@marktyler33818 жыл бұрын
The instrument is one of a kind, co-created with an expert at MIT. It's capable of reproducing 12 vocal tomes.
@marktyler33818 жыл бұрын
I guess it's very processor intensive. Whatever Jacob is singing is input into the instrument, which then has to interpret the pitches he is singing. Then to produce each new tone, the processor has to split the signal into thousands of continuous samples, and pitch shift the steady stream of samples to the note being played. Not just once but up to 12 times. Easy to do in the studio, but live: wow.
@tooomasz8 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Taylor isnt it like polyphonic autotune? :p

Jacob sometimes refers to it as his Harmonizer. I can't confirm but I would guess that it's similar to a plug in called Prismizer. You can hear it on Bon Iver's latest record.

These two are really accomplished musicains,composers and especially, in the case of Jacob Collier, arrangers. I'm just wondering why they don't pick a little stronger material. Minus the lyrics this is four bars surrounded by maybe 20 repeat signs. It starts out being really inspiriational, but after the 15th repeat, it begins to feel like the dripping water torture. With all the great tunes in the world, why pick this?
@filipwikman47498 жыл бұрын
If you listen to the whole concert, you'll hear them say that they haven't played together that much yet. That results in a few blemishes and perhaps also forced them to play less interesting material. Hopefully we'll hear some cool stuff from them in the future, because I think they sound great together.

a year late... but sometimes, its the simplest tunes that tell the deepest stories. Not everything is always about form and structure. Sometimes, its just the feeling that four or five simple chords played over and over can evoke.
