Bit of misinformation there. Before the folks behind ESEE created ESEE, they contracted out to Ontario to make their designs for them. At first, things were going well. Later, there was a falling out between Randall's Adventure Training and Ontario. So, they decided, "Screw it! We'll make our own knives." And thus ESEE was born. Ontario though, still had the rights to keep making the knives, and they did. Why not, the designs are popular. Ontario couldn't make any of the newer ESEE designs, but the guys over at ESEE had to legally put up with the fact that Ontario could still keep cranking out the older models (such as the RAT-7, which is ESEE's model 6). The only change is that on the current production Ontario knives that were designed by the guys who created ESEE, the Randall's triangle logo was changed to a different one. Yes, it's a bit odd. But you're not dealing with Ontario making copies of the ESEE 6 under the name RAT-7. They are both the same knife with quite frankly very minor differences. (I own both.) The ESEE overall is maybe half a notch better than the Ontario. But the Ontario is a bit longer, and even though its black coating is not as thick, it is applied far better. Unlike the ESEE, you don't have large portions of the protective coating literally carved off in order to advertise the logo. What good is a nice, thick, protective black coating if big chunks of it are missing so the buyer is always reminded of who made the knife. I've seen ESEEs that have had significant rust on the blade.... all inside the frickin' logo! THAT, and the slightly longer blade of the RAT-7 is why I prefer the Ontario over the ESEE. It's the same knife. Among the BK-7 and the Ontario RAT-7, both are excellent knives. On both, you have to replace their crappy sheaths with good aftermarket or custom-made ones. You can leave the handle scales on the RAT-7 alone, as they are perfectly functional. If going with the Becker, replacing those moronically slippery smooth grips is an absolute MUST too. Easiest way to do that is just order the Micarta grips that are optional from the factory. Huge improvement! Absolutely worth the extra money. I have a handful of Becker models from Ka-Bar. My BK10 has custom G-10 grips. My other BKs wear the factory optional Micarta grips.

I hear ya. I just know that the RAT team was formed by Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin. Since the collaboration in 2002, things get a little goofy as you pointed out. They made the rat 7 with diffrent steels diffrent price points.. the best way to tell is by checking what handles came with the knife.. The wood handles are bass pro shop exclusives and the steel is 1075 the 100+ dollar rat 7's with micarta handles are 1095 high carbon steel. I have the rat 7 in 1095hc and also the becker bk7 both steels are just about identical as far as edge retention hardness and sharpness altho I have not did extensive testing with each blade so far that is what I have experienced. The main differences are the thickness of each blade becker is thicker heavier and more robust great for chopping wood. the rat 7 is not as thick blade so it's easier to use has more of a elegant blade where as the becker is a tank. Excessively thick and a wedge shaped blade. the rat 7 can easily slice a tomato or do finer tasks and still baton or chop wood. Where as the becker bk7 falls short on doing finer or detail tasks. Another thing to remember is the newer beckers have a skeletonized handle and ive seen them break right where the front screw is.

I think I would take the Ontario for one major reason. The skeletonized handle of the Becker. I have the BK9 but hate the fact that they skeletonized the handle, especially for something that is supposed to be a chopper and I've seen the fracture failures on these handles. So full stock steel goes to the Ontario. However, I don't like choils and wish the Ontario's didn't have them and wish they were saber grind so those two go to the Becker. Depends where really and the kind of weather/surroundings. Steel for steel, the Becker. If you are in an area with mostly soft wood like pines and firs, both steels are equal. Hardwoods need a better steel, so the BK is better there. Also temps. If bone stock, the BK grip is slick. Winter weather it's bad out of the box, too hot and sweaty, still slick. The RAT is better there. So in the woods, not in the winter where you have different trees and shade... Like a normal situation, the Becker.

After using the Rat7 for quite a while I am unimpressed with the steel. Was looking at the steels earlier today after watching this video and there is a difference in the steel. According to the Ontario site the Rat7 is 1095, and the BK7 is 1095 CroVan. There's a big difference in performance in those two steels, the CroVan being a much better steel. Had I known that before I bought the Rat7, I would have bought the BK7 instead. 1095CV is what Cold Steel used to use in their CarbonV blades, and if you have ever owned one you know what I am talking about. 1095 isn't a bad steel, but 1095CV is a LOT better. For reference my Rat7 bent the first week I took it out to the woods. Still usable but the bend is there on the edge. Never had a 1095CV do that. The BK7 will be my next knife and I'll probably just let my boys beat the Rat7 into the ground. Not impressed with the steel.

BK 7 is by far the best knife,on the survival one tool option category. Only Falkniven A1 could come close,if it wasn't that chipy stainless steel they use and if it was at least one inch longer and if it had at least a handle close to beckers design, which it hasn't and so on. Rat 7 is at esee category, same steel same grind and very similar handles.Kabar's steel real name is Sharon 170-06 or SAE alloy 50100B (AISI designation) which is closer to O1 steel properties steel, rather than 1095.That's a marketing trick of course. There is no 1095 cro van steel out there but people, prefer that crapy steel which actually is my least favorite and imho, the most overated steel.,that's why ka-bar puts that fake name. That's the only complain I have from the bk 7,for what you pay,you get the best on the market at a great bargain price. PS Did you sharpen at least 2 or 3 times the edge and put a bit of convexing and polish before use?,.If not,you can get chips with any knife.cheers

While I agree it's better than many, in no way do I feel it's the best. If a knife brand new needs a small change to make it great, it can't be the best. The grip shape is as comfortable as they come, but stock, are very slick. Tape helps or even a full scale change. Also, the coating on the Becker is by far the weakest among the main competitors. As far as the steel, much better that the RAT, but I don't find it better than the Esee. What makes the Esee so great is the heat treat. Not too many can do it as well. And talking knives in the survival class, not many have performed better than the Steel Will blades. I'd put one up against just about anything. This of course takes nothing away from how great the BK is.

@@DonnieBAllDay Who uses coating? BK 7 cannot cut or slice with that coating on,it's there for the knife to get with no rust, until it riches buyers hand, rather than to use it.If you put some use,you will see that that slipery handle is better than any other, because it doesn't hurt your hand,no blisters etc on extended use,it makes the knife balance better and allow to have all the weight, where you need it, on the blade! You can put some rubber band from a bicycle, you don't have to spend any money.but that will make blisters to a softer hand.It has moe advantages than people think We compare what WORKS, better lasts more and can take more.Thats ,my experience and I have hurt a lot of knives at that category. ps esees are the most broken blades on that category, even more than rats,Cold steel follows. You talk about being brainwashed, but I'm left to wonder how many you actually own and use daily. Also, in what capacity do you use them. My knives get used and used a lot. From actual combat over seas to opening letters at home. I speak from long term experience from an onslaught of variety. You make a wise choice with the BK7, but there's no such thing as the one single best. If I made a video saying that one knife is the best in the world, I would be ignorant to do so, as would anyone else. And again, if a knife needs to be customized to be better, it wasn't better in the first place. I do like the name, "Greek Veteran" though. I served in Afghanistan with the Greek Army. Some good basketball players. We had a good time time together.

@@DonnieBAllDay We agree on that! I ve seen action too,,but not in Afganistan.I have been with US soldiers along for two years,at Souda bay on Crete Island of Greece.Even though Europes first sports game is Football (soccer),basketball is our favorite here in Greece,Great basketball level here, and that's one reason Giannis Antetokounbo,is a great overall player,he had good coaches here who saw first his talent! Sorry for being so exited about knives, knives are my passion since a little kid!

@@woofman4796 I like your style. I a totally did a couple reviews that are right up your alley. A crossbow from Dicks that was dirt cheap and accurate at 40 yards and a custom 10-22 I built with Ruger guys. Hammered in a nail with one shot at 50 yards and split an arrow.

Ringo Star yeah bro I get it. Some are really clear some are just that way. I'm a one-man operation so I'm kind of stuck with what I have for weather and video quality. some are really good though.

Ringo Star besides. The more hazy it is the less of my face you have to see and that has to be a plus.

I have both. The Becker is awesome in the woods. I added a choil to the Becker and a set of micarta scales. To stop the sheath rattle, heat the plastic insert and mold it to the knife BTW, my Rat-7 also chipped.
