Just a quick one, aren't you meant to waterproof the plasterboard before adding the adhesive and the tiles? Might be different in the UK but in Aus, you have to. Once the grout cracks/if it cracks, you will get moisture underneath, which can become mould and could then eat the plasterboard and the wood, could leak especially around the bath tub. Would be interesting to know.
@BeckyExcell6 жыл бұрын
It hasn't always been common practise in the UK, but Mark has started doing it now after all the kind advice from this video! We just renovated our tiny bathroom in my latest video, so defo check it out if you enjoyed this ❤️ Hope you had a good Christmas down under in Aus! x
@tommyftw49965 жыл бұрын
It is a common practise in the UK, you don't use standard plasterboard surrounding a bath/shower,
@BeckyExcell4 жыл бұрын
@@tommyftw4996 If it was that common, why were the tiles on plasterboard in the bathroom before we renovated it? Genuinely would like to know an answer!!
@tommyftw49964 жыл бұрын
@@BeckyExcell Standard plasterboard is ideal for most environments, it shouldn't be used in constantly damp conditions. Any moisture that escapes behind the tiling in time will break down the plasterboard and potentially cause the tiles to work loose. You will see that the grout will discolour quickly and damp may show. Green plasterboard is what you're supposed to use as its waterproof and has more strength. Just don't say its common practise whens its not, your old standard plasterboard could have been tanked. You could also use water proof grout instead of water resistant to be safer and make it last longer on standard
@BeckyExcell4 жыл бұрын
@@tommyftw4996 Thanks Tommy, that's good to know! We're definitely not experts or anything so I'm sure it'll be helpful to others who read this too. I only said it wasn't common practise because out of all the bathrooms Mark has renovated and repaired (four bathrooms renovated and loads more just generally repaired) he said none of them have been on anything other than plasterboard. You're welcome to disagree with us though - like I said, it's far from our jobs!!
@freddyvermanen6 жыл бұрын
I redid our bathroom and what really sped up the whole process was hacking out the grouting between tiles. This made it possible for me to rip out entire plates of tiles, sometimes ten or twelve at a time. Nice job on the bathroom!

Hello. Just saw this bathroom renovation and it looks beautiful. How is everything holding up so far? Can you share where you got the flooring and the vanity? Thanks!
@BeckyExcell4 жыл бұрын
Thanks to everyone who pointed out that we should have put in better waterproofed board behind the tiles. Obviously, it wouldn't have been a bad idea and we will in the future thanks to your advice - especially as it costs basically nothing to do so! But to say that the bathroom will basically fall apart in 2 years is a bit over the top, don't you think? The bathroom we ripped out was tiled straight onto just plasterboard and it was there 20 years with no problem as you could see at the start! Just a quick update anyway - it's Feb 2020 and the bathroom has no problems despite what people who like to only try and be negative think 😂
@tommyftw49964 жыл бұрын
No ones being negative people are just trying to give you some advice on better practises. Your bathroom - do whatever you want, but you've posted and video and left comments on so people will comment.... ?
@BeckyExcell4 жыл бұрын
@@tommyftw4996 Of course, advice and criticism is always welcome here and I literally just thanked people for pointing it out ☝🏻 I'm more referencing the negativity of people who like to say 'it will fall apart in a year' because it's not true. Everyone's welcome to comment and to their own opinion, but since so many people pointed out the same thing, I thought I'd acknowledge it. Plus, also give people an update that there's been no problems! I probably sounded defensive, but we put a lot of work into this bathroom and this video and for people to only point out the negatives and say nothing positive, it gets pretty tiresome. That's all!

Plasterboard is cheapish but not the best substrate to have for a bathroom. Always invest in your materials, cement base board is brilliant for intermittent wet areas :) Just a heads up if you plan on doing any work in additional bathrooms or changing the bathroom in the future. Also with any substrate you must apply joint tape! This gave me anxiety watching you put the ready mixed adhesive on without joint tape lol but with that, he did an amazing job!
@jaclynelise29666 жыл бұрын
Jamie Lee we use Greenboard a lot. Not sure if that's just a product in the states but it's water resistant drywall. Works great in damp areas. Then we use cement board in showers and tubs.

Looks lovely but my pet hate for bathrooms is showers that have only a stand under shower head. I can't really see inside because of the screen but it appears that you don't have a hose and hand held shower, do you not find that annoying? Apart from that, it's beautiful.
@AMortificare5 жыл бұрын
I'm not a pro far from it ...but u guys didn't do the tile work properly. You could get mold behind those tiles. And that's gonna fall off or even damage the plasterboard, which you didn't waterproof in the joints. I like the after shots and results tho. really pretty bathroom. A shame you didn't read up on how to make it the 'right way'. Hope you can take the time to learn from your whoopsies.

looks good but this shower wont last more than 5 years without waterproofing. The only way to fix it is to start from the studs and do it over tbh. I strongly recommend schluter kerdi system for a water proofing system. Video was well done though!
@arbit3r6 жыл бұрын
You did a very good job on the tiling. Its not an easy job esp mitering the beading. I think the plasterboard will come back and haunt you however unless you used some kind of epoxy grout. Even moisture resistant plasterboard is not recommended for shower area as water can still get through it and soak the timber framing behind. The slightest crack in the grout or silicon and water will start soaking the plasterboard and your tiles will start falling off one at a time. How do I know? I see it all the time! Could take years and years however so I would just keep an eye on the grout and silicon and you should be fine.
@BeckyExcell6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice! We'll definitely keep an eye on it - we went for aquapanels in our small bathroom after reading all the comments on this video, but totally agree that that's not totally waterproof either! The grout is supposed to be 'water-repellent' so hopefully that'll keep things in good condition for a while x
