This was when I really loved to watch tennis. Edberg is my fav of all time, and due to their rivalry, at the time I could not like Becker. But today he is one of my all time favs. I miss their style and the wonderful shot making variety that was possible in the 80s. Great point btw. Wonderful play from both.

Becker had always damaged knees when he played as a child and young boy, therefore his trainer Boris Breskvar taught him how to fall, jump and roll without injury, therefore he never hurt himself as a pro. :)

@whity72 Yes, those German soccer goalies know all about that too -- how to dive. There's a real art to the landing.

@Fernandez218 I said Nadal (who regularly beats him) pretty much masters 2 shots. Tennis in general has become much more one dimensional these days, thanks to the changes. If you watch a 70s or 80s game, you will typically see a greater variety of shots played. Thats why I was surprised you would call Federer the master shot maker (maybe the best player ever - though thats a different discussion altogether- but the best shot maker?).

Maybe it's because they are never ever NEVER at the net (including Federer) except maybe when they shake hands at the end of a match.

@Fernandez218 Yes he is... they fucked tennis to the point when someone can succeed and dominate with his mind-numblingly narrow repertoire (though I still think Borg deserves consideration for King of Clay). Whats amazing is that people seem ok with it... Of course, he did benefit from one of the most uncompetitive eras of all time. Its like Schumacher in F1 in the 90s. But again, I think Federer is amongst the all-time greats of shot-making... just not the ultimate one.

@Fernandez218 That might be because you have not been watching tennis for that long. You can see the one Edberg hit in 85 compared to Federer's right here watch?v=XpdIjm2qOK8 And yes, Federer is a great shot maker, just not the ultimate one. All the greats of the past deserve as much of a mention and all of them came out with incredible shots - and remember the improvement in technology before you make a shot vs shot comparison As for the 2 shot wonder, thats a great way to describe Nadal

@angryniggah , you are not allowed to touch the net at all as you know, so how could Becker reach the ball without running into it? He was tall, heavy, not light on his feet like the genius Edberg? Btw I always had the impression 50% of Edberg´s services were foot faults. I heard this often enough by the line referees in his career. :D

@Fernandez218 Lol @ "the master shot-maker" He lives in an age where someone who masters 2 shots can (and does) kick his ass... Shot-making is what has suffered the most in the last years.

That's not true. Federer isn't a serve and volley player, true, but he comes to net a lot more often than the other guys do these days.

Do what? Dive? The reason they don't dive is because they have good enough footwork to avoid having to do so.
