Weighing myself everyday, has been so helpful as a maintenance tool. I no longer to lose anymore weight. My goal now is just to maintain my current weight. By weighing myself daily, I know immediately when I am starting to gain weight again. In doing so, I can immediately change my eating habits in a small way to get me on track. By weighing myself daily, if weight gains are found, they are generally not huge. This means it is much easier to lose that bit of weight.

Daily weigh-ins actually work for me as they keep me motivated and focused, even when the result is disappointing. However, I take a break from these whenever I over-indulge, like this past Christmas. I have since returned to my healthier lifestyle of IF and a low carb/(sometimes keto) diet, and will resume my daily weigh-ins as soon as I feel that the few extra pounds are gone. I think I'm there now as my post-holiday feeling of being unwell is totally gone and my clothes fit😊.

I've been weighing in daily with a body composition scale for around 10 years now, both during weight loss and weight gain periods. It helps me understand how my body works and reacts to differing diet and exercise, etc. It's an excellent tool if you can disconnect emotion from data.

I have always been small/petite my entire life. I am 53 and all the weight has gone to my belly and chest. My jeans fit everywhere but my belly. I have avoided the scale for a year because I did not want to know. Even at a doctor appointment a few months ago, I looked away and asked my doctor not to tell me unless she felt it was a concern. I got on the scale yesterday for the first time in over a year. I was so upset that I went to bed at 9pm, woke up at 5am, got on the walking pad to get started on steps for the day. I’m going to take your advice and try again in 6 days!

At a time of very high cortisol levels, I am happy when my scale has shown that my weight has reset below 190, when I have been stuck above that for a year. I am giving myself grace in his stressful life period with my elderly parents.

Hi Becky, I find your videos very helpful. I turn 60 next month and a few months ago I decided to reclaim my health in the coming year. So far I’ve lost 50 lbs. with intermittent fasting, low carbs and just chose to. Cut out sugar, my addiction, after the new year, which helped me get back to my pre-holiday weight. I’ve been noticing my habit of having to weigh myself daily. My goal is to get my health back so I’m going to try your method of weighing myself less. I’d like to lose 50 more lbs, but I’d be happy with 40 more. Since I’ve been losing weight I have a greater lung capacity and have started hiking again, which I love so I’m happy already to be feeling healthier and I’ve been able to taper off some medications with a doctor’s supervision, which has been great! I appreciate your regular health tips. God bless you.

Great video and great idea. I learned a long time ago to avoid the temptation of daily weigh-ins and have adopted a once a week approach. But as you said, the temptation to “reward” myself after a successful week is very real. I will definitely be trying the 6 day approach. It makes a lot of sense. I enjoy your videos and they have helped me greatly. I’m down 45 pounds since Memorial Day of 2023. Greetings from Harrisburg!

Daily weigh-in is my reality check. I can fool myself so easily. What's been better is to graph each day's weigh-in. After several months I can look back and see the normalness of ups and downs and keeps me from freaking out on an "up" day.

Thank you for this video. We are all so different, what works for one won’t for another! I, for myself, have always weighed every day. That has always worked for me, even when I was overweight, now that I’m at my healthiest weight, I find it still works! It really comes down to, find what works best for you, and that takes some of the pressure off you, so you can relax, enjoy life, and accomplish your goals at the same time! Good luck on your journey everyone!

For years I've weighed in daily and felt frustrated if I didn't have a constant downward trajectory. Since November '23, I've been eating quite clean, even through Christmas and didn't weigh myself just ate well. I feel my clothes are loose now and I can tell my efforts are paying off. In the new year I weighed myself everyday and started to feel frustrated again so I've stopped, I've decided to weigh myself every 6 or 7 days, eat, drink and exercise well. The weight will sort itself out. I feel less frustrated and have a more positive attitude. This plan works well for me.

Daily weighing helps me keep my eating in check. Am 77yr old female, struggled with weight for last 40 years, tried all sorts of diets and weight loss clubs to no avail. Weight steadily rose 25kg to now 102kg which is too high for 5’4”. Since new year have cut sugar from my diet and cut carbs to minimum. No cravings thankfully and have reduced 1.5 kg so far but my body shape hasn’t changed much yet, still apple shaped. Really worried about visceral fat on organs, can’t walk well with arthritis but I try short walks. Should I do intermittent fasting? Thank you for your excellent videos.

First Off the picture is my husband not me. I like to weigh every day because it helps me see what meals work for me to know that I can lose weight or maintain. This helps me keep on track with the correct meals as weight loss meals and ultimately on knowing what meals will work in the future for a maintenance weight goal. I also have startedd keeping a daily goal list. Mine is 0 sugar, 0 snacks between meals, brushing my teeth after each meal which helps on trying to avoid snacks, and how many hours I slept the night before which is making me try harder to get back to sleep when I wake up too early. I am 69 years old and we walk when weather permits every morning approximately 3 miles. Pam

This was perfect timing! I haven’t weighed myself in over 3 years! I threw out my scale 3 years ago. 😂 It was a love/hate relationship! I really didn’t miss it. I went by how my clothes fit me. I lost over 50lbs 5-1/2 years ago and I’ve been wearing the same size clothes since then. However, I just received a new scale this past weekend that is supposed to give you a BMI measurement. Idk…. Maybe this one will get tossed too! 😂😂 We shall see!

I like the idea of 6 days (or whatever number) to mix it up. I have found that it matters where I place my scale in my bathroom - I can gain or loss lbs just by moving it to a different place. That is so helpful - NOT!! 🙂 So I find a spot and be consistent with it. I don't weigh in everyday because it drives me nuts! But I do love looking for those NSV (non scale victories) in clothes fitting better, sleeping better, etc. Thanks Dr. Becky for all the ways you help us and inform us and encourage us!

I just started about a month or so ago measuring the circumference of my waste. I have noticed if I don't eat after 7:00 (I will have a bowl of popcorn) my circumference is 39 if I do eat after 7:00 (a bigger meal) my circumference in the morning is 40, so-far that's all I've got. So I understand the switching it up, now I just got to figure out how and what I'm going to do, what's my next plan in other words.

Daily weigh-ins started working for me when I realised there was a lot of noise in the signal-my weight can fluctuate significantly day to day. What I started doing was ignoring the daily reading per se, and using a five day moving average, which discards most of the noise. As long as this number is moving down, and the same for the body fat percentage (again a five day average to remove most of the noise), I'm happy.

Good timing as always Dr. Becky. I gave up on the scale it was frustrating/disappointing etc. I now go by how my clothes feel, how bloated or not bloated with certain foods. Intern I am listening to my body as apose to numbers on the scale for now. I should add that I am fighting against menopause, hypothyroidism, severe anemia ( energy) and severe osteoarthritis in my knees ( for walking...so I swim) therefore I need to work 3 times as hard as I did when I was younger.

What a brilliant idea, I did start in the first week of the new year to cut out sugar and it's working because I'm going gradual with it not expecting immediate results and I'm going to incorporate this idea as well. I could write a book on this subject. I agree with it all, but if I don’t weigh every day I can get off track. It works for me even though it’s probably wrong. It’s even ruined my entire weekend…but it keeps me on track and for the first time in my life I am the same weight after 2 years when allowing for about 5 pounds of muscle which I verified with a dexa scan and tape measure. Yes I’m obsessing, but it’s the only way I can do it. Great video. Thank you.

Hi Dr Becky this is Margo, I have recently hit a weight loss plateau so have been weighing myself daily. Normally since I am a slow loser I don’t weigh every day. I have been trying different strategies to see what might break my weight loss stall so the daily weigh ins give me important feedback. I have been resolute in having NO sugar, increasing fiber and doing intermittent fasting 16:8 schedule. Today the scale is down yay! I will likely move to weigh in every six days because it will shake things up. I ordered your book off Amazon almost immediately but will not see delivery until somewhere between Jan 22-Feb 8th. Interesting advice. I stopped weighing myself as part of my denial that I was gaining weight this last year. With my annual January reset, I decided to weigh every day, plus glucose and ketones. Knowing that I'll get bored with all that tracking, plus the other issues you've mentioned, I've been thinking about after January and what a good interval would be as I do need some kind of accountability. I may just try the every 6 days and see how that goes.

I weigh myself every Friday first thing in the morning and usually don't self-sabotage myself over the weekend if the scale is down by having a sweet treat. Daily weigh-in’s have not worked for me for the same reason you stated. The psychological aspect. I would notice myself looking slimmer in the mirror but my weight was the same or even a bit more than the previous day. I would get discouraged that way so now I weigh myself every 5 or 6 days. Even if I don’t lose any weight one week, I just keep on eating low carb and eventually the scale goes down.

I think there is value in weighing yourself every day for at least one month, just to see how much your body’s weight fluctuates from day to day. Mine can go up or down up to 5 pounds in a day. But while I was dieting, while it would go down and then up, it overall kept going into a downward trend. But this helped me to not get discouraged if I weigh myself and it goes up a few pounds in one day. For example, I weigh myself day 1 and I’m 200 lbs. I diet great all week but at the end, I’m 201 lbs, not realizing that this is the jump up fluctuation day. The next day, it likely could be 196.

During wrestling season in high school I weighed myself several times a day and didn’t know what intermittent fasting or autophagy was. Now at 67 I’ve been weighing daily since 2020 when I started my 6 month journey that got me back to my high school wrestling weight. But with regular gym visits I figure I could weigh a little more. I guess I could focus on how my 32” waist pants fit and weigh less frequently, but somehow it’s comforting to have some measurement. I’ll try this, could be interesting.

Daily weigh-ins work for me. I know they're not that explanatory -- you gain and lose for questionable reasons -- but they keep me on track. One to five lb variants don't dissuade me. More than that? I watch myself. This is good, I think

I do weigh everyday, but sadly I do get discouraged when I've had some wine the night before with my meal ... It spikes the weight the next day :(

The bathroom scale is flawed!😂😂😂. Yes man is so fickle, that we can come up with many excuses.

I am beginning a six day weigh-in schedule. I will post how it is working in a week or so.

Don’t tell me not to weigh myself daily. I have always had a normal BMI and I have always weighed myself daily. I also exercise every day. What if these people develop cancer and start losing weight without trying? Shouldn’t they recognize there is a potential problem earlier than later? Shouldn’t they nip weight gain in its nascent stages rather than ignore it and try to lose weight when the problem is a mountain rather than a molehill? Daily monitoring of weight helps hold people accountable for their actions.

My relationship with the scale has improved drastically. It doesn't have the power to discourage me from reaching my goal. I do daily weigh-ins right now because I was under eating and didn't realize it and I had a fear of increasing my calorie intake. I increased my calories quickly once I became aware I was harming my metabolism and I was concerned about gaining weight from eating more. Those increased calories came from all whole foods and my weight has remained in a very tight range so now I have ease about eating more as I have not gained any meaningful amount of weight. I had plateaued but I soon plan to do a cut to reduce my body fat but I first wanted to heal my metabolism by fueling my body properly and with enough calories.

I weigh in on Tuesdays (old habit from WW) and Fridays to keep myself honest for the weekend ahead. I've lost 20 lbs doing IF and lower carb living but my doctor would like me to lose another 10 lbs. I struggled over the holidays and gained some weight back but am trying to get back on track now. I just might give the 6 day weigh-in a try!
